The Ivy Tower Foreword Many people keep charm bracelets, adding charms to signify the important things they do not want to forget. These charms may mean little to a stranger, but the memories they bring back to the owner are priceless. The 1966 Ivy Tower staff sincerely hopes that your yearbook will be one of your most cherished possessions; and. like the charms on a bracelet, each picture will bring back memories of the classes, events, and activities in which you have participated. Sherrard High School Sherrard, Illinois Volume XXXII 1966 Dedication To Miss Pearl Barnes who, though she retired, came back to give us a helping 2 hand when we needed it, we proudly dedicate the 1966 Ivy Tower. RIND Drama Club; Jr. and Sr. Play Casts 28 RICHARD TAETS We Desperately Cling DWIGHT LANE HERGERT Band 29 As Rather Wistfully We Reach After Judy, Sherry, and Mary Louise finished planning their dream houses, all they had left to do was build them. Building a house concerns studying legal terms, choosing styles and architectural designs, and decorating. Allen, Bob, and Terry discovered a new world when they signed up for Chemistry this year. Regina, too, found she had to adjust to a new idea of studying when she de- cided to take shorthand. A lot of drill work and time make up this course which trained her for the business world. Our Graduation—the Final Fling Some of the English IV students get a big surprise when they learn that the musi- cal My Fair Lady comes from Shaw’s play, Pygmalion. It's fun to study this play in class when Rex Harrison and Audrey Hepburn occupy the lead roles in their minds. In Modern Problems Ricky and Ray dis- cover viewpoints in regard to problems the world faces today by reading inter- esting articles from Reader's Digest. These articles are written by many famous and successful people who are trying to teach citizens correct values and ideals. Even seniors sometimes have to get initiated! Mike good-naturedly went along with his fellow seniors' entertainment. One never really knows there is so much to typing until she signs up for the course. She takes timed tests, types budgets, and works on problems, problems, and more problems. That’s what it takes to be a good typist, though, isn’t it Marilyn? Behind the Footlights Is Another World of Building The Drama Club's Paperback Bookstore provides the student body with a wide assortment of books. Loretto tries to explain her disheveled appearance by saying The mystery begins to unravel when the manuscript is found, she was sidetracked when going to get the cream. Ask her where she was between 9 and 10! Sarcastically, Martha tells everyone they will have to prove she is the murderess. __ The Senior Play Was Our Town CAST Stage Manager Allen Holdsworth Doctor Gibbs Michael Palmer Joe Crowell James Collier Howie Newsome Richard Russell Mrs. Gibbs Jean McConnell Mrs. Webb Joyce Kistler George Gibbs Terry King Rebecca Gibbs Mary Louise Kettering Wally Webb William Rind Emily Webb Carita Ziemer Professor Willard Dale Roberts Mr. Webb Gerald Dawson 1st Woman in auditorium Suzanne Munson Man in auditorium Lynn Frye 2nd Woman in auditorium Marilyn Zwicker Simon Stimson Michael Miller Mrs. Soames Regina Dhaemers Constable Warren Carl Krahl Si Crowell Glenn Wilson Sam Craig James Langston Joe Stoddard James Epperly The stage manager waits for the audience to get settled before he describes our town to them. Here we find Mrs. Webb and her children, Emily and Wally, at breakfast. Meet Professor Willard of the State Univer- sity. Grover's Corners--mmm--let me see--Grover’s Corners lies on the old pleiocene granite of the Appalachian range. I may say it's some of the oldest land in the world. ... Every morning for a good many years Howie Newsome and Bessie have been delivering milk to the people of Grover’s Corners. Oh, good morning, Mr. Newsome. I told you four quarts of milk, but I hope you can spare me another. Joe Crowell, the paper boy, stops to talk a bit with Doc Gibbs who is on his way home from a baby case. George, Rebecca, and their mother, Mrs. Gibbs, find a few rare moments for conversation at the breakfast table. 39 Mrs. Gibbs and Mrs. Webb find time for a morning chat. Myrtle, one of those second- hand furniture men from Boston came to see me last Friday, and he offered me three hundred and fifty dollars for Grandmother Wentworth's high-boy, as I'm sitting here! Doc Gibbs and his wife have been conversing for twenty years now without any noticeable barren spells. There's that town gossip, Mrs. Soames, with her mouth open as usual. It's the worst scandal that ever was in this town! 40 Emily dreamily watches the stars and listens to the night sounds from her window. 1 think, if you hold your breath, you can hear the train all the way to Contookuck! Here's Si Crowell, Howie Newsome, and Constable Warren. The fellows are feeling bad about losing one of the best baseball pitchers Grover's Corners ever had. George is getting married this afternoon to Emily. Yes, it just won't be the same without him. George and Emily set out now into a world of their own. Emily is a little frightened by the idea of getting mar- ried, and her father is having quite a time convincing her that this is what she wants to do. Why, you’re marrying the best young fellow in the world. George is a fine fellow. The choir director, Simon Stimson, and some of the town ladies were on hand to sing at the wedding. 41 This is the cemetery and the people who will greet Emily when she leaves the world of the living. 42 Sam Craig has come back for his cousin’s funeral. Sad memories come to mind as he walks among these graves. l The funeral has begun. Joe Stoddard especially dislikes officiating at young people’s funerals. On a dark, rainy day, the town people pay their last respects to Emily and her family. Father and mother, husband, and father-in-law remain alone at Emily s grave for one more good-by. Oh, earth, you’re too wonderful for anyone to realize you. ” 43 Days of Wine and Roses” Was Our Prom Theme Ruth Anne and Rick toured The Gallery. Jack has just asked Joyce to dance. Terri Omelis helped a great deal on the yearbook this year. Her duties included the underclassmen’s divisions. Mary Jo Schurr and Jean White learned the basic ideas in editing a yearbook as they set up various pages throughout the Ivy Tower. 69 Shirley Mack, Gale Ornelis, Debbie Raatz, and Kathi Nimrick helped the annual staff sell yearbooks. The magazine sales captains, Mary Jo Schurr and Suzanne Munson, did a fine job of keeping the sale well organized. 70 TOP FIVE MAGAZINE SALESMEN: Carita Ziemer, first; Joyce Kistler, second; Diana Pace, third; Chuck Wiggins, fourth; Elaine Johnson, fifth. Student Council Acts as Voice of Students Each year the Student Council of Sherrard sponsors Homecoming and a Christmas party. A lot of work goes into the planning, advertising, and decorating for the Homecoming weekend. In addition to sponsoring these events, the council members attend a Cornbelt Conference Student Council meeting to discuss and exchange problems and ideas. Also, five members and Mr. Duty, Student Council ad- visor, attended the District Convention at Macomb. This year the council initiated a Student Council Week, the purposes of which were to help boost school spirit and to get the students interested in the work of their governing body. Vice-President Danny Janecke and President Marilyn Zwicker are collect- ing money for the March of Dimes.
