Grandma Reminices It was a pleasant summer evening in the year 2010. The Williams family was ready for a quiet evening of relaxation, as the family was on its vacation. I'm certainly glad we decided to go to Venus this year, ” Grandpa Williams said. I was tired of going to Jupiter every vacation. I like this resort too, Grandma Williams chimed in. That one on Jupiter was sort of dilapidated. They built it in 1985 ! Grandma and Grandpa were interrupted by their three grandchildren, who came running into the room. Grandma, one of the little boys cried, Tell us what it was like when you went to school. Why, children, don’t you want to play your usual night-time games such as Captain Saturn? Grandma exclaimed. It isn't like you children to want to do a thing like that. It would mean that you would have to be quiet for awhile! Well, Grandma, the oldest child confided, I’ll tell you why we want to hear what it was like when you went to school. You see, we were just talking to Mother, and she said you graduated in the year 1961. Gee, but that was a long time ago. We thought you'd maybe have known Sir Lancelot, George Washington, or Marie Antoinette! Children, Grandma laughed, 1961 wasn't that long ago. But I suppose I can see your point. No, I didn't know George Washington. But I did have a fine time at school.” The old lady went to the book shelf and returned with several volumes. These are my old high school annuals. They tell all about my school days. Seeing that she had ar. attentive audience, Grandma opened the first volume and began. My classmates and I started high school in September, 1957. We were really scared the first day. de- spite the fact that we had attended junior high school at Sherrard. But, in spite of our fears, we realized that we were a class. We got on our feet by electing officers. The old lady leafed through the annual, finally stopping at a page filled with pictures. Here are our freshman officers. Bob Douglass was our Pres- ident, and Shirley Miller was the vice-president. We chose Elaine Johnson as our secretary, and Garry Clarke was elected treasurer. For our representatives on the student council we chose Carla Schutteand Du- ane Dawson. Just a few days after be began our high school career came initiation. I remember how I dreaded it! Grandma gave a little laugh. But it really turned out to be a lot of fun. Why, the seniors even gave us a party. Leafing through the pages of the annual. Grandma came to the homecoming section. Our first Home- coming wasn't too successful, she remembered. Many students were sick with Asian flu. But despite this, we took part in the festivities. Shirley Miller and Larry Jones were our freshman attendants. Searching her memory, Grandma continued. I don't seem to remember too much about the rest of my freshman year, but I know that our' Freshman Night was very successful. Closing the annual. Grandma reached for another volume which was a light pink. Here is the annual from my sophomore year. When my classmates and I came back to Sherrard High School, we felt a little different than we had one short year before. We were not freshmen any more. We had risen to the impres- sive position of sophomores. We chose the following officers at our first class meeting: Elaine Johnson, pres- ident; Chuck Kilcoin, vice-president; Virgil Kain, secretary; Bob Douglass, treasurer. Larry Jones and Rose Mary Klingebiel were elected to the student council.
