Rahl lass of '26 Here we are again, The juniors. The cloud of winter has blow11 over, and the bright golden sun of spring smiles upon us. The juniors smile to, for they think of the joyful summer vacation, which is near at hand. They have pllt in a year of hard work in school, and have proved by their unfailing efforts in their studies, that they need a vacation. During the school year the juniors have aided in supplying entertainment for the public. llarch the twentieth, the juniors gave the play, 5'Yimmie Yonsonls Yoh at the High School. It shook the four corners of the county, especially the towns of Bovina and Black Creek, it being given at the latter place llarch 27. The partici- pants showed wonderful talent. VVe owe the success of our play to a certain jolly, pleasant person, the lfnglish teacher, Bliss Kleredith, our coach and advisor. February 20, a dance was given by the Aluniors. This was a success in spite of the dillicult situ- ations which arose. It was at this time that we selected our motto, Hlfvery knock is a boostfl The junior promanade was given Hlay 8. The Orientals orchestra fur- nished music for the occasion. The room was decorated in the Senior class colors, having a rainbow effect in the trimming, these being the class colors. The school year was ended by a jolly good time at VVaverly Beach. One member of our :class thought that the initiation was going to be a false bluff, but exerything came out fine, and the Freshmen enjoyed their welcome into Shioc High. The even- ing was spent in various ways, such as dancing and playing games. Lunch was served and a pleasant time was had by all. Several outings were enjoyed by the members of our class. The menu most generally was roasted weiners and bacon, buns, pickles and coffee. YVe are very fortunate to have as a member of our class a great debator and orator, Raymond Steward. VVe lived through initiation well enough to give the Sophomores a return party. Our class consists of l5 members, among whom we have three great gigglers, Alice Booth, ldella Vanderhoof and Eunice liedor. VVhere Ramona is found, Josephine is sure to be near. Clair Thorp sometimes' ,plays hookey with other mem- bers of the high school. lllildred Braatz and Carlyle Klanley are the demure members of our class. VVe have with us two brothers, Leo and Roy Puls, We would like to know where these boys go every night, because when morning comes they do not have their lessons. VVilliam liable comes from the land of sand. He has been studying in school how that sand got there. Phillip is the Freshmenls taxi driver. lVe also are very lucky to have one sheik among us, Lavern Peebles. Leona Sykes appears among the Freshman class as a merry and fun loving daughter of the rusty country-side. Our class tlapper, Edith Palmer, a tall slender miss, enjoys the privilege of winning all hearts with her sunny smile and friendly manner, VVe had three declaimers, Eunice Bedor, Alice Booth and Ramona Curtis, who will no doubt in the future represent our school in declamatory. Domestic Science If popularity is any mark of success, the -popularity of the Domestic Science room, not only with the girls but with the boys as well, shows the undoubted success of Bliss Beck as head of that department. The Domestic Science room during the first semester was the scene of work at all times of the day, and the delicious odors sent pangs of hunger to students passing through the hallway. Cooking class is one 1'ound of merry life, work and fun-because mixing, rolling and patting are work-and eat- ing is fun. Lessons consist of ninety minutes a day, live times a week, four days a week for cooking or sewing, and one day for recitations. Cooking in the Freshman class con- sists of the preparation of vegetables, cereals, cakes and pastry. The sewing is on the simpler garments. Cooking in the Sophomore class consists of canning, preserving and pickling, candy making, preparation of meats and soup stocks, serving and invalid cookery. In sewing the harder problems of clothing are solved and the harder stitches are taught. During the second semester the pupils learned the art of sewing. Anyone who takes sewing does not doubt that it requires knowledge and skill, for though it may look easy to sew a seam or make fancy stitches that is' far from being true. llliss l3eck's work has been very effective, because those who scarcely knew how to sew a straight seam, now wear clothes which they planned and made themselves. Domestic Science is one of the popular two year courses of the High School work. l ' Page Thirty-fhrm' - - ' THE SHIOC 5 V '1 ff ,QD Lid ff' JGRICULTURE llllyf --:- 1- 1'THE SHIOC V- -, --1--:--H--, -- IFF? . rv, 3 HOF Ag W r r w Q , . f A I Cf 1,51 ' 1 VH- . -J.. The Boys, Athletic Club The outdoor exercises and good sports not only afford great pleasure and help build up the physical body, but are also a great asset mentally, especially when study- ing in school. lt was in sight of this fact that the boys' athletic club was organized in the first week of school. hlr. The following oflicers were elected: Presi- dent, lfdward Lettmang Secretary and Treasurer, Royce Locke. 'i he first activities were in baseball. A new diamond was marked out and prep- arations for a league team began. Supplies were needed before any progress could be inade so the money was donated by each member and th necessary things were obtained. At once two teams were organized, and the drilling was taken up with earnest. lt fstQ1i1til'eVideT1F front the verye than there were Babe Rntlwg jyalterfxlohnsoiis and Ty Cobbs when the eager spectators witnessed the star playing of some of Ute ineinbeii of both nines. The position that the NVashington team now holds was the goal in view when the nine went to Bear Creek to play their high school team. An interesting game it was, but we lost by a close score. The interest did not subside when the first game was lost, but all were in earnest until the end of the season. The home town team was played and we proved to them in an interesting game that we were their masters in the great art of playing ball, Qeven if hir. llanley did pitch for tlieml. A return game was played with Bear Creek, and two games were played with the Nichols-Galesburg city team, each one proved interesting, and the Shioc nine was able to hang up their baseball caps at the end of the season with great pride. Later in the fall' Soccer football proved an interesting game. Sides were chosen among the boys and many hard games were played, and in this we came to the conclus- sion tliat it takes a good athlete in Soccer football as well as it does in baseball, football and other outdoor activities. At the 'present time the boys are hunting up their baseball togs and expect to invade the surrounding towns as' soon as the weather conditions permit.
