In the Spring of ’72 The Miracle Worker, a very dramatic and touching play, was staged by nineteen high school students last spring. The Kellers decide to again seek help for their daughter, Helen, who be- came blind and deaf as a result of an illness of her infancy. Annie Sullivan is brought to the Keller homestead from the Perkins Institute for the Blind in Boston. Having previously been blind, Annie feels she can teach Helen to take care of herself and to talk through the use of the alphabet for the blind. She will not give in to Helen’s temper tantrums. Annie is frequently disturbed by ghosts from the past. Jimmie, her deceased brother, calls to her for comfort and repeatedly asks her to stay with him. Annie says she has to leave him, but she will never love anyone again. As the play pro- gresses, Annie disciplines Helen and teaches her the alphabet. The play ends with the touching scene in which Helen finally understands what words are and Annie freely admits her love for Helen. Director.................. A Doctor.................. Sponsor Mrs. Wassenhove suggested ways the new club could earn enough money to finance a field trip. Among these were the painting of the flats for “The Miser” and the holding of a spring art fair in which students may sell their own work. Mrs. Wassenhove also suggested selling silk screened posters. As pictured, this printing process includes four steps. At right Claudia cuts a design into the film. Next the stencil is fixed to the silk screen as Doug is doing below. Following this a squeegee is used to force ink through the open areas of the film and onto the paper; in the-bottom picture Cindy, Walter, and Ed work together to speed production. Finally the finished print is set out to dry; in the bottom right picture Tom is laying out signs which are to be used at Jacobs Supermarket in Milan. It has been a team built on pride, dedication, and the desire to be the best football team in the area. The boys have achieved every goal that they set at the begin- ning of the year. In achieving these goals they have set numerous new records at Sherrard High School. This team has not only been 8-0 this year, but it may have been one of the best teams ever to play in the Cornbelt. These boys have had a season that they will always remember and be proud of. —Coach Wayne DeSutter 130 Row 1-Manager Derek Guyton, Pat Eddingfield, Jeff Hultgren, Mark Run- ge, Ed Dasso, GrcgCastrey, Tom Mil- ler, Steve DePorter, Manager Gary Simonson. Conference. The Tigers Strive to Attain Their Goal . . . The 1972-73 basketball team has been one which will be remembered for years to come. Some of the team goals that they ac- complished were to win the Cornbelt Tour- nament and the Cornbelt Conference. Their individual goals are 40% or better in shoot- ing from the field, 65% or better from the free throw line, 10 rebounds or more per game or 35 per team, and double figures from each team member. These young men have dedicated themselves individually to each game; and when joining together, they have dedicated themselves as a team. 1 be- lieve that the pride they have developed in the 1972-73 season will be remembered and carried with them in their future. —Coach Bob Jackson and Become the Cornbelt Champs Junior Varsity Betokens a Victorious Future Cheerleaders at Right: Doreen Braden, Geralyn Dhaemcrs, Diane Lamb, Kath McManus, Dorrie Bocns, Alternate-Bonnie Coyne. With only the Orion Frosh-Soph Tourney to go, the 1972-73 Sherrard Frosh-Soph team finished the regular season with a 13-5 rec- ord, which was good enough for a second place finish in the conference. It was a sea- son of great achievements but also bitter disappointments. Discouraging were the five losses, but to heighten our losses was the realization that three of the five could have and should have been won. But defi- nitely, the disappointments were outweighed by the accomplishments. It was a season of not only the thirteen victories, but also of victories in maturity, dedication, hustle, and team spirit. As coach, I am proud to have been associated with these young men, and 1 know that they can be proud of themselves both as individuals and as a team. —Coach Dave Swanson Row 1-Manager Pat McKinley, Greg Hudnall, Mark Mintecr, Dan McManus, Sam Bennett, Jim Winn, David Hemphill, Scott Guyton, Doug Bonick, Jeff Perry, Dale Fisher, Manager Doug Krahl.
