Music Makes the Heart to Sing Marching at the Homecoming Parade The year 1959-1960 was a very good year for the band. The band started out by leading the Homecoming Parade with the march music it is so well noted for, and later that night the ban j presented a musical-marching show at the half of our football game. Besides playing for the pep meetings this year, the band also sponsored a tra- veling pep band that went along with the pep club to all football games away from home. During the basketball season, it provided enter- tainment at the games. On February 26, ten ensembles and solos went to East Moline to par- ticipate in the district music contest. Two of these entries went on to the state contest at Normal. The band as a whole entered the dis- trict contest on April 2. On May 4, many people heard our spring concert. To conclude a successful year, the band provided the music for commencement exercises in May. SHERRARD HIGH SCHOOL PEP BAND The picture to the right shows Mrs. King, our chorus director, and her two accompanists Rose Mary Klingebiel and Garry Clarke. The chorus provided many hours of happy listening for our school this year. At open house, a group of boys called the Tuesday Tunesters” sang. At Christmas time, a concert of holiday music was presented which included several special numbers. As soon as Christmas was over, Mrs. King began to get ready for the spring concert and festival. On March 22, the concert was given, and on May 10, the chorus participated in theCombelt Music Festival. Besides concerts, there have been many special groups selected from the chorus members who sang at various functions. The chorus finished their musical year by having a special ensemble sing at Baccalaureate.
