FROM THE BEGINNING of the modern era men have recognized two great facets of human life. They have asserted the importance and the worth of each individualg they have seen the need of each person to adapt himself to society. These ideas must be harmonized if man is to enjoy happiness. Our purpose in this 1952 RECORD is to celebrate the whole self and to try to show how growth and adjustment to social demands take place at Shimer. Of primary importance in a college atmosphere is the intellectual self, for it is with this self that the materials and methods of education are first and foremost concerned. This self is best developed in a body which is healthy and able, so consideration must be given to the physical self also. These two aspects of the whole self-the intellectual and the physical, culminate in the social self which is perhaps the most important part of the whole. For the socfal self represents the well-rounded individual who is successfully adapted to his community. And no man can be content until he has achieved this, for no man can live unto himself. This, then, is the aim of the 1952 RECORD-to tell the story of the concur- ring growth of the many sided individual and of his society at Shimer College.
