They were as follows: Lori Shinpaugh, Jr. High English; Brian Hutton, government and history; Robert Brooks, band and chorus; and Elaine Clawsen, health. Ms. Shinpaugh was quoted as saying, “I love teaching here. I especially love the students.” She had previously taught two years at Westmer. Besides teaching Ju- nior High English, Ms. Shinpaugh is the cross country coach. Though she admits to not having coached cross-country be- fore she has been running since 1981. This is Mr. Hutton’s first year of teaching. He says, Teaching here has it’s mo- ments; and in general, it is a fun exper- ience.” He coaches the Sherrard High School Freshman Boys basketball team and also assists Mr. Flecker with the Var- sity Boys basketball team. Mr. Brooks is not new to the band direct- ing business. He has taught band and cho- rus at Winola for the past seven and a half years. He likes teaching here but says that our music department is different than at Winola. For example, he has twice the room to teach fewer groups. The final faculty addition is Mrs. Clawsen. She likes teaching at the high school lev- el. She previously taught grade school P.E. in the Sherrard district. She will also coach the Jr. High Girls basketball team. She says, “There is a lot of difference between teaching here than when I was teaching grade schools simply because the actual context of my job is different. In the high school system, I find that I get a lot of support from other staff members and administration.” She has coached Jr. High Girls basketball and volleyball in the past and will continue to do so this year. We hope you all enjoyed your first year of teaching at Sherrard High School. Wel- come aboard! Top Right Ms Shinpaugh always greets her stu- dents with a smile. Monday through Wednesday everyone was in Sherrard get- ting their floats ready for Thursday night — “The Parade and Bonfire.” The big game was Friday night against Orion. Thursday night arrived and everyone was filled with suspense to find out the king and queen? whose float would win? and which class would get the spirit stick? Once the bonfire got started Mr. Hunt announced that the Junior High float won. He also introduced Queen Christine Newton and King Marty Anderson. Later after everyone’s spirit rose, Marty Anderson announced that the Seniors had won the spirit stick. Top: Camera Club carefully drives their homecoming train through Sherrard. As always, many students were involved. Thirteen skits filled two acts. Hosts for the evening were Bill and Bob Stanley. Faculty Director. Tom Swegle, thought the show to be very successful. Students and directors had a lot of fun and raised a fair sum of money Money that was earned went towards the Spring Musical. The actors and crews all had a great time throughout the practices and performances. MORP. of course, is PROM spelled backwards. Everything else is about the opposite of Prom. The themes for every MORP dance are entertainment and getting to know the AFS foreign students better in an informal situa- tion. The dance is one of several fund raisers which enable the AFS to contri- bute to the support of exchange strdents like Brendi and Roque. Can you imagine what this year would have been like without them? The AFS Chapter is grateful to all who supported them this year, not only at MORP, but in all their activities. MORP 17 Dirty Dirty Work at the Crossroads”, the fall play, was a melo- drama which gave the audience a chance to boo the evil villain Munro Murgatroyd as he tried to coerce the lovely young heroine, Nellie Lovelace, into giving up control of her property. But, in the end Nellie was saved by the shady Ida Rhinegold, and was able to marry her sweetheart, Adam Oakhart. Along the way, the plot offered the audi- ence many an unexpected twist as well as several songs of the Gay 90’s. A small cast worked hard to produce the play, and the results were every bit as good as Sherrard play-going audi- ences have come to expect. With a musical presented every spring, the drama department has been trying to offer a variety of fall plays, ranging from comedy to serious drama to melodrama over the last three years. A.F.S. hosted its annual Kiss the Pig Contest. The students paid money (I am sure it was very hard earned money too!!) to see the teacher of their choice KISS a very cute little pig. The lucky winner was our new History teacher, Brian Hutton. Mr. Hutton seemed to have enjoyed his kiss quite a bit especially when he had to kiss it twice. Another hit with A.F.S. was the fortune cookie sale. This too was a big success. Various prizes were awarded to many of the SHS students and all got some fabulous fortunes! Introducing Left: Roque Pinella and Right: Brendaley Danin Art students are successful. The Art students at Sherrard were very energetic about their work this year. The top ten students in the art class were allowed to travel to Chi- cago and participate in art ac- tivities. All School Senate The All-School Senate had a productive and successful year in 1987-88. The Senate met every Thursday morning in Mr. Docherty’s room, their sponsor. One of the main duties of All-School Senate is to organize Home- coming week. There were different dress-up days all throughout the week. The parade was held on Thursday; and the dance on Saturday. The Senate held their second an- nual “spirit-week” in the spring. Each day a different activity was held. Sucker Day was especially a big hit. They recently bought a tractor which was repaired, sandblasted and repainted. The tractor was bought with the funds from the corn plot harvest and candy sales. The chapter also had a mem- ber, Marlin McManus, qualify to receive the state FFA degree. Yearbook 45 Varsity Club Donates Weights Varsity Club is an organization designed to hon- or students who earned varsity letters. Mr. Rick Anderson and Mrs. Vicky Tyler are the spon- sors of Varsity Club. Varsity Club helped the weight room this year by having a drawing for a color television dur- ing Basketball season. Paul Watson was the lucky winner. From the money made by the drawing, the Varsity Club donated weights to the weight room. There, he not only completed high school but also discovered a new lifestyle. Todd learned the Portugese language before leaving. While away he learned the responsibility of being away from home. During his stay, some hobbies included ping pong, street soccer, and if we know Todd - basketball. One game he scored 27 points. His quote. God. what's wrong with me? I'm AWESOME! He was also involved in a few tennis tournaments. Aside from the new and exciting experiences, Brazil had it’s downfalls. Todd found the Christmas season to be one of them. With the high temperatures, and the lack of decorations and more importantly family, the season wasn't the most spirited. He also wrote home once wishing for a Whitey's Reeces Peanut Butter Cup shake. Exchange student programs can bring American students closer to students of other countries. Todd seemed to think that we Americans tend to be blind to the world around us. Hopefully the many exchange programs can open our eyes and let us see others more clearly. They work very hard to give our school the best. They have been busy working on a new project late- ly. The school board is working on an annexation with the Winola district. During the year, the Winola students were able to visit our school. There was also a dance for the parents. Each Sherrard student was allowed to volunteer to host a Winola student for the day. The Winola stu- dents were here for two days and came during sec- ond, third, and fourth hours. They also ate lunch with our students. The students seemed to have a good time. The band and chorus put on three concerts: Christmas. Spring, and Pops. Our band and chorus participated in the IHSA solo and ensemble con- test. Sherrard had students receive first division ratings in 5 catagories: Flute - Donna Moreland Clarinet Tenor Sax duet - Theresa Fearn Flute duet • Donna Moreland Clarinet Tenor Sax trio- Theresa Fearn, Steve Gauley, Janna Brown Vocal- Brian Stone. Sherrard also had three band members selected to play in the St. Ambrose Quad City Honor Band. They were: Percussion - Bill Stanley Bassoon • Noelle Coffin Tenor Saxaphone - Steve Gauley. The band and chorus hosted the IHSA organiza- tion contest, and they participated in the Olympic Conference Band Festival at Rockridge. In addi- tion, they also performed at the commencement ceremony. The Sherrard Tiger's Marching Band marches through Sherrard during the Home- coming parade As a reward for the band’s hard work they will be taking a trip to Great America. Most of the trip will be paid for by fund raising the band and chorus worked on throughout the year. Band 93 The Road to Success The usefulness of the Sherrard High School Entrepreneurs was a learning experience in marketing a product and managing a business. The product this year was Sherrard Tiger sweatshirts and t-shirts. Even though the SHS entrepreneurs encountered difficulties with both the suppliers and employees, they suc- ceeded in making a profit for their stock- holders. A $2 share of stock paid a $21 divi- dend. They feel their product not only pro- vided a learning experience but also added to school spirit. The experience of running the corporation showed them how hard one must work to succeed in the real world of business. The Business Management class would like to thank Mrs. Cedarstrom for her help and sup- port and Mr. Kent Crippen for sharing his busi- ness experience. Having Another Good Year. For (he last half of the semester the Driver's Ed students work in a study hall. Mrs Clawson takes a break Elaine Clawson The Driver’s Education teacher at SHS is Mr. Rick Anderson. Mr. Anderson enjoys the on-the- road training more than the classroom teaching. He says ‘‘there is more excitement in the on-the-road training.” Why would he say that? Mrs. Elaine Clawson is teaching health this year. She covers sev- eral units in her class that sup- plies important information on issues that are coming up in these young students lives. Drivers Ed Health 95 Senior English added to curriculum Scott Calhoun Gwendolyn Blais Tom Watkins Katherine Lootens The English department at SHS offers eight different courses. They are: English I, II, III, IV, IV AP, Journalism, Oral Communications, and Senior English. Mrs. Blais says, “the hardest part of her class is for her to keep her classes awake throughout the day.” The majority of English II is spent on speeches and Julius Caesar. One student said, “I really didn’t want to do speeches, but after the first couple they weren’t really that bad.” English III classes had their ever popular term paper to do. Even though they take a lot of time, research, and hard work the end result is worth the extra effort. English IV read and studied Shakespear’s MacBeth, they also wrote their own sonnets and epigrams. English IV AP did some indepen- dent research on mythology this year. Senior English classes got an introduction to Greek and Roman mythology. They also read a lot of Modern English Literature. The Journalism class studied the different styles of journalism, what journalism is, and the basic form for writing. The second semester was dedicated to the produc- tion of the Prowler. They also covered some of the different aspects of broadcast journalism. Some of the announcements this year were done by the Oral Communi- cations classes. They also studied about parlimentary procedures, and they also did some debating. 96 English French classes fun? C’est VraiH! Thomas Swegle Maidena Navratil Patricia Lane The French department has 166 students enrolled in French. Ms. Navratil has 70 French I students whom she says are “ex- tremely enthusiastic about the subject. The French I students memorize and re- ceit poetry, play French games, and write their own dialogs. Mr. Swegle has 70 French 11 students, 10 French III students, and 11 French IV students. Mr. Swegle says, “I like teaching the advanced French classes because you do not have to spend as much time on the little things as you do in French I. The students are able to do more on their own.” Mr. Swe- gle's French students also get some fun time by playing the French version of Win, Lose, Or Draw, playing tapeworm, doing group activities, and doing individ- ual projects. The book fair held in the spring was a big success. The library made $225 which is used to buy new paperbacks. Mrs. Lane said, “The library aides and Mrs. Plohr really did a super job this year.” Some of their responsibilities were carding and shelving books, processing magazines and new books, putting AV materials up, and other odd jobs. One of the aides said “being an aide helps you see just how much work it takes to keep a library run- ning smoothly, and working in there is also a lot of fun.” Top: Mike Praet is taking some time out in the library to study for a trig test Bottom Carla Herz- berg and Tim Foster seem to be enjoying French class. Thanks to the Nutrition class all we had to do was look around the cafeteria. One of the projects for the Nutrition class was “School Awarness Week.” So- dium content, cholesteral content, and calorical content were the “Awarness” topics for the year. Foods I classes sold pumpkin rolls for the second year. Mrs. Holdsworth said, “sales were actually pretty good this year.” Once again the Child Care class held a play-school. They had 18 children involved this year. At Christ- mas time Paul Watson played Santa Claus. The Crafts class made baskets and were graded on their cross-stitch and painting projects. This years Sophmores were the first to be able to take a proficency test in their Freshman year to see if they could get out of taking Consumer Edu- cation. For those who couldn’t, they got to learn such things as how to correctly file an income tax form, and they also learned a little about the differ- ent kinds of insurances and consumer protection laws. The Horse Science class went to the state horse judging competion, where the team received 3rd place. Individually, Roxanne Fox placed 5th and Karla Peterson placed 8th. The other Industrial Arts classes made various projects such as drill presses and vices which were made by the Metals classes. The Ag III class reconstructed a tractor, and the Drafting classes once again made their dream house which were put on display at the band’s spring concert. All of the shop students have made various projects throughout the year that lead to better understanding of industrialization and its application as a form of a career. Industrial Arts 99 MATH + COMPUTERS FRUSTRATIONS The Math and Computer Department at Sherrard has a wide variety of classes. The classes provide a basic background of computer skills and prepare the students for college level math courses. Consumer and General Math are taught by Mr. Shaffer. The main goal of these courses is to reinforce basic math skills and to prepare students for everyday living. It is always helpful to know how to balance a checkbook or the different types of financing before you actually have to deal with it. Mr. Docherty and Ms. Newton teach Algebra I. The students are prepared with a foundation of algebra skills so they may progress in the math sequence. Mary Lou Cassidy Joseph Docherty Geometry is taught by Mrs. Cassidy. In geometry class, the students decorated a Christmas tree with geometric figures A bridge contest was also held, which has been done for 6 years now. In the bridge contest, you are given 30 straws, 3x19 piece of cardboard, and an unlimited number of straight pins. The bridge that can hold the most weight, without collapsing, wins. Algebra II is a preparation for the advanced math courses, and the foundation for college math skills. Algebra II is taught by Mr. Shaffer. Mr. Docherty also teaches Trigonometry Advance Math, Calculus, and Computer Programming. These courses prepare the student for college level math. Computer Programming teaches the students to write pro- grams. At the end of the year, the class is introduced to the computer language Pascal. Steve Bakeris Pam Hughes Vicky Tyler Kelly McKee The highlight of physical education classes this year was a “Superstars” competition held in the spring. Students participated in five of eight events and were given points for individual places in each event. Prizes were presented to the top boy and girl, from each class, in each event. Prizes were also awarded for the most points totaled from all of the five events. In addition to the “superstar” competition, units in folkdancing, gatorball, and leisure time activities were new to the program this year. Fitness test were included again in the fall and spring along with a wide variety of other activities. Students were also given the opportunity, for the first time, to be involved in a intramural program. Volleyball was offered in the fall, and basketball in the winter. Approximately 100 students participated in both programs; due to the positive student response, plans are now being made to increase the activities for next year. Maidens Navratil Kathy Newsom Brenda Sojka Gordon Weslund The Science Department consist of five teachers. These teachers share the responsi- bility of teaching biology. Chemistry, Phys- ics, and IPS ( Introduction ot Physical Sci- ence). IPS is a required class taught by Mr. Flecker and Mr. Weslund. The class covers the ba- sics of physical science. To reach the gradu- ation requirements, you need to take two years of science. Biology is taught by Ms. Newsom, Ms. Nav- ratil, and Mrs. Sojka. A highlight of this year was the molluck meal prepared by the stu- dents. The meal consisted of stuffed clams, snails, mussels, oysters, and other delicacies which the students had the option to sample. Chemistry and Physics are also taught by Mrs. Sojka. The main goal in Chemistry ac- cording to Mrs. Sojka, “Not to blow the place up.” Although her class did not blow up the school, they did manage to flood the Chemistry room during a lab. Who said school is all work and no play? In the physics class, many labs consisted of work with slinkies to study waves. Other gadgets such as a physics floater which tests to see which objects stay airborne the long- est, and ripple tanks which are used in the study of waves. An easy way to differate these classes is that if its green, its Biology. If it blows up, its Chemistry and if it doesn’t work, its Physics. A student at Sherrard must complete one-half year of Government and one and one- half additional credits in social studies to fulfill the graduation require- ments. The Government class is a required class in the state of Illinois. The Illinois and the United States Constitutions are covered in detail. This helps the students in understanding how the government works and also learning their rights as citizens. Mr. Schneider and Mr. Hutton teach this course. Mr. Johnson teaches World Geography and Current Events. In Current Events, students watch television news programs like 60 Minutes. This keeps the students informed of world affairs. World Geography is the study of the Soviet Union and Western Europe. Mr. Hamerly educates his classes in the ancient history of Rome and the Middle East in his World History class. Studies also include the Middle Ages through modern times. Customs, life-styles, and agriculture of these time periods is also discussed. United States History is taught by Mr. Hutton. This course provides a backround of information on the Civil War to the present. As a combined assignment, Mr. Hutton’s and Mrs. Looten s classes wrote a term paper. A grade was taken in both classes. Sociology is a popular course at Sherrard. Social problems and customs of the United States are covered. One of the most interesting aspects of this class occurs when students become “parents” for one week. The “chil- dren” are apples, grapefruits, oranges, or any suitable fruit. A daily journal must be kept on the “children” and the events of their day. During this week, the word ‘responsibility’ takes on new meaning. Above Right: What’s wrong Jodi Loucks. The Special Education Department has two types of classes, one type is the Resource class, the other is called Instructional. Resource stu- dents spend part of the day (less than 50%) in these classes. Students in the Instructional tend to take all courses (except for P.E.) in this department. The three Special Education teachers are Ms. McKee, Mrs. Gresh, and Mr. Hammond. They are responsible for implementing individualized education plans (IEP’s) for each student. The lEP’s include specific goals and objectives that tell what the students will accomplish. The pro- grams aim at certain problem areas which differ from student to student. Requried classes are also taught for the stu- dents that cannot handle the level of difficulty. Students that are enrolled in the regular classes are provided with support and extra tutoring. The nature of each students disability makes it necessary for each class to be small. This allow- ing individual attention and adapting the cur- riculum to the needs of each student. They ended the season undefeated allowing their opponents only twenty-six points combined. This type of defensive performance was aided by the also successful offense demonstrated by a dominant sophomore field. Darin McCombs and Bret Scarborough, two of the Tiger standouts credit their success to the hard work everyone put into the team during practice Coach Greg Shaffer agreed. “1 think there was a lot of commitment involved this year along with determination,” quoted Coach Shaffer. Whatever the reason the J.V. squad of 1987 has a lot to look forward to, not to mention the Tiger fans who anticipate future playoff appearances from this squad. Bob Millington shooting a 38, and a 4th place finish at one of their tournaments this season. By the end of the season, the girls fought hard and played well together. One of the high- lights of the season was the “Pack the Place” promotion against Monmouth the varsity won 42-29. Coach Westlund said, “he will definitely miss the seniors and they can never be replaced.” One of the games that was a let-down was against Aledo when a Aledo player hit a half-court shot at the buzzer to put Aledo ahead by one. To end the season, the Lady Tigers pre- sented three awards, most points and most rebounds went to Lori Canfield, while Kristy Docherty had the highest free throw percentage. The Tiger team had some great high points of the season. One occurred during Christmas vacation at a tournament at Sterling-Newman. Only after winning some tough fought battles, Sherrard did make it to the Championship game. The Tigers suffered a close loss, even with the aid of junior Erik Holley, who made three 3-point shots within the last minute and a half of the game. One other high point came at the Regional Finals. The strong Tiger team lost in double-overtime to the long time rival, Rockridge. This ended the season and left many fans depressed, but one certainly could not complain about the season as a whole. Right Varsity team members Row 1 Roque Pmella. Brian White. Erik Holley.
