Once Upon A Time ... Young and impressionable, we entered kinder- garten. Thoughts of the thirteen long years ahead made us wonder if we would ever become seniors. As we near the end of our final year, we look back and realize the time we had together was happy. We think of it now as a sad parting of ways, but really “we've only just begun . We learned to laugh at ourselves Hey. what are you doing tonight? Do we have to burn it? 3 Stop. I think something broke!! And to assume responsibility Are we doin this riftht? Alma Mater, fair, Triumph o’er all, We are faithful to thy bidding, When e’er you call. $ DEDICATION As our high school years draw to an end, we think of the many teachers who have guided us on our way. One special teacher comes to mind. This man was never too busy to lend a helping hand, whether it be in advising or coaching. Without his expert supervision, many events at Shikellamy would never have taken place. It is with great pride and many thanks that we. the class of nine- teen hundred and seventy-four dedicate our Profile to Mr. Thomas Farr. 13 ACADEMICS ACADEMICS ACADEMICS ACADEMICS ACADEMICS ACADEMICS ACADEMICS ACADEMICS School Board: Seated: C. In spite of these difficulties, Mr. Cassell, Mr. Lewis, Mr. Horton, and Mr. Fulmer had time to work with and for the students. ABOVE: Mr. Kenneth Cassell. Principal. LOWER LEFT: Mr. Trever Lew- is. Assistant Principal. Guidance Mr. Blyler. new in our guidance de- partment this year, has helped his students tremendously. Our three counselors — Mrs. Fasold, Mr. Boll- inger. and Mr. Blyler — have helped to shape our dreams into realities, and to prepare us for the future. M. Fasold D. Blyler Cafeteria Mrs. Carodisky, retiring head of the cafeteria, and her capable staff have done an excellent joh in preparing the food for the students and also athletic events. 18 Medical Aid Whenever Needed Mrs. Bell, the school nurse, is always there when you need her. She provides the care needed to help lift the spirits of ill students. Office Help Is Very Efficient With the addition of many new stu- dents this year to the high school, the office still maintains its friendly at- mosphere and helpful attitude. Business— “Prepares Many For Careers As Leaders” The Students in the business courses are prepared for vocations in this ever chang- ing world of calculators, electric typewrit- ers. and dictaphones. This is accomplish- ed through the concerned efforts of their teachers. 21 Creative Arts— “New Ways to Do Old Things” The Home Economics Department expanded this year to become the Creative Living Department. The future domestic needs of both boys and girls were met through the new courses. Music and Art students found enrichment in their studies through a better program. 22 Skills Attained in Industrial Arts Are Helpful in Life To know drafting and to be able to assemble parts of buildings can be extremely helpful in facing life. Graphic Arts helps develop a student's initiative in setting type, binding books, and printing various programs and 23 Language Arts— “Many Selective Courses” Shikellamy has one of the best developed Language Arts depart- ments in the state. Because we were able to choose our own classes, studies were more en- joyable and aided future individ- ual needs. L. Zimmerman V. Shaw 24 Social Studies— ■HHH “A World at our Feet This department has benefited from the recently instituted mini-courses. The classes were designed in such a way that students were able to choose those courses which they were most interested in. 25 Mathematics— “A World of Numbers” Our math department increased the number of classes of higher mathematics. It indicated more students were interested in this field since they elected the courses themselves. 26 Foreign Languages— The Way to Build World Brotherhood We, at Shikellamy, are lucky to have one of the best language departments in the area. It includes a language laboratory, thou- sands of feet of tape, and also records which make it easier to learn a foreign language. Our teachers have encouraged us to be- come more familiar with other people of the world by travelling to various countries. L. Kreisher 27 Science— “Variety through Electives” Mr. Evster, Mr. Dunkin, and Mr. Friday are a fine addition to our Sci- ence department. With many new mini-nine week courses, students can determine if they want to study about insects, survival, or ecology. The de- partment also uses field trips as a way to teach and to make things more in- teresting for the student. N. Dunkin |. Tamecki R Johnson S. Ocker 28 T. Friday Special Education— “Attention for the Individual” Smaller classes made possible more individual attention to the students’ needs. This increased their awareness of different as- pects of life. S. Farr 29 Physical Education— “Builds Stronger Bodies” In striving to help us develop our bodies as well as our intellects, the gym instruct- ors managed to cope with increasingly full classes. By their interested encour- agement many of us benefited from sports activities. T. Balestrini B. Black E. Dcibler C. Fojjel Co-Operatives — “Behind the Students All the Way” In the high school we are fortunate enough to have a group of special area teachers who believe in the students. They have been a necessity during this long educational year. We've been helped by these people in important areas of our personal life as well as during our school days. They’ve come to our assistance in the library, during study halls, and in the audio-visual aids department. Thanks to their help our following days should be well rounded. 31 ACTIVITIES ACTIVITIES ACTIVITIES ACTIVITIES ACTIVITIES Marching Braves— “The Sounds of Music” Under the direction of Mr. Dennis Schnader. this year's Marching Braves spent long and tiring hours putting to- gether another crowd pleasing show. All that will be left of our school years are mem- ories. Memories of football games, dances, classes, friends, basketball games, and wrestling matches will remind us of the good times we have had. In future years when we reflect backward, we will pleas- antly remember the good times we shared and will have forgotten any unhappy mo- ments. Executive Board: ABOVE Seated: |. Barrett. G Witmer. As we stand on the threshold of our future, we realize that it depends greatly upon the compilation of our past experience. Considering that our educational background was the major factor in our evolvement; let us in retrospect begin with sixth grade where we first merged as the class of 1974. Here our class, along with the class of 1973, was successful in pioneering the inception of the Middle School system. Our first class officers were: Pres. Donna Morgan. Vice Pres, joe Barrett. Sec. Carol Slack, and Treas. Robin Weir. Although we were disgruntled over the fact that we had to forfeit the sixth grade trip and the chance to patrol that so many classes before us had enjoyed, this opportunity to vote for student council and class officers compensated in part. President Carol Slack led our seventh grade class with Maureen Hanan as Vice Pres., Randy Weidman as Sec., and Jeanne Arnold as Treas. Jeanne's job was to collect the nom- inal sum of $.25 as compared to the inflationary assessment of $3.00 of our present Senior High dues. Highlighting our Middle School years were those unforgettable sixth and seventh grade socials with entertainment consisting of ping-pong, record hopping, and square dancing. Advancing to eighth grade brought an alteration in our class officers once again. The officers were as follows: Pres. Gale Wolf, Vice Pres. Carol Slack, Sec. Vickie Kerstetter, and Treas. Bessie Stuck. As we launched into ninth grade, we were faced with the weighty decision of choosing the class colors of maroon and gold and the carnation as our class flower. After a vigorous magazine campaign, we were able to contribute $200.00 to the Video Tape equipment as our class gift, thus verifying our motto: “Give us responsibility and we will accept it. Our capable class officers consisted of Pres. Louvonne Brown, Vice Pres. Carol Slack, Sec. Melinda Rice, Treas. Bill Hays, and Hist. Vicky Haines. o The anticipation of arriving at the Senior High was accompanied by the apprehension of upper classmen steering us in the wrong direction, causing us to be late for classes. Ably assisting our class officers in getting oriented was our advisor Mr. Falso. He aided Pres. Diane Knoebel, Vice Pres. Robin Weir. Sec. Melinda Rice, 'Ireas. Jeanne Arnold, and Hist. Lonna Trout in arranging for the concession stands at basketball games and wrestling matches. Other money making projects were selling candy and holding dances. Eleventh grade found us preparing for the big event of the Junior-Senior prom by a suc- cessful fashion show featuring prom gowns and tuxedos through the courtesy of Modern Bridal and Kleinbauer’s. The Studio Flower Shop added a touch of beauty by donating corsages and carnations for the models. Endless hours of designing and assembling came to a climax May eleventh as students were transported to dancing in the world of Undersea Fantasy amidst sunken treasures and sea life. Chairman and Co-Chairman of this event were Carl Renninger and Diane Knoebel. Slate of officers were Pres. Bob Troutman. Vice Pres. Joe Barrett, Sec. Janelle Gallo. Treas. Jeanne Arnold, and Hist. Lonna Trout. We were pleased that Mr. Johnson, who gained our admiration and respect as our Junior class advisor was again willing to guide us in our final year. Working with him were: Pres. Jeanne Arnold, Vice Pres. Carol Slack, Sec. Janelle Gallo. Treas. Kay Ritchie, and Hist. Lonna Trout. The Royal Class of 74” worked well in putting together the spectacular homecoming castle float on which Queen Vicki Schreffler and her escort, Carl Renninger. rode, along with contending seniors Cindy Arter and her escort, Steve Arbogast, and Judy Derk, es- corted by Bill Young. In the spirit of levity, we held the hilarious and unique Donkey Basketball game in which the Senior class team narrowly beat the Faculty team by a score of Ifi to 14. Considering the initiative and the achievements accomplished over these past six years: accompanied with the drive and ambitions of our class as a whole; it is my earnest opin- ion that we as a group will contribute much to the society of the future. The life of a soul on earth lasts beyond her departure. You will always feel that life touching yours. She lives on in your life and in the lives of all others that knew her. Barbara Mae Brosius During our senior year, sorrow touched the hearts of many with the death of Barbara Brosius. For those of us who knew her. Barb always had a friendly smile. Now we can remember her as she would have wished us to. We will miss her greatly but her memory will live on with us forever. 161 PROFILE 1974 I he 1979-74 year began as it always did and always will for the seniors. The precious moments of our final year in school flew by at a breathless rate. Even more hectic was the schedule of the yearbook staff. Taking pictures, doing layouts, writing copy, cropping pictures, and meeting deadlines kept us on our toes. Each department of the staff did their best to make our yearbook some- thing for us all to reflect on with pleasure. As we near the end, I would like to thank Mr. Charles Lewis, for finding time to answer all the questions that we had and point- ing us in the right direction, and Mr. Edward Schindler and Mr. Walter Schindler, for making themselves available when we needed them, even at a moment’s notice. My very special thanks go to Shelly Knarr for helping me get started and for being there when I needed support. Thanks to all the editors and staff members who helped so much throughout the year. 1 hope everyone who reads this yearbook will think of the people who made it possible and all the moments to remember. Thank you once again.
