Tension mounts as graduation draws near, but the countdo wn for this momentous flight began four years ago. Then we were lowly freshmen, awed by the strangeness and size of Sherrard High School. Little did we realize then 'that this was the beginning of the countdown which would, four years later, launch us on our chosen careers. Our introduction to high school was a terrifying initiation. The long underwear and overalls which the girls wore got rather hot before the day was over. We were all relieved to get out of our hot clothes, remove the make-up and smelly stuff from our faces, and put on our party clothes. The party which the seniors gave us was a welcome relief after that long and frightening day. The first great decision we made was electing our freshman class officers. We elected Terry Dawson as president and Larry Cederstrom as vice-president. Charlene Kness served as secretary-treasurer. and Eileen Davis and Hank Dryoel represented us on the Student Council. They all helped to lead us on the first vital step of our countdown. A memorable highlight of that year was Homecoming. We worked hard on our float, 'Strike Up a Victory, and were very proud when the judges handed us first prize. We decided .then that we were going to win the prize every year. For our first time in the Homecoming Court, we elected Marsha Vogler and Ken Schwarz as our attendants. We had many new experiences that year. We were given new responsibilities and learned to make our own deci- sions. This knowledge gave us a firm and steady foundation on which to base ourselves for our next great step, our sophomore year. This year our arrival at Sherrard was not so frightening. We were no longer poor lowly freshman but 'sophisticat- ed' sophomores. Instead of cringing whenever we saw a senior, we went about eagerly renewing old acquaintances and making new friends. Initiation was much more enjoyable now that we could just watch instead of participate. For our officers this year we elected Ken Schwarz as president and Betty Hauger as vice-president. Judy Zwicker served as secretary, and Carita Rhodenbaugh was our treasurer. To help govern the school, we chose Marsha Vogler and Keith Docherty as Student Council representatives. Homecoming this year wasn't quite as lucky for us as last year. The parade was rained on, and our float, Happy Victory to You, seemed to fare worse than the others. The colors on our cake all ran together and rather ruined the effect. This time we had to be content with Honorable Mention. The rain made the football game rather soggy, too. We all dried out for the dance, though, and enjoyed our- selves. We were very proud of our attendants. Kathleen Slavish and Jim Dorr. The second sem ester saw a hard-fought election campaign. We were to elect one of our members to serve as Student Coun c il vice-president his junior year and president his senior year. To obtain this position meant both a great honor and much hard work. When the campaign ended, we elected Keith Docherty and all were satisfied with the choice. We made another great advancement this year. As our work became harder, we learned to study and regulate our time. We also learned to work together as a class. These accomplishments helped us greatly in the final two steps of our countdown. Upon our return -to school in our junior year, we began the final and more exciting half of our project. We were now upperclassmen with the problems and responsibilities which we had formerly left to others. It was more impor- tant to elect competent people as our officers, for this was the year we must raise most of the money for our senior trip. We were to be in charge of the concession stand and sponsor the Junior- Senior Prom. For the important job of officers we elected Jim Dorr as president, Carolyn Ritchie as vice-president, Bonnie Tat- man as secretary, and Mickey Turner as treasurer. Charlene Kness and Ken Schwarz were our representatives on the Student Council. There was much work for all these people to do, and they handled their job well. The weather was better than last yearg and our float, Iron Out Westmer, brought us second prize. Mickey Tur- ner and Ken Adams were our junior attendants to the king and queen. This year we had our first try at dramatics. Our play, The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis. was coached by Miss Judith Robbins. The only mishap during the performance was when a little dog got loose on stage. The incident was covered well, however, and the play was a big success. The highlight of the second semester was the Prom. Much work and planning went into the preparation, but we all felt it was worth it. Our 'Evening in Paris was enjoyed by everyone. This year marked the end of the preliminary steps of our countdown. We had learned much and come far, but we all realized how much farther we must go. We had only one more year to prepare us for the final launching. Upon our return to Sherrard this year, we were big seniors. We must now be the leaders in social and demo- cratic life of the school. This was the year to work the hardest and have the most fun, for this was the year we would remember most when we thought of our careers at Sherrard High School. The last set of class officers we would elect were: Marlan Sharer, president: Ken Adams, vice-president: ,Judy Farwell, secretary, and Ken Unger, treasurer. Marsha Vogler and Larry Johnson were representatives on the Student Council and Keith Docherty was the president. This was to be our last Homecoming as students, and it made us think of next year when we would be part of the alumni. This year the king and queen from our class were Charlene Kness and John Laughlin. Senior attendants were Judy Zwicker and Larry Cederstrom. After some rapid, last-minute changing, our float, Spouting to Victory, won the second prize. Much work and study went into our play, Mrs, McThing, directed by Mrs. Thomas Hogue. We were all very proud of our successful play and wished that it could have run more than two nights. This year we were the honored guests at the Prom given by the juniors. We will always remember our last high school Prom and appreciate the work which went into it. When we returned from our long-awaited senior trip, the excitement began to mount considerably. Only a few days remained between us and graduation. The moment of the eventful launching was drawing near. We all hated to say good-bye to our many friends at Sherrard, but this was the moment for which we had worked and planned four years. Graduation would now launch each of us on our chosen careers. The l96I-'62 Calendar AUGUST The Freshman and Juniors braved the hot weather to be the first back to school. Today the Sophomores and Seniors managed to give up their vacations to head back to school. We all got back into the swing of things today as it was the first full day of our new school year. SEPTEMBER Class officers were introduced today at our first class meetings, and they informed the class members of what was expected of them. Q Majorette and head majorette try-outs were held today. We're all looking forward to their fine twirling at football games. Cheerleading try-outs were held today, and everyone found it very hard to choose eight girls from among the many who tried out. A mouse, mysteriously appearing in first hour study hall, came to a violent death this morning. Everyone except the Seniors were licking their lips, saying one, and smiling prettily for their pictures. Tonight the Freshmen were initiated by the Almighty Seniors. The fifth hour typing class did an A number one job of jamming typewriters today. The speech classes were overjoyed today as their speech books finally arrived. The lights were out in the halls this noon causing quite a confusion! At the first F. H. A, meeting of the year, it was decided to sell mums for Homecoming. Tonight was our first conference game with Westmer. They beat us by only two points so don't feel bad fellas, we'll do better next time! Our school luck doesn't seem to be holding out. The Jr. Varsity lost their game. Keep your chin up, boys, we're for you all the way! Short school days are always fun, and we received our first one today because of a faculty meeting. Our prediction came true! Alwood was defeated by our fine varsity team, 28-12. The Seniors looked picture perfect today as they posed for their graduation pictures. The F. H. A. rally was held this afternoon at Moline High School, and Mary Ann Lindburg was chosen asnpresident. Congratulations, Mary Ann! Today the remaining Seniors had their pictures taken. Six members of the annual staff accompanied Mrs. Winters to an annual meeting at Augustana. Our boys lost to Monmouth tonight, but they really showed them what a small school can do. OCTOBER Tonight was the night to start work on class floats for Homecoming. The Jr. Varsity worked hard, too, and beat Westmer, 25-12. Today the newspaper took pictures of our king and queen candidates and our cheerleaders. The Seniors finally de- cided on a theme for their float, but it seems they had a little trouble with the lights in Mr. Upton's garage. Our traditional bonfire and snake dance were both a great success. We all hope Mrs. Unger enjoyed her unan- nounced company! Congratulations were handed out to Charlene and John as they were crowned 1961 Homecoming Queen and King. I Did you notice how sleepy everyone looks today? ' We're waking up today to start studying for six weeks tests. Today was Teacher's Institute so we were given the day off. Tonight we sailed to an easy victory over Winola, 43-0. Our band marched for Western's Homecoming. ' Today the Seniors started to work on their magazine sales campaign. Wonder who 'll end up giving the pizza party! The Juniors were all set to order class rings, but wouldn't you know, nobody came to take orders! No matter what happened to everyone during the week, we were all rewarded when our Tigers beat Orion, 19-6. We certainly paid for our victory over Orion. Four of our best players were hurt, and a couple of them arrived' at school on crutches. At last the Juniors got to order their class rings! Today could be called National Beatnik Day' as several boys showed up in blue jeans and sweatshirts! We saw quite a change today as a couple of our beatniks showed up in suits. We gained an hour of shut eye today because we are back on Standard Time. We are welcoming back Betty Jane Hamerlinck who has been attending school in Colorado. We're glad to see you back, Betty! The F. T. A. Divi- sion Meeting was held at Sherrard tonight, and congratulationstgo to Carolyn Ritchie who was elected secretary of Blackhawk Division. X What trick or treater spent part of today washing the high school windows? NOVEMBER Many students attended College Night at Aledo High School. Although we lost first place to Rockridge tonight by a score of 20-13. we're proud of the fine season our boys hat and congratulate them for it. We're also very proud of our Jr. Varsity as they finished as champions of the Cornbel' Conference. Many Seniors made it to Rock Island today to take ACT tests. Today marked the beginning of American Education Week. The Pep Club met today to plan for the arrival of basketball season. It was decided to order purple and gold pom- poms for the club. The parents made their yearly visit to school as open house was held. The coaches were in Champaign today, and none of their classes were held. The extra free period was much en- joyed by their students. Three talented senior boys, Keith Docherty, Larry Hoffman, and Bob links, made their television debut on the Aunl Polly Show today to promote the Senior play, Mrs. McThing. A large crowd assembled to enjoy the first night of the Senior play, Mrs. McThing, and it looked as though it wa. a real success. The second night of the Senior play was an even bigger success. Hats off to the Seniors and Mrs. Hogue. who made t-he success possible. Also. thanks to Mr. and Mrs. Pankey for the play party they gave the Seniors for their fine production. Everyone enjoyed the short day. It gave us extra time to study for six week's tests. After a long day of tests. we can use the extra few days of rest--Thanksgiving vacation. The Pep Club's pom- poms arrived in time to shake Sherrard to a 47-36 victory over Alexis. That's starting the sea- son off on the right foot! DECEMBER Everyone was proud of our Tigers tonight as they beat Aledo, 46-41. Tonight we clashed with Cambridge and beat them, 47-35. We met with some bad luck tonight. After a hard-fought game. Rockridge handed us ourfirst loss of the season, 39-30, but we'l1 get even next time! After creeping to Orion on the ice-covered roads, we speeded up to win over the Chargers, 70-35. To help get everyone into the Christmas spirit, the chorus held its annual Christmas Concert. Tonight we traveled to Rockridge and returned the favor by beating them, 49-44, to put us back in the top spot. Atkinson bowed to us tonight by a score of 46-45. It was almost too close for comfort. Before dismissing for Christmas vacation, we were treated with a Christmas party in the gym. Everyone enjoyed the fine entertainment provided by the band. From the sound of Santa's voice, he must have come to us by way of the South Pole instead of the North! At 3:00 everyone was dismissed for the holidays and a long awaited vacation. While everyone else was relaxing, our Jr. Varsity team was fighting hard to win first place in the Alexis Tourney by defeating Rockridge in the championship game. I ANUARY lt was back to school today. Upon arriving, we found we had a new addition tof our school. Thanks to the science club for the new water cooler. The F. H. A. officers met today to plan for the Annual F. H. A. -F. F. A. Sweetheart Dance. While the snow drifted on the roads, our boys drifted to a 42-38 victory over Alwood. Drifting snow meant an early dismissal today. Just as everyone expected, there was no school! That didn't hold back the team, though, as they beat Winola il the first round of the Cornbelt Tourney at Alwood. We received another day of rest! After that unexpected vacation, we were back to work again. In second round tourney play, we beat Alwood. whicl means that we'1l play Westmer for the championship Saturday night. Just as everyone had hoped, we beat Westmer to win the Cornbelt Tournament for three consecutive years. Those three trophies will be proud additions to our trophy case. Our Varsity racked up another victory tonight by beating Westmer again, 51-46. Our Jr. Varsity set a new record by pouring in 94 points. Everyone agreed that the semester went too fast, and no one was ready for semester tests. After another long day of tests, we defeated Winola, 50-28. The Juniors finally received their class rings. Atkinson traveled hex e tonight only to be beaten, 46-37. We were quite a disappointed group tonight as we' were beaten by Cambridge, 53-44. FEBRUARY We opened the month without a bang as Aledo defeated us, 51-44, in the Aledo Invitational Tourney. Tonight turned a little better when we beat R. M. A. , 57-25, at the Aledo Tourney. We met with Westmer again tonight and won third place in the Aledo Tourney by beating them, 52-45. Tonight's game with Orion was a little different than the last, but we still managed to beat them, 53-37. Thanks to Abraham Lincoln, we received another vacation. Tonight's game with Westmer proved to be the most exciting game of the season. We beat them, 46-42, in an over- time after following behind until the fourth quarter. - We all listened to WHBF for the reports of closed schools, but everyone met with disappointment because Sherrard wasn't included in the list. In our last conference game of the season, we beat Winola, 78-62, to become Champions of the Cornbelt Conference! Isn 't it a shame to miss another day of school? The Winola band proved to be good sports by putting on an assembly for us even though we defeated them Tuesday night. Teacher's Institute today made this a three day week. Tonight we met with some bad luck as we were beaten by Monmouth. He soon finds that this active imagina- tion gets him into a lot of trouble. Dobie worships a beautiful girl named Helen who is just using him, but finally he realizes that the girl for him is faith- ful Bonnie who has helped him get out of all his trouble. Linda Adams played the part of Mimi, Diane De- Greve the part of Mrs. Larue, and Mike Kale the part of Howay. Connie Parchert, Pat Hintermeister, and Eileen Milks played the part of the three Lewis sisters. The three gangsters were played by Keith Docherty, Bob J inks , and Larry Hoffman. 86 The Senior Play Marsha Vogler practices her part of Mrs. Schellenback. John Wilson and Bill Reedy played the part of police- men. Wayne Shirley, who was absent for the picture, also played the part of a policeman. CREW HEADS--FIRST ROW: Toni Hutchins, Joyce Swiger , Marlan Sharer, Linda Holtz, Judy Farwell. SECOND ROW: Ken Unger, lim Dorr, Larry Johnson, Ken Schwarz, and Leland Martin. Mrs. McThing, a two act comedy-fantasy, was the whimsical story of a poor little rich boy overly sheltered by his mother. Howay, the little boy, is stolen from his mother by a vindictive witch because Mrs. Larue will not let Mimi, Mrs. McThing's adopted human child, play with her boy. Since the witch has left a stick in Howay 's place, he is not missed, and that's where the fun begins. Three would-be gangsters who have never pulled a job hang out in back of the Shantyland Pool Hall Lunchroom with a delightful assortment of odd characters, and it is here that Howay finally finds himself stranded. He is first put to work as a dishwasher, but he finally joins the mob when he feels that all attempts to reach his mother have failed. Meanwhile, Mrs. Larue has begun to look for Howay and finally finds him in Shantyland. But Mimi has found him too: so once again Mrs. Larue orders the little girl to stay away from Howay. Warned by Mimi that she has no more chances, Mrs. Larue attempts to call Larue Towers only to discover that Mrs. McThing, still one step ahead of her, has put a stick in her place, too! Finding herself a dishwasher in probably the gaudiest poolhall in town, Mrs. Larue seeks help from three wacky old-maid sisters, one of whom is a kleptomaniac. When the Lewis girls fail, she vows revenge on the sisters, but despairs of ever re- turning home. Finally, however, the gangsters dec i d e to break in Larue Towers. They acquire the assistance of Mimi, who promises to betray her witch-mother by destroying the stick-people. After a wild and confusing scene, involving some puzzled policemen and servants, three frightened Lewis girls being matched with three greedy gangsters, and the removal of silver from Larue Towers, order is restored. The remaining problem of Mimi is solved only after a double visitation of Mrs. McThing, once in the guise of an ugly green-nosed monster, and once as a fairy godmother. Since the witch has helped Mrs. Larue see the light, Mimi is al- lowed to stay to play with Howay, and the curtain closes as the two are joyfully playing with a toy train. 87 Jr. High Class Officers MRS.
