A YEAR OF BEGINNINGS For every Shikellamy Senior High School student each year is filled with new and varied beginnings — exciting methods of achievement . . . modern ideals and principles. . . and the keys to a vast horizon called the future. To some the way is difficult, to others it seems rather simple; but to all it is paved with the cherished memories of the isolated moments initiat- ing each beginning. The 1971 Profile staff has tried to capture those moments, and through picture and essay vividly portrayed this year of beginnings. A New Year of Beginnings Lay Before Us. Dedication Each year someone special is recognized by the gradu- ating class for possessing those qualities most admired by the student body. We have selected one who has been noted as a leader not only in our school but throughout the entire community. His integrity, sincerity, and sense of humor make him an example for all to follow. As a teacher he challenged us ... as an advisor he guided us . . . and as a friend he encouraged us. Through this we see that he has contributed something to Shikel- lamy High School far beyond academic excellence. Because he has so willingly dedicated himself to us, we are proud and honored to dedicate to Mr. Charles Lewis the Profile of 1971. 13 14 Administration This year has truly been a year of beginnings for our administration and faculty. 1971 marked the appoint- ment of a new principal, Mr. James Doty, and a new vice-principal, Mr. Trevor Lewis. With these dedicated and capable men came new ideas and philosophies con- cerning the expanding population of Shikellamy High School. The sincerity of these men, the school board, and the faculty has molded the high academic standing of S.H.S. 16 17 Guidance Department Prepares Students For The Future From the beginning of our high school years the guidance counselors were there when we needed them. Schedule changes, help with indi- vidual problems, college admissions, college in- terviews, job interviews — the student body could not have managed without the competent assistance of Mrs. Fasold, Mr. Bollinger, and Mrs. Matson. Language Arts Takes On New Face 1971 was truly a year of beginnings for the Language Arts Depart- ment. In their constant effort to design new and advanced avenues of study, the English faculty members created varied, nine-week mini- courses. These courses, available to many of the seniors, included, radio and television, creative writing workshop, fun and games, and poetry of folk and rock. This program was so successful that next year the entire Language Arts Department curriculum will be comprised of mini-courses. ■-3tH Language Presents A Mirror Of The World L Krcishcr j S. Lunger Many new techniques were employed in the study and mastery of foreign languages this year. The language laboratory was used exten- sively as the students practiced with records and tapes. Involvement in the language was a major facet of study included in the course . Crowning the year’s language activities were trips to Spain and Ger- many taken by many of Shikellamy’s exuberant linguists. 26 Industrial Arts Develops Student Skills In order to prepare students for the vocational world, the Industrial Arts Department stressed personal experience and service. Through me- chanical drawing and graphic arts courses stu- dents gained knowledge of drafting, printing, and binding. Proof of their skill could be seen throughout the school in the form of programs, tickets, and posters. C. Dauberman R. Purnell B Hill The Exact Science Of Mathematics This year the Mathematics Depart- ment emphasized progressive courses and pre-college preparation. In their ever-constant effort to encourage ad- vanced studies and improve Shikel- lamy’s high academic standards, the faculty members stressed new features such as computer programming. Throughout the well-rounded se- quence of courses, the students gained a fine knowledge of figures. 77 Science Aids Students In Understanding An Ever-Changing World Knowledge through experience was a keynote in this year’s science curriculum. General and earth science courses provided an interesting background in the subject. Chemistry night labs were held in order to give students a chance for individual involvement. Biology classes spent more time attending sessions at the hospital and observing experiments. J. Tamcclci R. Young 28 Social Studies Probes Past, Present, and Future In an effort to study the historical past as well as the vi- brant present, this year’s Social Studies Department in- creased the desire to learn for many students. New teachers with varied methods brought interest and enjoyment to their classrooms as they prepared students for the problems of the future by stressing the solutions of the past. C. Schlegcl H. Klepko C. Lewis W. Sabo 29 K. Smith Gym Program Shapes Student Bodies With the current emphasis on physical fit- ness the physical education department once again endeavored to shape student bodies. From field hockey, to softball, to basketball, to tumbling, to calisthenics, to incredibly sore muscles, Mrs. Heckert and Mr. Hort tried their best to make us prime examples of phys- ical fitness. 30 Special Education Provides Basic Needs This curriculum is a program arranged to provide the basic fundamental needs of those pupils whose individual differences require an adaped course of study. Due to the small class sizes, more individual attention can be given. The purpose of this specialized curricu- lum is to help these pupils to become adjust- ed vocationally, economically, socially, and emotionally so that they can take their right- ful place in society. 31 D. Coleman M. Milne 2 E. Deibler B. Hoffman J. Phillips R. Sabol Co-Operatives Round Out School Agenda This year the co-operatives contributed their talents above and beyond the call of duty to make Shikellamy a finer school. Students were given more opportunity to express their ideas through the media cen- ter’s advanced equipment. Study was made easier through the librarian’s courteous and considerate aid. By increasing the number of driver education classes, more students were given the opportunity to learn pa- tience and consideration for others as well as facts and figures. 33 Marching Braves: Musical Menagerie The 1970 Shikellamy High School Marching Braves have won many honors and trophies this season. The members in- vested many hours of practice in becoming the champions they are. This year they tackled such problems as open lunch for seniors, the never-ending battle of the dress code, and the permitted hair length for boys. Their major triumph was the revi- sion of the dress code allowing girls to wear slacks to school and school activities. Al- though there have been difficulties involved in many of their proposed ideas, the council has continued to push forward. ABOVE: Officers: B. Hoffman, president; A. Rosini, vice-president; K. Offense — Purnell Style 1970 was another championship year for the Shikellamy Braves as they captured the Susquehanna Valley Class A Championship for the sixth consecutive season. Only the final game defeat to Mt. Carmel prevented Shikellamy’s claiming the Southern Division title of the Eastern Conference. The Braves, as usual, featured a high-pow- ered offense with a stalwart defense. With co- captain Ken Weir and halfback Jim Williams doing the bulk of the running, the powerful team unleashed an awesome ground attack complemented by a fine pass offense centering on quarterback Bill Hoffman. They recorded three shut-outs while limiting all but one op- ponent, Governor Miflin, to two touchdowns or less. Ably led by co-captain Harry Trego and end Mac Fleming, the defense was the backbone of the team limiting their ten oppo- nents to a meager sixty-nine points. 74 nffD 1 Cross-Country The cross-country team put forth a fine effort in Coach Diehl’s ini- tial year. Anchored by senior John Sees, the Shikellamy harriers com- piled an admirable record against unyielding competition. The team exhibited improvement, though not shown in its record. By op- erating their football concession stand, conducting many fund raising projects, and a beautiful prom, they proved to be assets to this school year. Next year they face even greater challenges, but with the help of their advisor, Mr. Teyssier, and their class officers: President Kenneth Troutman, Vice—President David Kelly, Secretary Becky Bourne, and Treasurer Cynthia Trout, they will succeed. jLw i J 8' A La II LEFT: 1st Row: D. Little did we know what task lay before us. Long, long hours of hard work and challenges were tackled. Meetings, pictures, layouts, cropping, deadlines — all these to be dealt with. Once again, the editors and their staffs used new layouts, increased the amount of copy and candids, and produced what we hope to be an accurate por- trait of this year of beginnings” at Shikellamy. However, all this work was not done by us alone. We had excellent advisors whose experience and talents are unsurpassable. Our most sincere thanks go to Mr. Charles Lewis for all his help and advice, and for his optimistic nature and good humor; to Mr. Schindler for his kind patience and ability to meet our close deadlines; and to Mr. Ed Patrick, of Taylor Publishing Company, for always being there when we needed him most. With this collection of memories left behind, the seniors of 1971 embark upon a new year of beginnings. 164 FAR LEFT: P. McCrccry. LOWER LEFT: R. Yoxheimcr. LEFT: Mr. C. Lewis, P. Mc- Crecry, J.
