MIRROR 1968 SHIELDS JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL SEYMOUR, INDIANA SEYMOUR PUBLIC LIBRARY SEYMOUR, INDIANA OUR SCHOOL IN ACTION What is a school? Everyone knows what a school is, but has anyone consulted the dictionary for a definition? The dictionary defines a school as — 1. An institution for the teaching of children, 2. An institution for specialized education within a building. 3. The process of teaching and learning. 4. Teaching, drilling, and disciplining in a specific knowledge or skill. Shields Junior High School easily meets these four requirements for a good, well- balanced education for its nine hundred and eighty students who daily attend their classes . On this page is the main building of our school. As the students enter this building each day they have the opportunity to pursue their educational processes to their fullest capacity. JAMES T. THOMPSON JACK OATHOUT President Vice-President SUPERINTEyOEyT Our Superintendent of the Seymour Community Schools is Mr. Robert B. Bulleit, who as the executive officer of our school, carries out the policies and administrative details necessary for the effective operation of the schools. LESTER W. SWENGEL Secretary GEORGE BOWMAN CHARLES W. CORDES DONALD H. ERNEST ROBERT B. BULLEIT HARRY SCHEPMAN The Board of School Trustees is a group of seven men who maintain a well- organized school system and serve as the policy-making body, having jurisdiction over the school system and its employees. PRINCIPAL ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL This year, for the first time, our school has an Assistant Principal, Mr. Joe A. Pitman, Many school matters pertaining to both students and teachers are daily brought to his attention and many per- sonal problems are solved in his office. CHAEILES H. ENGLEHARDT Mr, C.H, Englehardt, the Principal of our own Shields Junior High School, is the person responsible for seeing that special supervisors, teachers, and stu- dent body maintain the highest degree of efficiency in an orderly and friendly school environment. JOE A. PITMAN COUNSELORS JANE CORYELL Girls ' Guidance Counselor SAMUEL SINN Boys ' Guidance Counselor To Mrs. Coryell, the Counselor for the girls, and to Mr. Sinn, the boys ' counselor, goes the responsibility of the attendance and the very personal problems of the stu- dents for the best performance possible in their classes and activities at Shields Junior High School. SUPERVISORS AND SPECIAL TEACHERS MISS WILLMA ROSE SMITH School Nurse MRS. ANNETTE K. TEST Attendance Director Many special teachers are employed by the Seymour Community Schools to help stu- dents with speech and hearing problems, problems with vision, and personal health problems. Accurate attendance records must be kept by each school and the service of the Attendance Director is most important in this respect. The Supervisor of Cafeterias sees that each student who eats lunch at school has a well-balanced, healthful meal. MISS CARRIE O. RYAN Supervisor Of Cafeterias MRS, MIRIAM EuDALY Speech Hearing Therapist MRS. NANCY ERP Speech Hearing Therapist OFFICE MRS, DOREEN DEPUTY Treasurer MRS. UNDA MARSH Secretary The many, many services of Mrs. Deputy, and Mrs. Marsh would be far too numerous to name, but much of the action in our school is centered around their diversified duties . Specifically, Mrs. Deputy, among her other duties, is the school treasurer, and Mrs. Marsh is the secretary for the school. COOKS SUPERVISOR: MISS CARRIE RYAN Left to right; Betty Taylor, Lois Wayman, Avis Burrell, Marjorie Patman, Gertrude Gregory, Gladys Burchell, Mar; arette Pollert. Many students when asked their favorite subject reply, Lunch. To the ladies in the Cafeteria who work long and hard hours goes the credit for this reply. A well- balanced, wholesome meal is a necessity for the body and the mind to function properly. There can be no doubt that these ladies are helping the students to main- tain a healthy body to attend school and a keen mind to master school subjects. ACTION IN THE CAFETERIA CUSTODIANS RAYMOND SWEANY ROY SHULER Neatness, cleanliness, and comfortable surroundings are essentials to good educa- tion and these four men are doing everything possible to provide a clean, neat building for all who teach, study, and work at our school. ARNOLD VICE SAM EMILY FACULTY m FACULTY The men and women directly responsible for the classroom teaching and education of the students are the teachers of our school. Since the theme of this yearbook is OUR SCHOOL IN ACTION, the classroom teachers are well aware of the truth of this theme. Barbara Barnett, English, Spanish Norman M. These boys and girls are really responsible for all the activities of the school and without our students in grades seven, eight, and nine there would be no school. Seymour swept four dual meets and was especially strong in the three invitationals. The highlights of the year were the invitationals at Bloomington. Seymour placed three boys in the top ten to outdistance twenty- five other schools. Mark Emkes was second, Charles Fox was fifth, and Joe Hackman came in tenth. While at Seymour the C wls swept all the first three places to run off with an eight team field. Mark Emkes set a new course record in a time of 8:08. 1. Mark was closely followed by Joe Hack- man and Charles Fox. Bill Acton along with Fred Hines supplied ample support by finishing seventh and twelfth respectively. At Columbus Seymour was piled against another undefeated team, DeSales of Louisville. The Owls were at their best, placing three men in the top five to earn themselves the top spot from eleven other schools. Mark Emkes set a new freshmen record in the time of 7:43 seconds. Mark finished second, fol- lowed by Hackman fourth, Charles Fox fifth, Bill Acton thirteenth, Fred Hines twenty-fifth, Leon Taylor forty-third, and Jim Noelker forty-seventh. The Owls not only proved themselves worthy opponents, but were well-Uked for their sports- manship and high attitude. Looking forward to next year, the boys will be moving to high school and are planning to make themselves known in the world of sports, and, of course, the coach will be looking for new boys to fill their shoes. Tom Barbour exchanges the baton with Baron Hill on the last leg of the 440 yard relay. The relay team; Tom Barbour, Baron Hill, Doug Richardson, and Tim Barbour established another school record. Charles Fox wins the 880 yard run again. Charles was undefeated this year and set a new school record. INTERESTED SPECTATORS 54 FOOTBALL GRADE 9 MR. HACKER, MR. KNIGHT, COACHES The football season this year was one of constant defensive improvement. With the two consecutive losses fresh in the teams memory, they concentrated their efforts on making it more difficult for the opposition to score. As the scores for the remainder of the season indicate, the effort put forth was not in vain. It must be said that this year was a very successful football year for the ninth grade team and give them all a deserved well done . PATTISON, MR. HACKER, COACHES Although amateur wrestling has achieved its greatest popularity within the last two decades, it is by no means a new sport. Wrestling is of value to any athletic program because it gives the small boy, as well as the larger boys a chance to actively participate in varsity competition. Wrestling, although relatively new in the Seymour School system, shows promise as an up and coming spectator sport. WINTIN, SPONSOR This year for the first time our school has an organization known as the PEP CLUB. Its membership is about two hundred, including the cheerleaders and athletes who automatically become members by virtue of their abilities. The members of the club pledged themselves to abide by the rules set forth in the constitution of the organization. Each member was admitted to the Shields Junior High athletic events by a Pep Club card which was purchased during the organization process of the club. Enthusiasm has waxed high at the games this year and members of the club not only attended the games of their own particular class, but the games of all three classes. The Pep Band, under the direction of Mr. Gregory, deserves much credit for its mu- sical renditions at the games during the season. The organization of the PEP CLUB and the PEP BAND instilled a new enthusiam for the Junior High games. 58 SOME OF THESE STUDENTS ARE MEMBERS OF THE PEP CLUB. 59 BASKETBALL GRADE NINE, COACHES: MR. LASATER, MR. BECK The freshman basketball teams of the Shields Junior High School enjoyed another successful year in athletics. The freshman teams are broken into two teams, the Purple and the White, both teams playing separate schedules. During the year for special games there is a combination of both teams. The thought behind two freshman teams is to allow as many boys as possible to participate, thus being fairly sure not to miss any varsity prospects. Mr. Lasater coached the White team, and completed the season with ten wins and one loss. Mr. Beck coached the Purple team and his season record was fifteen wins and two losses. Both coaches are looking forward to another fine season in athletics. If we include judgment, in- dividual and team progress in abilities, aggressiveness, and desire, the season picture is not nearly as bleak. Two early wins in the season gave us the desire for more, but the problem of putting the ball throught the basket plagued us continually. Not until the closing weeks of the season did the games progress with team effort and spark with aggressiveness that we had been searching for since early season. Near wins over Madison and Salem gave us new perspectives for the remainder of this season and, hopefully, for coming seasons. Thus did Mr. Knight, the eighth grade coach, summarize the 1967-1968 basketball season for the eighth grade basket- ball team. This name was chosen by the staff from some two hundred and fifty entries in a Name the Newspaper contest. Mike Hill and Mike Simpson, both eighth graders, submitted identical entries and were the winners. Though it had a late start, through the capable leadership of co-editors Doug Richardson and Carolyn Anderson and advisers Mr. Lambertus and Mr. Rorhman, the newspaper soon moved forward with rollicking speed. It appeared twice a month throughout the year and sold for seventy- five cents per semester. To accomplish this general aim, situations must be developed to provide the children with problems and a need to solve the prob- lems . Small classes and individualized instruction help the children to achieve the academic skills necessary for living in today ' s world. The children must be helped to establish good work, habits which will include training with experiences designed to promote emotional stability and self-confidence. The eligibility of children for the special education program is determined by tests and psychological examinations which are administered by trained and licensed per- sonnel. The children are separated into three groups according to chronological age. The children at Shields Junior High School are the oldest of the three groups. Two classes for younger children are located elsewhere in the city. 86 STUDENTS IN ACTION... HERE, THERE, AND EVERYWHERE Gillaspj 87 y 88 ' 1 L k  , , j r—| I JULY 04
