This year's newly-elected members were Jean White, Mary Jo Schurr, and Dane McCaw. Our Senior Class President good-naturedly submitted to his initiation. Carolyn and Roxanne are practicing shorthand by use of a record. 24 Studying income tax in Modern Problems is a nerve-wracking experience. In another minute the bell will ring--and off to class! CLASS OFFICERS: Jean White, Vice-President; Trudy Snell, Secretary; Chuck Anderson, President; Doris Anderson, Treasurer. 25 These Typing II students are trying out the new dictaphone. Personality and charm are the requirements for a super-salesman. It took four years of hard work to build this pyramid. We’ve mastered many difficult classes and assignments. Our class rings will be a constant reminder of our years at SHS. Our Prom Was a Fantasy Pam and Frank gaze at the waterfall, palm trees, and grass hut on Treasure Island. on “Zreasure Jstand ’ ’ Taking a brief rest on the island, Trudi and Chuck chat about the way their Junior class decorated the gym for the prom. At the bamboo table, Pam and her escort are served refreshments by the island girl Jane LaDue. 99 The Doctor in Spite of Himself’ Sganarelle, the woodcutter This is the age old story of a stubborn old man with an equally stubborn daughter. When Geronte forbids his daughter Lucinde to see her lover Le- andre, she mysteriously loses her ability to speak. A great doctor must be found to cure her. The searchers finally come to the house of Sganarelle, a woodcutter. Sganarelle's wife, Martine, angry at her husband, tells the two men that he is a great doctor. Thus begin the adventures of Sgan- arelle, The Doctor in Spite of Himself. Cast Sganarelle John Erickson Martine Mary Reedy Geronte Danny Janecke Lucinde Sharon Mueller Leandre Mike Sackfield Lucas Ed Nichols Jacqueline Mary Jo Schurr Valere Chuck Wiggins Thibalt Dane McCaw Perrona Pam Petty Robert Ted Rossiter Maids Patti Anderson Terri Ornelis 30 Threatened with a beating for meddling, Robert protests his good intentions. Was Our Junior Play Martine, Sganarelle's shrewish wife Upon his denial that he is a doctor, Sganarelle is severely beaten until he confesses that he is indeed a great physician. 31 This Satiric Play by Moliere Thibalt, an old man from the village, and his daughter Perrona consul the doctor about the girl's mother. As Thibalt describes the symptoms Sganarelle complains, Please try to speak a little more plainly. You are not at all clear about this matter. As Lucinde struggles to speak, Sganarelle ex- claims, What outlandish language is this? Why, I can't understand a word she says! As Sganarelle comforts Jacqueline, they are dis- covered by Lucas, Jac- queline's slow-witted hu- band. Had a Touch of Violence Lucinde assures a disguised Leandre that she will never marry any other man. When he discovers that Leandre has inherited a for- tune, Geronte readily approves of Lucinde's mar- riage to Leandre. Afrer Lucinde's outburst, Geronte pleads with Sgan- arelle to make his daughter dumb again. Martine assures her husband, Nobody shall say I de- serted my husband in his last moments. I shall not leave until I’ve seen you hanged! 33 Harold Watson, Larry Adams, Carolyn Koester, Bob Basala, Terry Harkey, and Leonard Carl- strom, along with Doris Anderson, Roxanne Youngberg, Sharon Mueller, and John Erickson, contributed many hours of long hard work to both the junior and senior class plays. Standing: Patty Benton, Janis Hurley, Sandra Harris, Corliss Miller, Karen Miller, Loren Zeitler. Sitting: Phil Thorn- burg, Trudy Snell, Janie Slaymaker, Danny Puckett, Ron Cameron, Ed Sims. Absent: Patty Grant. These people worked behind the scenes with help from some cast members. Elaine Johnson, Carol Lulow, Elaine Adams, Bonnie Christine. Toni Smith, Debbie Deel, Jan Prosser, and Jean White, with help from Mary Reedy, Patti Anderson, Pam Petty, and Bonnie Swinford, did a good job of making the physical appearances of members of both senior and junior play casts fit the characters. These underclassmen contributed their time to help make our senior class play a success. Standing: Rosa- lie Cameron, Janice Hajostek, Tarrilee Jennings. Cindee Sharer, Mona Meyer, and Carole Ash. Sitting: Steve Mayhew, Greg Hultgren, Doug Plank, and Paul Barnett. 35 The Inspector General” by Nikolai Gogol My friends, there is more to this than meets the eye. There's something behind all this--you mark my word! CAST Ivan Alexandrovitch Hlestakov John Erickson The Mayor Danny Janecke Artmy Fillipovitch Sam Ramsey Luka Lukitch Don Simmon Lyapkin-Tyapkin Dane McCaw Shepkin Larry Kurtenbach Bobchinsky Rick Anderson Dobchinsky Steve Puckett Mishka Dennis Pitman Drushenka Pam Petty The Constable Randy Barto The Police Chief Herb Schnoor Anna Mary Reedy Marya Patti Anderson Osip Chuck Wiggins Maid Roxanne Youngberg Waiter Gary Buckwalter Shopkeepers Dan Zwicker Phil Thornburg Larry Adams Sergeant's Wife Bonnie Sw inford Wives Sharon Mueller Doris Anderson Carol Lulow Guardsmen Ron Dawson Gary Buckwalter Inspector General Jerry Johnston The Inspector General, a satiric farce by Nikolai Gogol, takes place during the 19th century in Russia. The Mayor of a small town receives a letter saying that the Inspector Gen- eral is coming--incognito--with orders from the govern- ment. Hlestakov, a young man from Petersburg, is mis- taken for the Inspector General and takes advantage of the error. The corrupt town officials try to bribe the Inspector General , who is staying in the Mayor's home. He im- presses them with accounts of the great things he has done and proposes to Marya, the Mayor’s daughter. The towns- people discover their mistake only after Hlestakov has fled with their money; however, it is too late--the real Inspector General has arrived! Dobchinsky and Bobchinsky rush in with the news that they have seen the Inspector General at the inn. Drushenka considers Mishka to be an idiot and treats him accordingly. The Mayor and the Judge listen incredulously to the Post- master. This is the Mayor's sexy, but slow-witted maid. Hlestakov, disgusted with his food, says to the waiter, You're a nasty pig, and I won't discuss the matter any fur- ther. 37 Anna reads Anton's letter, ’Thanks to my faith in God, for 2 salted cucumbers, 1 2 portion of caviar, 1 ruble, 25 kopeks.' Good heavens! Has Anton lost his wits? Ivan assures Anna that at this moment he finds everything most pleasant. Anna gasps in amazement as Ivan collapses on the settee. The shopkeeper complains that the Mayor is nothing but a common thief. The Sergeant's Wife screams angrily, And do you know what else he did? He flogged me, a poor weak woman! Hlestakov declares that it is Anna, not Marya, he truly loves. The mayor pleads, Please don’t believe those shopkeepers. They're all liars and cheats. Marya exclaims, Now that’s enough! You think I'm only a provincial girl and you can--well, you can’t. I won't have it.” The townspeople have gathered to congratulate the Mayor on his good fortune. The Police Chief and the Constable discuss the forthcoming events. Shepkin insists that the Mayor must hear the news. “But I tell you, this is the most startling news. Hlestakov isn’t the Inspector General. In ominous tones the Guardsmen announce, The Inspector General has arrived from Petersburg--with instructions from the Government! He is here! ” 40 jumoRs JUNIOR CLASS OFFICERS: Brian Zwicker, Vice-President; Cathie Sloan, Sec retary; Judy Martin, Treasurer; Greg Hultgren, President. Mike also earned 14 points in the Varsity Conference Track Meet and was voted the most valuable member of the track team. This year's Homecoming, spon- sored annually by the Student Coun- cil, was one of the most successful Sherrard has ever had. The parade was held the night before the game and was followed by a snake dance and bonfire. Former Homecoming Kings and Queens were honored at the dance following a victorious, though rather damp, game with Westmer. Other activities sponsored by the Council members were a Christmas Party and a Student Council Week. Members of our student governing body attended a Cornbelt Conference Student Council Meeting at Westmer. There we discussed four main topics: (1) The Purpose of the Student Coun- cil; (2) National Honor Society; (3) School Spirit; and (4) The Election of Officers. We brought back many ideas for improving our own Student Coun- cil. CLIFFORD KING Superintendent Dear Student Friend, For the past three centuries the major emphasis in America has been on the development of our nat- ural resources. Our forefathers went West to find a new frontier and a chance to start over again. The unsettled land is now largely gone. Our future lies in developing our human resources - our minds and our spirits. Education can train our minds to create and use ideas. What we think governs how we act. If we act in a spirit of unselfish service, we can find pur- pose to life and happiness in our daily work. Edu- cation gives us the power to become better than we are. The patrons of Unit 200 make a major effort to provide you with good schools to help improve your mind and spirit. But no one else can make you im- prove yourself. You are the one who must resolve that T WILL BE SOMEBODY1 It is part of Ameri- ca 's glory that you have a chance to go as far as your ambition and ability will take you. Education is the key.
