SHS Welcomes Four New Teachers Sherrard High School had four new teachers join the staff in the Fall of 1987. They were as follows: Lori Shinpaugh, Jr. High English; Brian Hutton, government and history; Robert Brooks, band and chorus; and Elaine Clawsen, health. Ms. Shinpaugh was quoted as saying, “I love teaching here. I especially love the students.” She had previously taught two years at Westmer. Besides teaching Ju- nior High English, Ms. Shinpaugh is the cross country coach. Though she admits to not having coached cross-country be- fore she has been running since 1981. This is Mr. Hutton’s first year of teaching. He says, Teaching here has it’s mo- ments; and in general, it is a fun exper- ience.” He coaches the Sherrard High School Freshman Boys basketball team and also assists Mr. Flecker with the Var- sity Boys basketball team. Mr. Brooks is not new to the band direct- ing business. He has taught band and cho- rus at Winola for the past seven and a half years. He likes teaching here but says that our music department is different than at Winola. For example, he has twice the room to teach fewer groups. The final faculty addition is Mrs. Clawsen. She likes teaching at the high school lev- el. She previously taught grade school P.E. in the Sherrard district. She will also coach the Jr. High Girls basketball team. She says, “There is a lot of difference between teaching here than when I was teaching grade schools simply because the actual context of my job is different. In the high school system, I find that I get a lot of support from other staff members and administration.” She has coached Jr. High Girls basketball and volleyball in the past and will continue to do so this year. We hope you all enjoyed your first year of teaching at Sherrard High School. Wel- come aboard! Top Right Ms Shinpaugh always greets her stu- dents with a smile. The Tiger Spirit Rose Everyone was filled with excitement during homecoming week. Monday through Wednesday everyone was in Sherrard get- ting their floats ready for Thursday night — “The Parade and Bonfire.” The big game was Friday night against Orion. Thursday night arrived and everyone was filled with suspense to find out the king and queen? whose float would win? and which class would get the spirit stick? Once the bonfire got started Mr. Hunt announced that the Junior High float won. He also introduced Queen Christine Newton and King Marty Anderson. Later after everyone’s spirit rose, Marty Anderson announced that the Seniors had won the spirit stick. Top: Camera Club carefully drives their homecoming train through Sherrard.
