The Doctor in Spite of Himself’ Sganarelle, the woodcutter This is the age old story of a stubborn old man with an equally stubborn daughter. When Geronte forbids his daughter Lucinde to see her lover Le- andre, she mysteriously loses her ability to speak. A great doctor must be found to cure her. The searchers finally come to the house of Sganarelle, a woodcutter. Sganarelle's wife, Martine, angry at her husband, tells the two men that he is a great doctor.
