FROM THE BEGINNING of the modern era men have recognized two
great facets of human life. They have asserted the importance and the worth
of each individualg they have seen the need of each person to adapt himself
to society. These ideas must be harmonized if man is to enjoy happiness.
Our purpose in this 1952 RECORD is to celebrate the whole self and to try to
show how growth and adjustment to social demands take place at Shimer.
Of primary importance in a college atmosphere is the intellectual self, for
it is with this self that the materials and methods of education are first and
foremost concerned. This self is best developed in a body which is healthy
and able, so consideration must be given to the physical self also. These two
aspects of the whole self-the intellectual and the physical, culminate in the
social self which is perhaps the most important part of the whole. For the
socfal self represents the well-rounded individual who is successfully adapted
to his community. And no man can be content until he has achieved this, for
no man can live unto himself.
This, then, is the aim of the 1952 RECORD-to tell the story of the concur-
ring growth of the many sided individual and of his society at Shimer College.

MISS A. BETH HOSTETTER
has long influenced the development
of the individual at Shimer. As
Vice President and Registrar, her
administrative skill helps maintain
an orderly environment. As a
teacher, she has aided the intellec-
tual growth of many persons.
DR. JOHN H. RUSSEL, as Dean
of the College, plays a great part
in shaping the environment of Shi-
mer. His administration of the aca-
demic aspect of the college is an
influential factor in the lives of
the students. As Dean of Students,
his guidance and advice help show
us the way to mature adulthood.
MR. ARTHUR FETTEROLF, Business Manager, counts and accounts for Shimer's

A small town, proud of its traditions, provides the setting for our search for
ourselves. Mount Carroll, the county seat, is the town. Here the careful
observer may learn much about how satisfactory adjustments to group living
are made. Its quiet, orderly life and its leisurely pace suggest that such ad-
justments have been made here.

In the World of mathe-
matics, sets, variables,
quantifiers, logic, all help
the individual to under-
stand yet another phase of
his existence.
Through the pages of
books and with the help
of Miss Baxter, another
world unfolds: a world of
precision and order that
brings some light to bear
upon our off-times bewil-
dering life.

ENGLISH
The total personality is in-
volved when men express
themselves in writing.
Writing skill is fostered
by analyzing the writings
of others and by develop-
ing one's own technique
of self-expression. These
are the means and the aim
of the English course.
LANGUAGE
The attainment of know-
ledge of a foreign language
adds to the storehouse of
the individual's m i n d.
Learning not only some
customs and beliefs of oth-
er countries, but also to
speak and read another
tongue, he develops a gen-
uine appreciation of the
role of language in hu-
man affairs.

To the sound of these cries the Shimer
girls played through the VOLLEYBALL
season. Skills were learned and practiced
in physical education classes, but the
real excitement came during the after
school tournament which resulted in vic-
tory for Marjorie Weist, Gisela Morgen-

RIDING is a favorite activity among many Shimer students. Glengary stables offers
excellent facilities and instruction for those interested in this sport. Students learn about
the equestrian part of physical activity and have fun at the same time.
This year Shimer was honored to have
two of its advanced riders, Mary john-
son and Sally Wanzer, competing in the
International Horse Show in Chicago.
Sally took second place in her class, and
Mary carried away the high honors at
the Town and Country Horse Show pre-
vious to the International.

During the fall quarter the
student body elected a group
of five students to draft a
constitution for a STUDENT
GOVERNMENT. By means
of such a constitution we
hope to fulfill our belief that
society will most effectively
operate on the basis of demo-

representative government. A
fuller understanding of our
rights and responsibilities may
be achieved in this way.

Promoting an awareness of

The ART CLUB'S purpose

This year, the club has un-

Their special project is re-

The RECORD staff devotes itself to the task of reflecting its community. To adequately

Aspiring students in the art of the theatre form the GREEN CURTAIN CLUB. From
their ranks come the actors, student directors, and make-up' artists who produce Shimer's
plays, which give us still another dimension of life.
Being individuals, each of us ha:
some special skill. At Shimer the
honorary dramatics fraternity is

is the criterion for membership.
