This great mass of granite and lava from a long extinct volcano seemed to take the shape of a young man and young lady, striding hand in hand toward the distant horizon. These imaginary characters appeared to be draped in long dark robes and flat-brimmed caps with a tassel hanging from each of them. As we stood on the bank of the river, gazing in wonder at this great mountain, we realized that this was to be our goal on this venture into the wilderness. After building a large raft from bamboo stalks and vines, we crossed the mighty stream. As soon as we set foot on the far bank, we were confronted with what we thought were members of the fierce headhunting tribe of that region. However, they turned out to be semi-bloodthirsty hunters of the Senior tribe. They seemed to have great fun in their ceremonial initiation party ; however, we didn't find it quite as amusing as they appeared to. We decided it would be wise to keep a touch of democracy in our encampment, so we held an election. We voted Mike Dawson in as our Chief Bwana (President), Judy Milks as Head Guide (Vice-President), and Eileen Frank as Interpreter (Sec- retary-Treasurer). We realized, however, that these officers would have to be changed at regular intervals. We all agreed that an election every year would be most desirable. We elected two of our members as delegates to the Peace Council (Student Council) formed by the neighboring tribes. They were Sheila Anderson and Fred Juras. The natives of the nearby village began to prepare for the annual celebration (homecoming in our country) which was held over a period of a week and ended in an athletic contest between them and a rival tribe. We selected Eileen Frank and Mike Dawson to represent us at the big ceremonial dance. After many exciting times and a few harrowing experiences, another year came around and along with it election time. This year our Peace Council delegates were Letitia Klingebiel and Leonard Chard. Dennis Frye was chosen to be our Chief Bwana. He was joined by Denny Dochterman as the Head Guide. We wanted to distribute the duties a little bit more this year so we separated the position of Interpreter into two offices. Jennie Lou Sims was chosen as Interpreter (Secretary) along with Eileen Frank, who occupied the new post of Lead Porter (Treasurer). Again this year the big celebration came along, and Judy Simmon and Jack Spengler were chosen to represent our organi- zation. The natives of the area were especially friendly this year because they had obtained another victory in the annual athletic contest. The end of the second year and the midpoint of our adventure was beginning to come into view. The huge mountain became more than just a dream as it appeared to be almost within the grasp of our small group trying so diligently to reach it. The third year was a good year for our safari. We thought the wisest choice for Chief Bwana that we could make would be Mary Carlson. She was helped along the way by our Head Guide, Jim McManus. Also adding to our success was Eileen Frank, the Interpreter this year, and Norm Hultgren, the new Lead Porter. This fine staff of leaders was a valuable asset to our most prosperous year. Linda Holland and Mike Pearson were the delegates to this year's Peace Council, and Mike Dawson was elected to fill the post of Vice-President. This year our representatives to the native celebration were Eileen Frank and Denny Dochterman. The natives were getting friendlier and friendlier because the area natives were victorious again this year. Our raft was chosen for the most decorative theme in the jungle. We had to entertain the most PROMinent tribe in the region this year so we decided tohave a Tropicana dance for them. It was a tremendous success and everyone seemed to have a good time. Now we began the fourth and final year of our expedition. It was to be the most important year of our lives. Since it was so important we wanted very good officers to lead us. Our choice for Chief Bwana was Mike Pearson. The Head Guide was Fred Juras. The Interpreter this year was Jeanie Docherty, and Richard Jinks was the new Lead Porter. Mike Dawson, last year's Vice-President to the Peace Council, was promoted to President. Margaret Lindburg and Leonard Chard were also chosen to represent our organization. Since our organization was the most prominent and best organized in the territory, the entire population of the area decided that we should choose a king and queen from our membership. We picked the annual celebration and dance as the appropriate time for the coronation. Jeanie Docherty and Denny Dochterman were chosen to be attendants to Dave Slavish and Linda Holland, our first king and queen. This year our decorated raft received a fairly good third place. It was our turn to be the most PROMinent tribe in the region and the peasants honored us with a dance. Then to top off the weekend our whole group took a trip to the river town of Chicago. No one really got into a lot of trouble so it was well worth while. As the sun sank slowly in the North (our compass was broken), we finally arrived at our destination. The huge mountain was now a reality, and we all faced it with our eyes wide open, for we realized that this was to be the most important turning point of our lives. (Mary Carlson). Freddie Cooper, the famous child movie star, and his body guard, Tugger McCoy, come to Overland College. Fred- die, to put it gently, is a heel. Instead of becoming the most popular boy in col- lege--a position promised by his charm and wealth—he becomes the most disliked. When he causes Kit, who is working his way through college, to lose his scholarship, the boys set out to kidnap Freddie. Dean Valentine, head of the college, and a widower with one son, is besmitten with Mrs. Hall, the house mother of Clover Cottage. She has a daughter. The two children are mortal enemies; and when they hear that their parents are engaged, they plan a kidnaping to hinder the mar- riage. These two enterprises become un- believably entangled. In the end, Freddie comes through by proving himself a man and by winning the respect of the college. 88 Mike Pearson, Stage Manager; Jerry Johansen, Publicity; Marilyn Mehall, Mistress of Make-up; Leonard Chard, Props; Mr. Kenney, Director; (absent) Richard Johnston, Assistant Stage Manager. The Importance of Being Young” Tugger McCoy (Mike Dawson) leaves with Emily Grew (Sheila Anderson). Comic (Jim McManus) and Debbie (Margaret Lindburg) show that they are mortal enemies. The three co-eds in the play were Midge (Eileen Frank), Emily (Sheila Anderson), and Cora (Jeanie Docherty). The Dramatic Club was started this year by Mr. John Kenney, In order to be a member of the club, a person must have been in one of the school plays or must have helped put on the play in some way. The Dramatic Club was started to increase interest in dramatics and to help earn money for equipment needed for the production of the plays. DRAMATIC CLUB OFFICERS: Joyce Hughes, Secretary; Jerry Johansen, Business Manager; Mike Pearson, President; Mr. Kenney, Advisor; Leonard Chard, Vice President. Stranger in Town” Was the Object of Hugo Bosworth (Don Plank) informs George (Dennis Mueller) that he is to become manager of the store. Of course you're going to accept George's proposal, says Rose (Mary Carlson) to her daughter (Joyce Hughes.) Well you are. Marge, aren't you? Many Hours of Work and Days of Rehearsing Well, I'm going in and have some breakfast--I'm starved, says Marge (Joyce Hughes). You oughtta hear the whopper Tillie just told. Jeannie (Sheila Anderson) giggles. It’s one o' the best pieces of lit-er-choor I ever read-- seven murders already and I ain't even half through the book yet, says Tillie (Jennie Sims). Ed (Ray Barnum) relaxes after a hard day of managing the store. I'll give you till Monday to get the dough for me. And that's the last break you'll get from me. Sam (Mike Dawson) threatens George. Your little dream of love in a cottage is very touching, but I'm afraid completely impractical, Dolores (Mary Pitman) informs Larry (Tom Slavish). 94 Uh-huh, of course I dig you, Elvira. It’s cool as Dixie and twice as bug house! Jeannie exclaims while Rose (Mary Carlson) looks on disapprovingly. Ed Fanning is a moderately prosperous store-m anager for a nation-wide chain. His family consists of his devoted wife, Rose; his teenage daughter, Jeannie, who is afflicted with telephonitis ; and the elder daughter, Marge, who is almost engaged to George Crossley, the assistant manager at Ed's store. Ed brings into his home as a boarder Larry Brown, who has been sent from the New York office of Ed's chain to learn the business. At least that is his story; but it soon becomes obvious that Lar- ry is something more than a penniless young man just getting started in life. He sports an expensive wardrobe, is a graduate of Groton and Harvard, and is a former mem- ber of the Cafe Society set. What is Larry's true identity? The mystery isn't solved un- til a series of exciting scenes culminates in the final electrifying climax. Having done it three times before, I had no problem. On the way to school, I wasn’t very enthusiastic about returning; but the minute I entered the shining halls and saw the smiling faces of all my friends, I realized how nice it was to get back. This was the first whole day and boy did it go fast! I only hope the rest go just as fast. The freshmen claimed we had a nasty look in our eyes as we made plans for their initiation. Tonight our class had the honor of welcoming the Freshmen to Sherrard High. I wonder how the dog biscuits and red peppers tasted? SEPTEMBER Football cheerleader tryouts were held today. WOW! You girls sure look sharp! Marching band starts practice today--lift those legs and point those toes, kids. A watermelon party was held tonight to welcome all new students and especially Linda, our first foreign exchange student at Sherrard. The Student Council met to discuss plans for homecoming. Friday the thirteenth turned out to be a lucky day for the Tigers. We beat Abingdon 27-25. Let's keep it up fellas. Jr. Varsity started the season out right by beating Alexis. The F. H. A. Hootenanny was a real success, too. Today was officially marked dress-up day. Everyone looked his best. Tonight was our first conference game. Our boys just couldn't seem to pull up that score as Westmer topped us 25-7. Alene was certainly a good hostess at the first meeting of the F. T. A. The future teachers had a great time at the weiner roast. The Vikings beat the Tigers 14-7 at the football game tonight. Get out the hammers and thumb protectors. It's time to start the homecoming floats. OCTOBER Senior pictures were taken today. (What a handsome class!) All Seniors agreed that this was the best snake dance ever held. Dave and Linda were especially happy tonight. Congratulations King and Queen! We were dismissed early for the parade. The floats looked beautiful. Our queen had a hard time deciding whether to lead the band or ride in her royal car. Tonight's game was a heartbreaker. The Aces won 27-14. It was an exciting but disheartening game at Winola. We lost 13-12. There was no school today. Our teachers needed a rest so they went to institute. Seniors start their magazine campaign today--Juras's Jets versus Tindall's Toilers. The Student Council met today and praised themselves for a wonderful homecoming. Dad's Night—Rockridge showed no sympathy and handed us our fifth consecutive loss, 33-18. Besides all the delicious food, we enjoyed A Day in Yellowstone Park at the Mother-Daughter Banquet tonight. Don't give up yet boys. Atkinson beat us tonight 27-6, but there’s still one more game left. NOVEMBER We lost to the Chargers 20-13 tonight. At least we can look forward to basketball season. Our Tigers started practicing for the oncoming season. Good luck, boys! Basketball cheerleader tryouts were held today. May the best girls win. Veterans' Day--I'm always willing to have a vacation from school. Today marks the start of American Education Week, and I start a very short career as a teacher. I hope the stu- dents do a lot of co-operating. Tonight is dress rehearsal for the Senior play. I don't know who's more nervous, Mr. Kenny or the cast. At last, it’s all over. Everyone said Stranger in Town was a great success. At 1:30 this afternoon the students and teachers of Sherrard High School heard of the assassination of President Kennedy with shock and disbelief. We extend our deepest sympathy to his family and our prayers to President Johnson as he assumes his duties as leader of our country. Tonight was our second straight win as we beat Alexis 54-45. The Tigers are looking forward to a GR-R-R-EAT season. School is out for Thanksgiving vacation. (Thank heaven for the Pilgrims!) 108 TUES. 3: FRL 6: TUES. 10: THUR. 12: FRI. 13: SUN. 15: WED. 18: FRI. 20: WED. 25: THUR. 2: FRI. 3: TUES. 7: THUR. 9: FRI. 10: SAT. 11: TUES. 14: FRI. 17: TUES. 21: WED. 22: FRI. 24: FRI. 31: TUES. 4: THUR. 6: FRI. 7: TUES. 11: WED. 12: THUR'. 13: FRI. 14: TUES. 18: WED. 19: FRI. 21: TUES. 25: FRI. 28: TUES. 3: THUR. 5: FRI. 6: WED. 11: DECEMBER The Betty Crocker Test was today. I never knew being a homemaker could be so tough. Sherrard has a great team! Our Tigers outscored Atkinson's Tigers 56-39. Another basketball game--another victory. Tonight the Alwood Aces fell to Sherrard 53-43. The Student Council met to make plans for the annual Christmas Party. Friday the thirteenth must have put a hex on the Chargers. We beat them 52-42. The chorus gave a lovely Christmas concert tonight. Sherrard High has such talented students. Our mighty Senior class had a meeting and decided to sell toothbrushes. At least everyone in Unit 200 will have clean teeth. Santa paid a visit to our annual Christmas Party. (Did anyone guess his identity?) MERRY CHRISTMAS from the Ivy Tower staff! JANUARY Everyone has that sleepy look about them. There’s still something big to look forward to--SEMESTER EXAMS! The Tigers were hosts for the game tonight. The Jets were defeated 56-36. We again downed Winola 62-48 in the first night of the Cornbelt Tournament. Tonight we advanced to the finals of the Cornbelt Tournament by beating Alwood 60-53. That coveted Ear of Com is just one game away. Juniors and Seniors took survey tests today. At least we got out of regular classes. Sherrard Tigers are champions once again! It was a hard battle but the Tigers came out on top 56-53. Congrat- ulations team and, of course, Coach Jackson. Sherrard climbed to the top of the conference tonight by beating Rockridge 60-55 in a thrilling overtime. Hooray! Semester tests are finally over. Tonight our powerful Tigers rolled over Cambridge 73-62. Tonight the Warriors fell to Sherrard 62-54. It seems a rat joined the fourth hour girls' P. E. class, but our brave Ag. boys saved the day. The new addition was at last opened for our inspection. Students and teachers were all grateful for the additional space and attractive classrooms. Thanks to everyone who helped make this possible. Victory strikes again--Alwood was defeated 54-52. This was a black night in SHS history. Orion handed us our first defeat, 61-52. FEBRUARY Our Tigers began another winning streak tonight by downing Atkinson 62-54. Today Mrs. Lauber of the East Moline State Hospital Staff spoke to the F. H. A. girls on mental health. I'm sure all the Future Homemakers now have a better understanding of this subject. Another victory came our way as Sherrard beat Winola 64-47. Cheryl and Denny reigned over our Sweetheart Swirl tonight. The music was great, and the gym was decorated beautifully. How we all love Abe Lincoln, because we get out of school to celebrate his birthday. This was an exciting day for the Juniors! They chose their class rings at last. Our Tigers drove past Cambridge tonight, beating the Vikings 69-55. Our hopes for first place were dimmed tonight as Rockridge passed us up 80-68. Daddy Date Night proved to the F. H. A. girls that dads really can be fun. Our Tigers were doubly happy tonight as we captured both the conference title and also the Ear of Com by beating Westmer 68-44. It was an exciting game, but Lady Luck didn't seem to be on our side. Knoxville beat us 67-66. Tonight our mighty Tigers downed Rova 57-44. MARCH Once again the Sherrard Tigers downed the Rova Tigers by beating them 47-42 in our first game of the Regional Tournament. A late snowstorm kept us out of school today, but we were all in fine spirits for the game tonight. Our powerful Tigers soared over Aledo 70-57. Even though Galva beat us, we are still mighty proud of our Tigers for capturing second place in the Regional Tournament. The Sectional Basketball Tournament will be played this week. 109 TUES. THUR. TUES. WED. FRI. FRI. THUR. FRI. FRI. MON. FRI. FRI. SAT. MON. MON. SUN. MON. TUES. 17: The first rounds of State Basketball Tournament start today. I'm sure you’ll get there some year, boys. 19: Tonight our chorus presented their annual spring concert. It was wonderful as usual. 24: As we were being fitted for caps and gowns today, our mighty Senior class was reminded that the big day is not far off. 25: The F.F. A. boys and their dads attended the Father-Son Banquet tonight. Was the food good, boys? 27: Easter vacation begins today. There will be no school for five days but plenty of homework. APRIL 10: Today ends the fifth six weeks of school. I don't know whether to cry or jump for joy. 16: Tension is beginning to show on the Juniors. Dress rehearsal for their play takes place tonight. 17: Congratulations on a job well done, Juniors! Bringing Up Mother was enjoyed by all. 24: The band students were given a chance to show off as they presented their spring concert tonight. 20: The F. H. A. girls gave a preview of the newest spring fashions. Next year’s officers were also installed tonight. MAY 1: The track team went to Cambridge today. We've got a first rate team as usual. 8: Tonight was a magic evening for the Juniors and Seniors. The gym couldn't have been more beautiful. It was a night no one will ever forget. Thank you. Juniors. 9: Our sleepy but very excited Senior class boarded the bus for Chicago this morning at an early hour. After four years of working and waiting, we're finally on our way. 11: School was probably rather dull without the mighty Seniors today. Don’t worry, teachers, your favorite students will be back tomorrow. 18: Groan--Semester tests will be given this week. Do you really think we'll miss these tests, Seniors? 24: Baccalaureate ceremonies were held tonight. 25: Annuals are being passed around to be autographed today. I think everyone will agree that this year’s Ivy Tower was the best ever. Tonight the Class of 64 graduated and is no longer a part of Sherrard High; but the Class of 64 was, and always will be, a great class. 26: Well, we finally made it. This is the very last day of school. Written by 110 Junior High Activities EIGHTH GRADE CHEERLEADERS: Shirley Mack, Cindy Sharer, Carol Ash.
