Their first meeting was called for the purpose of electing officers. The respective oflicers elected have filled their parts very well and have lived up to our expectations. Un Qctober 19, 1923, the Junior Dance was held at the High School Auditorium. lVlusic was furnished by the Rose Garden Entertainers from New London. Refreshments were served by the girls ofthe Junior Class. Shortly before Christmas the play f'Light House Nanf, a comedy- drama in three acts was well underway. The characters were well chosen and under the direction of Miss Beck the play was given before a large audience and met with ap- proval. The play was as full of pep as it was full of laughter. The date of presentation was March 21. As a class of enthusiasts, the Juniors have surely shown their colors, three of the members ofthe debating teams were Juniors. Alton and Edward helping to uphold the Negative While Mary helped to uphold the Aflirmative. Two of the Junior girls took up Declamatory work, Lucille and Madrian. Nladrian won first place in the school contest. As the Seniors of '25 we predict a class of a great many possibilities. At this writing the decorations for the Prom are well under way. Several meetings were held for this purpose. They are well pleased with the Seniors for giving them such pretty colors to decorate with. A pretty color scheme is being carried out. On that bright autumnal morning, when the sun shown it's brightest, it's light was reliected in the faces of the happy Sophomores, as they thought of the many things the year might bring forth. The days rolled by swiftly. lfverthing worked like a clock, ex- cept here and there where an overworked Freshie would be grumbling over the number of little round zeroes on his report card. Such an unfortunate would always be comforted with the good advice of: Follow the example ofthe Sophomore class of '2-I and zeroes will be so rare that at the end of the year you will ask your teacher to put one on your report card for a souvenir. The Juniors too, were once Sophomores just like we, but they have changed greatly, for they no longer possess the enthusiastic attitude, instead it has grown into a feeling of something or other that we do not like to speak about. The Seniors are a class of High School students, only of a more refined species fthe differentia is mlioreador trousers and monacles for the boys, and latest parisian styles for the girlsj. 'lihe respective members of said Sophomore class are: Oliver Felton, orator and vocalist. Robert Middleton, who has determined on a medical career. Delbert Schwandt, specialist for ailments of an auto. Harold Booth, Shiocton's future druggist. Harold NoachfHe is going to be a farmer when he gets big Ctallj enough. Alma Sasman, comedian fshe can laugh anybody's sorrow away. We've even seen her laugh at the teachersj. Dorothy Curtis, nurse. Elsie SielaH-, stenographer. Lillian Gomm, says she is going to be an old maid, but you never can tell, every 4th year is Leap Yearu. Some Classl Oh Boy! The one who takes the most interest in the Sophomore class is a certain teacher with bobbed hair, and large tortoise shell glasses. She is the class advisor. VVe came wild as the hills and carefree as the wind, but after eight months of battling with English, Algebra, Science and Civics, and trying to succeed with the necessities of life we find ourselves still united but our wild nature is calmed and we are keener in brain and more dignified and proud within ourselves to Find that we have fought our lirst battle and won. VVe have also gone through initiation. Some of us shudder to think of that terrible night, but we all lived through it. Since then there have been many things to entertain us, such as Lyceum, Shows and debate. Our class consists of twenty three members. Anna Kelly is our class comedian whom we could not do without. Madeline and Edna Greenwalt who are always together, they and Myrtle and Edna May are our gigglers. We have in our midst two declamatory contestants and one orator. They are Myrtle Mans- field, Bernadine Qualley and Raymond Steward. VVe can also boast of two trappersfhunters4hookey players, YVarren Tyler and Tom Morse. There are also demure little girls in our class. There is Louise and Alice Voigt, our blood curdling story writer. She can write stories that make Miss Nemacheck shudder and make her teeth chatter. Then there is Gertrude Hallaran our one girl who has not bobbed her hair. Russel Noach is never in time for school. VVe also have a heart smasher in our midt, Edna May Town. Edna Van Horn, Genevera Erwin and Irene Lettman are always seen together, only Edna is absent when Genevera and Irene play hookey. At first the agents would brag up, The strength of this little car, And the way the big cars are set up, They couIdn't run near so far. And after enough of this pesting I thought I would make up my mind And get that Ford a testing And leave the agents behind. And when the paper was written, That the car belonged to rre, The engine wasn't a Hspittenn But buzzed along like a bee. The body and wheels were a glossy black, The tires looked wonderfully good: There was nothing that looked bad in fact, A good engine was under the hood. The cushions were made of leather The best that ever were madeg They were soft, just like a feather, And guaranteed never to fade. Running it, was the first thing For me to learn you know, And when I was ready my ears didn't ring, I was just afraid to go. Then finally I did get started, And down the road I shotg The engine kicked and snorted, And the radiator sure got hot. I was all by myself just then, And didn't know what to do: Then I saw in front of me a hen, But it didn't take long she Hew. You ought to see that Hivver hop When I got near the city, Though I was in fear of seeing a cop, An then myself would pity. And after a time of this toiling I got her under control, I noticed the radiator was boiling, In the tire was a terrible hole. I started to fix the tire, Giving the engine time to cool: Though it was as hot as fire, And I said, Why did I go like a fool, WW 6 115.7 Mi ss M C I , I 4 I ,x!!'x,:V,mII'- f1'fiH ,N- x o 20 :til 1,32 - When I got that tire mended And got it back on the rim: I was sitting in my Ford contented But the gas tank looked mighty slim. Before I reached home that night I ran into the ditchg And then my Ford looked an awful sight. I Iooked worse than an angry witch. And when I got up and Iooked around, I discovered the shape it was in, But then I heard a chucking sound, It was the engine in a heap of tin. I thought I would have to leave it there, Until I had more time. I had to be just fair and square Because the fault was mine. Its name soon changed to I.izzy,', Because she was full of dents, This Ford did sure look dizzy, Since it had gone through the fence. I had it Iixed and after that I was a bit more careful: I did not drive as fast as what I did when I was so fearful. The radiator is broken nearly through And can't be fixed no more: The engine misses, hits on two Instead of hitting on four. We were laughed at by the Sophomores For the pleasures were all theirs, And one day before assembly, Presented us green caps to wear. But they were not contented, For they enjoyed their play. And for our lives after initiation Did each of us solemnly pray. Safe recovering from that torture, To the Sophs shouting defiance, We labored with our English, Algebra, Botany, and Science. When the Seniors of that year, Left old Shioc High Schools' doors We thought we were quite honored When we were made Sophomores. As Sophs we looked upon the Freshies As Sophs at us had gazed, And tlsey dared not call their souls their own Until we had them properly hazed. That year we worked right faithfully, And when good bye we bade, Cnce again we were promoted, Being honorable Juniors made. We struggled with our Geometry Sometimes far into the night But when we'd wake up in the dawn Things had worked themselves out right. To us it was an eventful yearg Our ambitions ran quite high, Looking forward to the Junior Prom , As the fourth of May drew nigh. But the Seniors thought theyid have some fun, They'd see if we would fight, So at once they flew their colors, Their class colors- Black and White. At once we held a meeting, This problem to discuss And we decided then and there, They'd not put it over us. if Us V iglgl zrk o 9 , 11200 'Q' Q 'Q' kgi1i 'lQ Arguments grew hot and heavy: Working fast was every jaw, They said it was a custom never broken, And that we must obey that law. You will decorate in those colors ! Yes, those Seniors dictated thus, We said, All rules may be excepted, just you leave this one to us. On the battle raged and stormed, Until the faculty did we consult, Each of the factions hoping to win, We impatiently awaited the result. At last the decision was given And very much to our delight, For after long hours of thought They made us victorious in the fight. Having conquered the noble Seniors At once we set about And decorated in their colors Tho' as to beauty there was a doubt. Thus our junior year was ended Years fast slipping with their pranks, As the Seniors soon departed We were lifted to their ranks. On The Shiocnfl-ligh School annual, Earnest works begun by some, And when we have it completed We'll know we've something done. Now that we have reached our last step And the days are drawing nigh When we'll have finished English We will meet them with a cheer. Though looking forward to Commencement, Counting often times the days We will not forget our school mates Though our paths lead different ways. ln our little book of mem'ries We will write these things down clearly Although now they are not treasured, We will grow to love them dearly. We will bid farewell to teachers, . Schoolmates all, one last good bye. As we leave our Alma Mater, Our well beloved, Shioc High . Nine students tried out for a place on the team. About twice a week they went to different farms in the community to judge the different classes of livestock. With the use of the score cards which showed each stuclent's ability, the final selection was made. The stock judging was represented by Loyal Vogel, Oscar Romberg, and Alton Puls, with Robert Middleton as alternate. The contest was held at Green Bay, Wisccinsin, February Sth. The opponents were Marinette, Neenah and Algoma. Our team did not win the trip to Madison, but the contestants felt the practice as being Worth while, and say it will always be of value to them. Numerous exhibits were displayed and prizes were awarded. The prizes this year were not given in cash, but instead printed ribbons were ordered and each prize was given a certain ribbon as an acknow- ledgement of a place. ln the clay time such activities as stock-judging, judging of the exhibits and track-meet tool: place. 'lihe track-meet was held for the district schools and was taken up with a great deal of enthusiasm and interest. First, second and third prizes were given for standing broad jump, running broad jump, fifty yard dash, hundred yard dash, etc. Although the attendance during the day was very small, the at- tendance in the evening more than made up for the afternoon's loss. A very interesting speech was delivered by our county agent, after which different numbers were given by the different school organiza- tions. A community fair tends to create more interest. both between the farmers and student body as well. It gives the students a better understanding of management as well as an appreciation of' the ad- vantages ofco-operation are developed. ln our attempts to make the community flair a success a great deal of time has been sacrificed but time which we considered to be well spent. 'lihey were divided into two classes. Freshmen in one, and Sophomores and juniors in the other. ln the first part ofthe year the girls canned vegetables, fruits. pickles: made jellies and marmalades. Later on they cooked the different vegetables and fruits and also learned the different methods of' preparing food for the table. During this course the girls learned the different ways of serving meals and served meals among themselves. The girls took an active part in the school fair and other activities. They had candy sales and with the money they earned and that which was left over from last year they have fitted up a very cozy rest room. ln the first part ofthe last semester the girls did the sewing re- quired of them and after they had finished this they could sew what ever they wanted for themselves. They also took up a course in ad- vanced problems. In with their sewing they studied some of the textiles and had recitations on them. Some of the textiles they studied are flax and cotton. ln this way they obtained a better knowledge of the diffierent fabrics and also which materials were best for making different articles. .. - , V Jag. Their ability is illustrated in the different organiza- tions, such as: the Orchestra, Girls' Glee Club, and Boys' Glee Club. They have made several public appearances and have been en- couraged greatly by their results. Owing to the way this High School is handicapped without sufficient equipment for Athletics, music has been substituted and found to be soul-stimulating instead of vigorating, but nevertheless, we feel we have attended to one of the most important phases of one's career. One of the phases of High School life, second only to Athletics, is Musicg and through this method High School loyalty and spirit may be developed to nearly as high a standard as Athletics, which has been shown by the support given to Debating and Uratory. livery Tuesday and Thursday, general assembly periods were used for general singing, during which time we sang many popular songs as well as the old familiar songs. Much rivalry was shown between the different organizations in their appearances before the assembly every Wednesday. This helped to create interest and proved to be beneficial as well as enter- taining. Ulla 5,1200 Qs- - me Q1 Je' Our Forms of Out Door Exercise Soccer Foot Ball is one ofthe most popular forms of sport in our school, especially during the fall season. A collection was taken up at the first of the season and a very good grade of foot ball was bought. Although we have not formed a foot ball team, we have some very fine material with which we could put the name of 'lOld Shiocn, quite close to the top, provided we had the necessary amount of practicing space and equipment. Our lield is very small and has never been given any attention. Though no equipment has as yet been bought, at- tempts are being made to provide the school with the required equip- ment by the time school opens again next year. Calisthenics was supervised by Mr. Kozelka. who took charge of the boys and Miss Nemacheck and Miss Beck took charge ofthe girls. At the beginning of the school term calisthenics was carried on every Tuesday and Thursday afternoons from three thirty to four o'clock, but toward the latter part ofthe season calisthenics was alternated with other forms of exercise: the boys had calisthenics on Tuesdays and soccer foot ball on Thursday, while the girls changed from calisthenics to volley ball in the same manner. Our baseball team will begin to organize as soon as the Weather per- mits. ln the past years our baseball teams have broken up as soon as school was out but it is hoped that this year the members will co- operate so that in the fall we will have a team to compete against the neighboring communities. -f tt-12 Nw- , V .we , 1' 4 91- . Realizing my danger cold beads of perspiration broke out on my forehead. The Artic air was so cold that the beads froze into balls of ice. I seized one of the balls of ice and rammed it down my gun as a bullet. Aiming at the bearys head I fired, but the heat of the gun melted the ball of ice and it came out as water. For a minute I thought I was gone, but the cold air again froze the water into ice and pierced the bears head above the right eye. However, the heat of the bears head again melted the ice and it didn't hurt the bear at all, but he died of water on the brain. WANTED-A detective-must be acquainted with Saxophone music.
