O uncle, while you are sailing over the seas, search for a good wave and bring him to me. He must be quite large and strong, yet kind and gentle. This is my wish. Far and wide sailed my uncle, always keeping watch for such a wave. VVhen he finally returned, he was accompanied by my ocean wave, Yousef. Yousefhad originally come from the Red Sea, but when he was still quite young and small, being of a somewhat restless and adventurous nature, he had left his home and had begun the life of a rover, wandering over the vast stretches of water that girdle the earth until he had reached the South Seas, where my uncle had found him. Being curious about the rest of the world and always ready for some new experience, Yousef had readily consented to come home with my uncle. He made himself at home with our family, always serving us faithfully. While he was with us, not a speck of dust dared linger within our walls, for the ever watchful Yousef would sweep over it, washing it away. I used to help him with the dishes, Yousef would wash them, but I had to dry them, because that was one thing he could not do. Father was exceptionally fond of Yousef, he no longer had to water the lawn and gardens while we had the wave. That was Yousef's favorite pastime. He would just lie down and roll gleefully, like a little dog, over the lawn. The flowers were madly in love with my Yousef, for he had such a tender loving touch when he washed their faces and hands. The 1ilies-of-the- valley would shake their bells as he approached, the bashful violets forgot their shyness when he was present, even the bold red roses blushed a deeper shade when Yousef looked at them. The fierce tiger lilies never snarled at him, nor did the dogwood tree bark as he passed, for they knew that he was their friend. Even the quaking aspen and weeping willow forgot their fears and tears whenever Yousefjoked with them and gently laughed. Yousef would frighten me whenever he leaped gaily into the air and fell in a myriad of scattered drops, but by some mysterious power, he always managed to return to his usual form. When he did this, all the birds, big and little, good and bad, would play merrily among the Hying drops. There were always many birds about the house then because the cats feared Yousef's damp wrath too much even to look at our birds. Often Yousef and I would romp over the lawn, playing hide and seek among the trees. Many times we would go swimming together in the lake. At night Yousef slept in a big tub outside my door. His soft lapping lullaby sang me to sleep, in the morning his surf-like pounding roused me from my dreams to a new day. VVhen the day was warm and sunny, Yousef and I used to play merrily during the morning. Often in the afternoon, we would go out onto the sun deck for a sun bath. One day I woke from my nap in the sun and turned to speak to Yousef. He was not there! All that I could see was a small film of salt where he had been lying. The jealous sun had kidnapped Yousef, my playmate and servant was gone, never to return. O Yousef, wherever you are, may you find that which you seek. GEORGENE ENGHOLM. 44 DO INDIVIDUALS COUNT AMONG MILLIONS? There is too much emphasis in the world today on size or mass, and there are few who are not guilty of this over emphasis. Quality and individuality are subordinated to quantity and mass. This can be seen all about us-people's preference for products that everyone is using, their support of large colleges, their grouping of people into classes, races, nationalities, and in the sacrifice the world over of individ- uals for the state. Yet individuality is just as important as it ever was in reality, and the more people realize this, the less labor disputes, depression, and even war we will have. VVar is plainly the result of mass thinking. lt is the grouping together of large masses of people and thinking of them in terms of a race or nation of people who should be exterminated or captured. If each person thought in terms of the individual, he would see clearly the great difference between people in a nation, and he would realize the absolute horror of killing in- dividuals who might later contribute so much to the progress of the world, individuals who were kinder, more brilliant, and worth more than he himself is. Instead, the warriors think of the other side as a group, and every time a shot is fired they count it as a few less Germans or Finns or what have you, and when enough are killed, they call it a victory and celebrate. This is, of course, mass thinking at its worst, and it must be eliminated before war can cease. Yet in spite of all this mass thinking that is current today, the fact remains that individuality is really what counts. No matter how huge an orchestra is playing a composition, the failure of one player to keep in tune can destroy the whole effect of harmony. In the opposite sense, one individual like Edison can give enough to the world to make it a far better place to live in. Yes, indeed, individuals do count among millions-in fact, they are the only things that do count. The sooner we think in terms of individuals, the more compassion and help we can give them, and the more we can improve world conditions. Thinking in terms of small things paves the way for great accomplishments. MAURINE CAMPBELL 45 HOW TO BE FORCEFUL IN LIFE Perry, in his biography of William James, describes the qualities of force- fulness which made James, in his opinion, the one greatest American. His philosophy of life, put into everyday language, can be stated, Be as sure as you can and go ahead, but don't be too sure. It seems to me that forcefulness and making one's life worthwhile depend wholly upon the individual. Every person has different values which seem to him most worth perpetuating- these values are the prime requisite of forcefulness, it being impossible to be forceful over nothing. Certainly every person should have the right to live his life according to these standards or values he has chosen for himself, within the boundaries society has set up. But too often we find this forcefulness being carried to extremes, when one person tries to force the standards he has chosen for himself upon other people. Here the Quakers have found what is probably the best and perhaps the only answer. They have been criticized for their passiveness, which is in reality only the result of their belief that every man is in some measure right, and in any case entitled to his own opinion. Their philosophy does not restrict itself to religion in that it is based on the belief that no one man can write a creed, either political, moral or social, for other people. Perhaps Rudyard Kipling best summed up their quality of tolerance, which they have made a part of their life as no other group has ever done, in his lines: Here's my wisdom for your use, As I learned it when the moose And the reindeer roared where Paris roars tonight- 'There are nine and sixty ways Of constructing tribal lays, And every single one of them is right.' Amos BRO. JUST ONEOF OUR PROBLEMS Is this a modern age, or are we still clinging to Victoria's skirts? The average college student of today has certainly been raised under the Victorian sign of secrecy. We can see that now much is being done to get away from such complete moral modesty and censorship, but the people of our age are just beginning to find out the 'facts of life'. How do we Hnd out these 'facts of 1ife'? CTO use one of our well-worn, Victorian expressionsj. Some few of us have been told completely or in part the 'low-down' from our parents. But the rest of us run from one medium to another trying to grasp bits, put them together, and get something coherent and worth thinking about. One of our chief mediums is the dirty joke. These are told blushingly and heartily enjoyed by most adolescents, and college people. The full sig- nificance of these, together with much earnest discussion of sex is brought forth in the dormitory 'bull-session'. Bits of information gleaned from cheap magazines, medical books, vaude- ville shows, and novels are passed from mouth to mouth, and contribute much to these 'bull-sessions'. In our more serious moments we realize that we have a very unhealthy attitude about sex and the 'facts of life', and most of us would appreciate and welcome frankness on the part of our elders. MARY HALL. 46 THE WOMAN She had sat there all night, not asleep, not awake, but in that state Where all things seem to stop and be suspended in a vacuum. Now the dawn broke slowly shedding a hard gray light over the overworked land. It sapped the color from all things and threw them sharply in relief. It was a merciless light which crept across the floor and picked out the tiny wrinkles in the woman's face, rested on the lines around her mouth and eyes and upon the iron gray hair that fell away from her temples. She awoke and gripped the arms of the chair in her strong veined hands for a moment. Fire kindled in the expressionless gray eyes and then died. She lifted her heavy body from the chair and moved toward the kitchen. The hired hand would be in to get breakfast soon. Men must eat, but what? She sliced the potatoes into the pang there wasn't much lard. The man came in. She didn't look up but went on working. Morning he said. The knife slipped in the w3man's hand and the blood dripped on the potatoes. For a moment she stood looking at them her hands opening and closing convulsively. She walked past the man, out of the house and to the pump. For an instant she almost turned back. He had known, she thoughtg he had known all the time. He should be killed just as something had been killed within her. She poured the cold, clear water letting it run over the cut. She looked at the land, the poor wretched land, the land she had come to when she was only a girl, with the man, the husband, who had left her. She could not even feel bitter about him any more. He was dead and had suffered. But the girl, the blond girl that had been hers, was gone. The woman remembered how she had sworn to herself when she was sick and shaken with hate, that the girl would never know the pain and anguish. And now she was gone. Into her life had poured all the earnings of the farm, so she might learn and know the real value of things. There had been two farm-hands, one shiftless and a dreamer, now he was gone. Suddenly all the pain and weariness within her rose to her lips and broke in a low, deep cry. Only the land and the thin mule heard. The woman wiped her hands on her starched apron. She moved toward the house. The farm. hand would be hungry, and there was work to be done. PAT WELCH. ORCHESTRATION As I looked at the painting called Orcherlmiion I could almost hear the music rise in a great crescendo and fall eddying in separate rivulets of tone. Color and movement were blended in such a manner that it seemed as if overpowering music filled the room. I watched fascinated, as it carried me through a whole symphony of color. I felt as if a great wave had passed over me and left me standing alone on a great plain with the wind blowing through my hair. PAT WELCH. 47 . INTERLUDE It was a long road, and hard. The companions trudging along had known each other only since morning, yet were by now the best of friends. You knoW, said Myar, the younger ofthe two, drawing his dark brows together, you know, Arsha, it seems so strange that you and I should meet thus upon this road, bound for the same place, having lived before in the same village, yet never having seen each other. Tall Arsha tossed his blond head and laughed, smiling at his friend. And yet, continued Myar, frowning thoughtfully, when we reach our destina- tion, you and I shall part forever, and this interlude will be forgotten. We will find other friends and never meet again. I wonder why it must be this way? Arsha looked at his friend and smiled gently. It is the way of Life, he said, But I shall not forget you. They walked on in thoughtful silence until their steps began to lag with the fading of the day and the heavy chill of the night began to settle about them. I see an inn far ahead in the distance, spoke Arsha. Perhaps there we shall find food and warmth, and a lodging for the night. Come, hurry-Why do you tarry there, watching the darkness gather on the horizon ? Are you a fool ? cried Myar suddenly. Look, there among the sullen clouds are strangely colored bars of light, yet they are so twisted with the darkness, I could never tear them apart. I see Life itself there, joy and pain so closely interwoven that they can never be separated. I shall write a wonder- ful poem to the Gods. Perhaps my offering will move them to change the colors in the sky, and thus make Life forever glorious! The colors in the sky have always been, said Arsha. The Gods tint them to amuse themselves. They will not change them for the sake of mortals. Come, the lights of the inn are flickering-We must hurry, lest in dreaming we lose touch with reality. KAY JOHNSON. FUNNY, ISN'T IT? VVar. It's funny, isn't it? Pretty ridiculous to think that since the world's very beginning man hasn,t learned to arbitrate or conciliate. We certainly are civilized, aren't we? It advances the world a lot if millions of men sit in the mire and stench of the war front. The first thing countries do is to take up arms and Fight. And where does that get us? Economically we have a temporary boom, then a depression and unemployment. Nation- ally we become more compact, nationalistic and intolerant. The more nationalistic we become the more apt we are to be drawn into War. And so it goes in a vicious circle. Think what war does socially. People become warped and bitter. They learn fear and hate. They see death. These are all old arguments . . . everybody uses them. Ihave no solution to offer . . . no one has. Communism thinks it has. Socialism thinks it has. Fascism thinks it has, but they don't. Only God has. R1T.A TRACE. 48 WHAT PATH? No one will disagree with the statement: it takes less effort to become a failure than a success. But it is not easy to endure either yourself or those around you when you do fail. I would suggest to anyone who might be toying with that effortless descent to failure that they recall that We build the lad- der by which we rise from the lowly earth to the vaulted skies. There is no doubt that success necessitates work. How many times have you succeeded effortlessly? If you have ever experienced this unique sensation apply to Ripley-fyou are indeed a Believe It or Not case. Especially now-while we're still comparatively young-we must set a good solid foundation for the rest of our lives. We are at the threshold of life, and for that reason it is more important to do the right thing now than ever before. If we make accurate decisions now, the chances are that the remainder of our lives will be better spent. After all, this is no time to quit. Most of us have every thing for which to succeed. We have families and friends who are vitally interested in us-and, even if we didn't-just look at the many who have struggled to the top with no such encouragement. Just stop to think. You can hurry some other time. Isn't it clear that there's only one door through which you want to pass-that one which is labeled Work-Success-Happiness? Laxness and disbelief make life sordid and sterileg work and faith make it rich. FRANCES BONE. ROOM INSPECTION CWifh apologies I0 the new room rulesj No doubt you have all heard about the new room inspection rules. They were designed to turn Shimerettes from the naturally sloppy ways of college girls into nice clean hausfraus . ' To some girls these rules are not a hardship. They are the meticulous souls that arise fifteen minutes early in the coldest weather so that they will have time to clean their room thoroughly. But say you are an ordinary person with an eight o'clock. The night before you say to your roommate Tomorrow I have an eight o'clockg I shall go to bed early . Unfortunately this never happens because the screwballs from across the hall take posses- sion of your room and have a bull session. By the time it has reached the sex stages you give up trying to persuade them that your room isn't Grand Central Station and you wearily join the conversation, but the bull session has already progressed too far for as each small bit of secret information is divulged shrieks of amazement tear the quiet of the dormitory, and soon the faculty member on the floor appears and the little conversation is ended. Now you are definitely too tired to take a shower so you tumble into bed after a cursory brushing of the teeth and putting your hair up on three bobby pins . . . Your roommate opens the window wide and sets the alarm clock. Morning dawns . . . the alarm clock rings. You very sleepily turn over and push the damn little button in the clock and then relax, but just as you are about to sink into a nice comfortable lethargy it occurs to you that at 49 nine o'clock Sledgebottom will be around to inspect. Your first impulse is to hell with it, your second is to arise and shine, and I do mean shine. So you arise and dash for the johnny where you are sure to find two other freezing people trying to get dressed. The difficulties are hard to surmount but you usually manage to get out with all your clothes on. By this time it is ten of eight. You cautiously stick your nose out of the door into your freezing room. You trot out, shut the window and then donning your coat and mittens proceed to make your bed. By the time you have Finished, the bell has rung, so you rush to class only to be greeted by an irate You're late too . Which only goes to show that you aren't the only person that doesn't like inspection rules. But all this is topped off when you arrive at your domicile after several classes only to find a little note addressed to you and your roommate. It is sure to say Trace and Arff, your wastebasket is overHowing . RITA TRACE. AM I JUST ANOTHER BIRD LOVER The March Atlantic contained an article entitled, Bird Lover . I just read it last period although it was supposed to have been read about two weeks ago. It's quite amazing but I still remember the article. It tells about a man who is very fickle and is always changing his ideas about different hobbies. I must tell you about a little incident that happened to me a few days ago. It has nothing to do with hobbies but it's about birds. I am not a bird lover, at least, not now. I was walking out of Metcalf hall, after a pretty boring chapel. It was a lovely day, the sun was shining and the birds were singing. CDon't forget about the birds, I'll be back to them in about one more line.D As I said before, I was coming out of chapel, minding my own business, and enjoying nature when 'plop', something had landed on my cheek. QI said Ild be back to the birds and here I am.j I have often joked about things like that but never realized they happened to human beings. I went up to my room and washed myselfoff but I was still very disgusted with nature. I used to think birds were pretty little things but I've changed my mind. I think I'll appreciate the trees. You don't have to worry about them. Oh, dear, I just remembered-that's where the birds live. I guess I'll stay in the house this summer. BETTY KIVLAN. 50 GONE WITH THE WIND Wlell, another year has passed us by and Gone VVith The Wind . It just doesn't seem like school ought to end so soon or something, I donlt know it kind of leaves you with that vague wish it wouldn't feeling when you think of school closing. There are an awful lot of incidents you can think of when you look back on the school year but one of the first one that sticks out in my mind Cno cracksj is Freshman Day. All the little Freshmen ran around in most peculiar outfits, green caps and sore knees, saying Lowly, lowly Sophomore I am a holy worm oh I beg your pardon Holy, holy Sophomore I am a lowly worm . The aftermath wasn't bad when you consider that everybody was talking to everybody else. Then came Thanksgiving. The banner fight ended in a tie but College won the hockey game against some stiff competition from Academy. Mr. Seitner held the Chapel that morning and then we all adjourned to DINNAH . That night Green Curtain presented their annual Thanks- giving play. This year it was Alice-Sit-By-The-Fire. Alice are you sitting by the fire. Then one just naturally thinks of the Proms. They were all pretty swell but the sophomores' Hawaiian decorations were tops. It was during this Prom that the saying originated A man, bow your head in reverence . The Christmas Pageant was given a little later with all the trimmings. The Glee Club sang and the Speech department staged the show. Gut popped Christmas vacation on us and it seemed to pop right back in before we even got started, and then came those chummy little things . . . exams. The Chapel looked pretty bleak with those long wooden tables. Even remarks like Flunk now and avoid the June rush didn't cheer our quaking souls. The whole Glee Club donned white robes that looked like night gowns with elongated sleeves and gave an Easter Concert, just before we went home for Spring vacation. They may have looked like angels on stage, but are they? May Fete then began to take up everybody's thoughts and time, and spec- ulation as to who the May Queen and Court were ran pretty high before the May Queen's dinner. Anyhow we want to congratulate the two Jeannes. We all think it is swell. Well, the May Fete went oFf with a bang and everyone got a big lump in their throat when they saw the court come down. Jeanne looked just gorgeous as lylay Queen. Then came Commencement weekend, the informal dance, class day and the Library Sing which is always a little sad and lovely and then Commence- ment. Need I say more. This year has seen a lot of changes at Shimer. VVe have a lot of new privileges and a great deal more advantages than we had before. We all want to thank Mr. Bro too for his capable leadership. And to you that are leaving just remember Remember, For you girls belong to Shimer and Shimer belongs to you. R1'rA TRACE. 51 RS USELESS?
