The wheel still spins, but with this difference: That now choice stands at the center erect: Each man can spin the spokes of his own life. But the unuttered imprecation Has yet to find an echo: Like an unspoken voice it finds its form In something less palpable than words. The plague rages on, carrying carnage Over the land where man is infected already With the cryptic contagion of unknowing. The plague has grov. n more wily than when It scissored a man from the memories behind him Now the dissevered filament swings Flaccid, unknotted, between the fingers Of these children who seem almost disparate. Now the riddle rankles rings, The riddle of the singer sings, And each man until he answers Bears the blight of his own fate. So it was I dreamed I met her on the rock Of consciousness: her wings struck me Back from passing, her lips cockled the decree: Know not only the enigma's answer But the riddle's question- Without both locked in your experience You do not pass here free. Dreams are no more than memories luciferous: And if I dreamed this, my memory was sifted Between sleep until the dark shards were strained out I dreamed I left her, the succussation Of her mane edging the insensate grin. I dreamed I found a rounded dreaming place Where questions glowed mosaically quick And where the quickness caught a multitude of forms There in the splayed shadow was my answer. There were no oracles for me, No doubts poured out on fuming altars. The curse was there, unheard but hearing: Still there were no vapors for my voice: I wandered through my own inflicted wonder Until I found the dreaming place. ,L nga H 'I Q, 4 1 .s H A , r 3, K, we 5. As if a dreamer could descry The target as an artist can And then arrow it, knowing The distance to be just so blue, I aimed my stay on one day's turning Forgetting that the mind may will But never dictate the awakening to freedom. Like torches grasped by night to see itself A processional of voices burned around me. Their masks crackled scarlet, The olive branches of their minds urged me to join, And I stepped into them, into the cold flames To be cleaned. Then we wove golden Through the black brocaded night, Through fluted colonnades, under peaked pediments Where the rebellious stars refused to cast a shadow. And as our silence sang of the conundrum's question I heard the creaking rhythm of the wheel. There were stairs before us Scaling the air to pillars and a room. We climbed them, entered and around An altar sat in darkness: each held His offering, but was afraid to lose the libation Until there was light. We were helpless, between the sorried intervals Of wonder and asking, helpless to fill our cups Again until we knew what they contained. This is the worst: when the hand is weighted By a rounded grip of liquid flaming Whitely invisible. This was the worst Until a voice sceptered the air with sparks And we could see. The embers on the table Echoed effulgently the waving of the wand And each of us came forth, came forth to pour Onto the others, finding which offerings Rose weltering to the oblations' surface gold. This we repeated until each of us found floating In his cup some of the flocculent and Phosphorescent gleaming. I stared in my cold cup: The flakes had burgeoned into serrulated Petals that bit into one another Around the tufted core: They were like the plates of tarnished Armor, reflective and protective of a cockled heart, They wore a dim mirror made of scales. I stared into my cold crustaceous cup, My look a question, my searching a reply And when the shadow started at my staring I knew the question rested in the answer there, In the masked face that stared back up at me. I shuddered to consider how others Had taken years to see what I had seen. But I had poured and mingled my libation With so much art, with so much Demonstration of my innate ability that I had found with one short shivered Glance all I had dreamed for. My sleep I knew was over then: I wanted to awake. Chanting exultation to the silence Of surrounding voices, I exhorted them To share in the completion of my sleep. But their tongues never whispered And I decided by the way, The circumspective way, they turned away And then around, I decided they were envious of me. Still I dream on, but I was certain That my sleep was waking: I seized the cup and looked again. Complacently the image quivered: My belief was made complete. I ambled toward the sceptered voice: My lips began to cachinnate. I stood before him in the gloss of My discovery: the laugh My best asseveration of accomplishment. He smiled equivocations And he dropped his hand, down over the Stigma of the shadow. I saw it split, I saw the hollow mask Maculate the gold. But the complacent shallow shadow Had had the shape of me within it, Even if there were no features to the Face. So I left the room then, knowing The first spoke to be woven, Knowing the first spoke would slow the Circumstantial wheel. When I left the room, There were still blue tentacles of night Brushing back the breathing of the morning. I walked into a hollowed bowl of hillside Silvered in the mist with rustling voices. Then they returned to me, The reconciled voices then returned With myrtled fingers, Promising to help me turn the mask into a face. Down into the hollow of the morning We went soaring, rebuffing winds That billowed on our wings like twisted snakes. We separated into flocks And flew upon each other, Wings wrestling in cold tumult as a contest closed. We leaped over clouds, severing The candescent chasms they created. We hurled ourselves like quoits Into the foam of the expectant sun, Ringing the whipped rays with the strokes of our voices The morning molted into noon, Scattering blue plumes until The ochre feathers quilled out from within, Scraping wings with salves of luster. Plummeting through swirls of unguent sunlight, We listened to the singing Of our reflected faces in the wingbeats, Listened for features to be carved upon the mask. I rested on the ground again. I folded my wings forward toward my face: In the shape of the shadow gold eyes opened To show me standing with surprise That this fluttering should be myself. Then all around me in the echo Of the transubstantial, concave noon There was a tinkling of the other's wings: Each found what I had found. This was the second spoke in knowing I was certain. Now the wheel would be slowed By the eyes of my flying Until it almost stopped. And then the creaking came With an insistent punctuality, The spinning slower now But the sound shrill in adjuration. I knew I could not hurry through my sleep Or I would wake to find my dreams forgotten. But I knew too the singer to be waiting, Her laughter ticking slowly like the wheel. x if w , ' C 'J KT. ,u T '- gE--- f ,T , 'S' ' !!LQS2!V'. ,H W, , 1, :-.4 Y 'YW .4 W N uw H , wwwiE5g57'!,1 , Q5 fab M . 1-,1 g.,u,Q'a. 2 Q. 4.- mf 5 'Bl .,,, wi 1 neu. The voice of the altar, the beat of the wing Could be heard now in the music that we made. In the catechistic chanting of each word The two became combined into one chord. We etched the edges of ourselves With knowledgeable fingers, We spoke the muteness of our past On silver flutes, We exorcised the unknown on the Iyre We broke the rhythm of the wheel with tambourines There, then, on the palpitating pall of my drum The face shone gold without a shadow And the question and the answer Glistened back in all my features. Insubstantial as incense, Piercing as the flame-cry of a bird Is this moment of discovery, This moment in which the altar's Self-adulation closes to a close. It is the last pouring, The final wingbeat, The beginning of the self-spun wheel. mm, iJ5?:gi1.f, , ff-fn ,,,x3igfg:v?:f f-if W - PAW any , M., ,img K ,w ,yin 3 .I-' .. ffQ,,Afsszw '. P It was evening and the end: I felt myself stirring, frenzied, vellicative, As if I had to hurry and leave Before waking. I turned to my voices, Anxious to reflect appreciation In their faces. But when I turned There were no voices for my voice And I stood in the midst of vapors On the edges of the place. And then I saw it as I stood silent: The edges of the dreaming place dissolved, Rounded themselves into the haze Until there was nothing but knowing. This, then, was how it was And a long time ago As I remember. I only know I met the singer On the road again And when she shook her mane And flapped her feathers I questioned and answered her death. Remember then: In the awakened memory The ticking hours are tactile, Frozen in relief. Stand on the self-spoken, riddle-broken wheel Extend your fingers upward In agonistic reach And touch the glowing. In memory The past has phosphorescence in its dreams. ir. , 1 J 2 J Yi , fffi I ,W di. 1 Us ,, ' Q X M f v I 5 I ., ,T 1 af. 1.85 f I x. gm.,-L, ' - FQ ' -Lf? ,, f -zggiai fx. s V.- , , , if L .ff lpg, A .
