. THE IVY TOWER Sherrard High School Sherrard, Illinois Volume XXVI I960 DEDICATION The 1960 Ivy Tower Staff proudly dedicates the yearbook to Miss Joyce Lebermann, the yearbook advisor. Miss Lebermann came to Sherrard High in the fall of 1955. She teaches the vocational subjects--shorthand, typing, and book- keeping. It makes no difference how big or how small a problem anyone has, Miss Lebermann is always there with a smile and a helping hand. She devotes hours and hours of her time with the annual staff each year to see that a bigger and better yearbook is produced. Thank you, Miss Lebermann, for all the hard work, for all the patient understanding, and for the sweet disposition you have dis- played while working with us. SCHOOL LIFE SCHOOL DAYS 26: 27: 28: 29: 4: 7: 10: 15: 17: 18: 22: 24: 25: 28: 2: 3: 5: 5-8: 9: 10: 12: 13: 14: 15: 16: 19: 20: 19-23: 21: 22: 23: 24: AUGUST 26: Today Sherrard High School was opened for the 1959-60 term. Some Freshmen and Juniors greeted it with smiles; but for the most part, the school was greeted with: Why does there have to be school? Golly, summer just started! Can you imagine studying again? and so on. The seniors arrived today to take their post as Almighty Seniors, 27: and the Sophomores came with them. School has really begun in earnest now. We met all the new teachers. After receiving assignments, we realized it was time to buckle down. 28: To beat the heat, classes were shortened and school was dismissed 29: at 1:00. SEPTEMBER 30: This was an all important day in the life of the freshmen. They were initiated into Sherrard High. We had a lot of fun, but oh, that smell! 31: Our first holiday. Labor Day, came today. Cheerleading try-outs were held this afternoon--it sure was hard to choose only eight with all those legs!! 2: All the High School students were instructed on how to drive pro- perly at the Safety Driving Show. Nancy, Troy, Miss Lebermann, and Mr. Upton were the guinea pigs. 6: What did you forget in P.E., Ruth H.? The State Inspectors spent the day with us looking over the school. 8-14: Hope they like it as much as we all do! !! That night, we won our first football game with R. M.A. 14-6. We celebrated at the 11: Soc-Hop sponsored by the sophomores. 16-20: Who let the mouse loose in 8th hour study hall? Today, a test fire drill turned out to be real. A fire broke out in the Home Economics room. Most of us were shot by Paul today--smile pretty! The smiles 23: soon wore off, though, because we lost our game with Alwood, 14-6. After the game, the coaches took Dean D. to the hospital and then Larry C. at 1:00 am with an appendicitis attack. 26: Chemistry students had long, sad faces as their chemistry text- books finally arrived. 27: OCTOBER The month didn’t start off too well as we lost our football game to Joy. . Members of the Ivy Tower staff accompanied Miss Lebermann 30: to Normal University for a Yearbook Staff meeting. The Frosh-Soph team seem to be doing better than the Varsity. They won a very exciting football game with Aledo, 12-6. The F.T.A. held their first meeting in the High School cafeteria. 1: This week the student body really got down to business studying for the first six weeks exams. The kids were well rewarded, however, because we won our football game with Cambridge, 4: 12-6, on Thursday. Today the teachers went to school. Guess they don’t know all the 7: answers to our questions. Our High School Band represented our school at Macomb’s annual 8: homecoming. The Frosh-Soph team won another game, 13-6. Winola was the underdog this time. Whose ring does Jackie N. have? 11: What Sophomore girl, who rides Tom LaDue's bus, wore her pa- 13• jamas to school? Today some of the F.H.A. members went to East Moline for a sectional meeting. Hope they had fun. The F.F.A. held their initiation in the gym. I hear they always have fun at their initiation!! 16: The Varsity football team allowed Atkinson a happy homecoming, losing 26-6. 18: The Frosh-Soph team did it again. This time we won over Orion, 20-13. Harvey F., do you like to model 7th grade cheer leading outfits? 20: What a relief--the Almighty Seniors were gone today to have their pictures taken - good luck Paul!! The remaining classes 22: were excused early for Faculty meeting. What a hectic week!! We were out every night getting the floats ready for the Homecoming parade. The newly formed Chemistry Club elected their officers tonight. We know you’ll do a good job as President, Duane. 28-30: All received the first edition of Tiger Talk printed by the Starlet F.H.A. Chapter. Tonight is the last chance to finish the floats. The King and 4: Queen were announced at the bonfire and pep meeting. Congratu- lations Judy and Dave! Elaine, what did Mrs. Rhodenbaugh 6: catch you doing at the junior float? Your secret is out! What a day!! It began to rain just as the parade was getting 7: lined up. The sun came out later, but the floats had already been spoiled. 9: The rain didn’t seem to drown our school spirit because we won over Rockridge 20-18. To celebrate our happy Homecoming” everyone danced to the music of John Payne and the Ambassadors. 13: Port Byron High School was host to a district F.T.A. meeting. The student body and faculty came to school today wide awake because of the extra hour of sleep gained ingoing back to Standard time. Rockridge thought they’d get back at us for our win on Home- coming. but our Frosh-Soph players surprised them by winning 19-0. Everyone spent most of the day gazing at their tuberculosis tests wondering if there would be a reaction. Janeen and Marty seem to like going around the halls hugging each other! At last the big day, for the Juniors--choosing class rings. The F.F.A. boys did a lovely job serving the F.H.A. Mother- Daughter Banquet--Fun and Happiness for All. The Varsity players have really had a tough month, and they just couldn’t keep up with Orion tonight. Afraid we lost 36-0. The rain didn’t help either. Over the week-end, many attended Halloween parties-, and a few pranks were played. NOVEMBER Paul came back to take some more annual pictures today. The Fresh-Soph, football team showed the good things to come by winning the Cornbelt Conference trophy. CONGRATULATIONS! Our Varsity won their last football game with Winola. After the i game, many stayed for the Sock Hop sponsored by the seniors. American Educational Week: The open house was postponed from Friday night to Monday night because of the snow. Everyone enjoyed the vacation on Veteran's Day. What a busy week! Everyone is studying for the second six weekj tests, and also the seniors are practicing and frantically learning their lines for the play. The Able Miss Cain was a great success. At our first basketball game of the season, we played Yates City here. I guess we were too enthused and excited because we lost 41-47. More practice, fellas! Thanksgiving Day! We started a four day vacation--a very wel- come relief. What happened to scare all the girls at your slumber party, Gleys Ann? Randle D. decided to join the football team at the close of the season during a pep meeting. Everyone came back to school wide-awake and rarln' to go after the long vacation. Wonder how long that spirit will last? DECEMBER At our basketball game, we lost to Alexis 44-43. Oh what one more basket could have done! Three cheers for Toni Hutchins— she was elected president of the Pep Club today. Both the Varsity and Jr. Varsity won their games with Joy. That made the coaches happy, didn't it Mr. Jackson and Mr. Upton? The F.H.A. Stailets held an Oyster-Chili supper at the high school. What lovely waitresses! We're very proud of our basketball teams. Both won their game, this time with Cambridge. There was an assembly today for the benefit of Explorer Scouts, but the whole student body was allows to attend. We kept up our winning streak--this time Atkinson lost, 38-23. The band held their annual Christmas concert tonight. Mr. Sullivan's doing a fine job directing our band. Another one of those handy faculty meetings--school was dis- missed at 1:32. We did it again—Sherrard 55, Rockridge 35. The F.T.A. held their Christmas party in the High School cafe- teria. I wonder what was in that punch!!! Guess it had to happen sooner or later! Our Varsity lost to Aledc 57-46. Our Jr. Varsity battled a tough game, winning by one point. The annual Christmas Chorus Concert attracted a crowd despite the cold. Sherrard High has such sweet voices!!! The long awaited day has finally come. Christmas vacation. Classes were dismissed at 1:30 for a party in the gym. All en- joyed Santa's (Mr. Upton's) visit and jokes. The year ended well for the Varsity--we beat Riverdale 48-35. Our Jr. Varsity also won their game. The Junior Varsity received fourth place in the Holiday Tourna- ment at Alexis. Our boys played gallant games up to the end. JANUARY Ready or not, we had to come back to five more months of hard studying before summer vacation. We cheered our team to victory over Orion in the first round ofr Cornbelt Tournament. What a night! We broke the record of seventeen defeats by de- feating AlWood, 38-30, and we also gained the ear of corn. For the first time in nine years, we won first place in the Cornbc 4 Tournament by defeating Winola, 54-48. CONGRATULATIONS FELLAS! Everyone is doing last minute cramming for the coming semeste tests. 19: We all had an unexpected vacation for two days because of a snow storm. Despite the snow, our Varsity went on to another victory—Joy 40, Sherrard 48. We all hated to see the Jr. Varsity lose. 22: We again kept the ear of com by defeating AlWood. The Jr. Varsity team also gained their little ear of com. 25: Good ole Paul came out today to take some more pictures for the annual. 27: Off to another tournament. This time to the Aledo Invitational. We won over Little York, 54-31. 29: We met AlWood again, but they fell to their third defeat before us, 60-50. 30: We played Aledo for the championship tonight, but even though we lost, the fellas played a great game. FEBRUARY 2: The Varsity kept their ear of corn by winning over Cambridge 48- 43. The Junior Varsity lost their ear of com. 5: The Junior Varsity lost another game, this time to Atkinson. The Varsity won theirs. 9: The Varsity won another game--guess there is no stopping our players once they get started. The Junior Varsity lost again— Rockridge 38, Sherrard 34. 11: Lovely, deep snow and no school! The Sweetheart Dance was also cancelled until the 18th of February. 12: Lincoln’s birthday and a welcome vacation. The holiday must have been too much for the Varsity because they lost their game with Winola 76-59. The Junior Varsity brought home a victory! 13: The Varsity won an exciting game with Riverdale 53-51. 15: Sherrard High had a good representation at the F.T. A. district meeting at Silvis. We sang the F.T. A. song twice for Miss Slusher. 16: The Varsity did it again--they won over Orion. Keep up the good playing. 17: The Chemistry Club had a lot of fun at their party! Who was that character with all the hats? 18: An assembly program was held today. Some of our students have real ability in jumping! Elaine and Larry were crowned king and queen of the Sweetheart Dance tonight, and then we all danced to the music of Frank Black and his Ambassadors. 19: The Varsity beat AlWood 55-35. This game won back our ear of com and clinched the Combelt for us. 23: The day all the Juniors have been waiting for—the class rings arrived! I suppose some of the owners won’t keep theirs very longl!!! The Varsity won their game with R.M. A. 58-27. 25: Snow again, and we got to go home at the end of fifth period. APRIL 1: Lot of students fell for the April Fool's Day pranks!! 2: Seniors had their party tonight. Music Makes the Heart to Sing Marching at the Homecoming Parade The year 1959-1960 was a very good year for the band. The band started out by leading the Homecoming Parade with the march music it is so well noted for, and later that night the ban j presented a musical-marching show at the half of our football game. Besides playing for the pep meetings this year, the band also sponsored a tra- veling pep band that went along with the pep club to all football games away from home. During the basketball season, it provided enter- tainment at the games. On February 26, ten ensembles and solos went to East Moline to par- ticipate in the district music contest. Two of these entries went on to the state contest at Normal. The band as a whole entered the dis- trict contest on April 2. On May 4, many people heard our spring concert. To conclude a successful year, the band provided the music for commencement exercises in May. SHERRARD HIGH SCHOOL PEP BAND The picture to the right shows Mrs. King, our chorus director, and her two accompanists Rose Mary Klingebiel and Garry Clarke. The chorus provided many hours of happy listening for our school this year. At open house, a group of boys called the Tuesday Tunesters” sang. At Christmas time, a concert of holiday music was presented which included several special numbers. As soon as Christmas was over, Mrs. King began to get ready for the spring concert and festival. On March 22, the concert was given, and on May 10, the chorus participated in theCombelt Music Festival. Besides concerts, there have been many special groups selected from the chorus members who sang at various functions. The chorus finished their musical year by having a special ensemble sing at Baccalaureate. Chemistry, a subject of- fered at Sherrard High, is a science dealing with the compo- sition of materials and the changes in composition which these materials undergo. Physics, another science taught at Sherrard High, deals with matter, energy, and phys- ical changes in matter. It is often divided into major units such as mechanics, heat, sound, light, electricity, and nuclear physics. General Science is still an- other science offered at our school. It is a phase of learning which crosses through all of the sciences, from Agriculture to Chemistry. This subject is re- quired for all freshmen to give them a working knowledge of the phenomena of science. Biology, a science required for all sophomores, is a study of plants, animals, man, and bor- der-line organisms. It deals with the physical make-up of all living things. It helps the students to recognize some of our problems in conservation. A Physical Education class is a time for sports and games, dancing, skill tests, stunts, and tumbling. Physical Education is a time for learning. A strong and healthy body is needed for strenuous activities. In your Physical Education class, you can learn how to keep your body fit for work and play. You can learn to move freely and easily so that you will stand straighter. look better, and to be able to work and play without unneces- sary strain. You also learn to play safe- ly and prevent injury to your- self and others. The vigorous activity of play releases tensions and is important in keeping your mind and emotions healthy. Your Physical Education class is a good place to learn more about other people. As you lose or win games, you have a chance to prove sportsmanship. You soon discover that the best teams are made up of people whc work together. Boys' and Girls' Physical Ed- ucation is a required subject at Sherrard High. Business Subjects This picture of Cookie Beaver and Mtke Hutchins is taken in the Geography class of our school. In Geography we study how the climate, location, terrain, and rainfall af- fect people and the way they live. Another social study offered by our school is World History. It consists of a study of civilization from earliest times to the present time with a strong emphasis given to geographical settings. It shows us that many of the things we have today have evolved from the early ages. United States History consists of a study of our country from its early beginning in Europe to the leading world power it is today. By state requirement. United States History is compulsory for all students in the junior class. By recent state legis- lation. in order to graduate from high school, each student must pass a written examination on the United States Constitution, the State Con- stitution. the Declaration of Inde- pendence, the Australian ballot system, and the care of the flag. In Modern Problems, a course open only to seniors, we study cur- rent social, economic, and politi- cal problems. Most of our informa- tion is obtained from current publi- cations. Studies This picture shows Fred Moffitt, Tom Adams, and Don Ray Brown working a bookkeeping problem. Bookkeeping is a subject helpful to all students who will have to keep reports and records for their own business or for a company that hires them. In addition to Bookkeeping, our school offers Typing I and II to all juniors and seniors wishing to take it. It is believed that most students should take at least one year of typ- ing. and those planning to use it in their vocation should take twoyears. Shorthand, a class open to sen- iors. is recommended to boys and girls interested in secretarial work. One year of typing is required be- fore Shorthand can be taken. Business English, still another commercial subject offered at our school, prepares us for the business world. In this class, we learn to use the correct business terms and the proper English in writing busi- ness letters. Vocational Agriculture Vocational Homemaking This picture shows the Soph- omore class, under the super- vision of Mr. Duane Gregory, looking at soil samples. Land judging is the main phase of Sophomore Agriculture. There is four years of Agri- culture offered atSherrard High. The phases of work commonly covered is: classroom work; supervised farm practice work; farm mechanics; extra curricu- lar activities. The four-year course covers animal husbandry, field crops and soils, marketing, rural econ- omics. farm accounting, and management. The course is set up so that the boys receive background material the first two years, and the last two are spent studying fine points such as farm plan- ning and income taxes. This picture shows Mrs. Burgess’s Home Economics class busy at work. Our school offers three yean of Home Economics to high school girls. In our homemak- ing classes, emphasis is given to many phases of home and family living: child develop- ment; clothing--selection and construction; consumer prob- lems; family relationships; hom management; management of time, money, and energy;meal planning and safety first. Home Economics allows stu dents to acquire skills and know edges which prepare them to become better family members today and homemakers tomor- row. Mathematics This picture shows Miss Barnes' Algebra I class solving an equation. Freshman are given a choice of tak- ing Algebra I or practical Math. Trigonometry, Geometry, and Algebra II are also offered. Any student wanting to go into engineering or any field where advanced math is needed is advised to take Algebra II and Trigonometry. Shop This picture shows Mr. Junchen explaining the operation of one of the more complicated machines in our Shop at Sherrard High to Eugene Martens, Jeff Hickman, Larry Rhodenbaugh. Four years of shop is offered at our school. Freshman and Sophomores are given a background for the more advanced years. Junior and Senior Shop develops more technique and skill. The Sherrard Industrial Arts Department is rated the number one shop in the rural area. Languages This picture shows Mrs. Johnson's Freshman English Class hard at work. Three years of English is required for all students at Sherrard High. These three courses help students read and write clearly and effectively. Approximately half the class time is given to literature and a like amount to grammar and composition. Usually this work is alternated. Students that are college bound are advised to take English IV in their Senior year. This includes a stiff review course in grammar, a research paper, and survey of English literature. Latin, a subject also taught at Sherrard High, gives students a better background for English. It also teaches how the life of the ancient Romans has affected our present life. Drivers’ Training Mr. Upton is getting ready to take Mickey Turner and Larry Johnson for a driving lesson. We have had Drivers’ Training in our school for three years. The two most important objectives of Driver Education are to develop the proper attitudes for driving and to give students experience driving under the supervision of a trained adult. The car the students are trained in is equipped with dual controls. Driver Education is an important way of reducing traffic accidents. In our complex traffic society, people must be taught safe habits and practices. Our students develop a concern for the rights and safety of others. Our Reel” Life Story Cast Class of '60 of Sherrard High School Scene..................................Shenard High School Authors.....................................Carol Welsh Nina Rhodenbaugh Carol DeGreve Director...................................Miss Lebermann Producers................................. Carol Cameron Mary Lou Sommers Photography.................................Fred Moffitt Prologue The story of the Class of '60 consists of four of the best years of our lives, which slipped by all too quickly. From the first scene--initiation—to the last--our long march in our caps and gowns, we experienced many wonderful and interesting things that will long be remembered. Act I: Beginning of the Freshman Year Scene I Seventy confused freshmen entered Sherrard High. At first we didn’t like it; however, it gradually grew on us. It seemed as if millions of almighty seniors converged upon us as the feared initiation grew near. It really wasn’t half as bad as we had thought it would be. We certainly enjoyed ourselves. With the help of our wonderful sponsors, Mrs. Trotter and Mr. Bradley, we elected: Carol Welsh........................................President John Hebbeln..................................Vice-President Claudia Johnston.................................. Secretary Judy Meredith......................................Treasurer Elaine Anderson............................Student Council Jim Neumann................................Student Council Scene II Homecoming was a success for us as our We've Got Atkinson On A Merry-Go-Round” float won first prize. We were well represented by our King and Queen attendants, Dave Miller and Patty Lingafelter. With our eyes looking way anead to our Senior trip, we presented the program Patrick O’Godfrey, at our Freshma Frolic. As our Freshman year came to a close, we looked forward to our Sophomore year to bring us all the sufferings and joys that we had our first year. Act II: Beginning of Our Sophomore Year Scene I What a pleasant feeling it is to be humble Sophomores instead of lowly Freshmen. Our class sponsors were Miss Lebermann and Mr. Jochums. We started the year off right by electing a set of good class officers. They were: Jim Neumann........................................President Dean Dawson...................................Vice-President Claudia Johnston.................................. Secretary Elaine Anderson....................................Treasurer Carol Welsh................................Student Council Dave Ziemer................................Student Council Scene II The Homecoming was a failure as a flu epidemic and the weather forced us to cancel the parade. Elected as attendants were Elaine Anderson and Dean Dawson. We danced to records of WQUA disc-jockey Don Nelson at our Sophomore Night. As we entered our Junior year, we looked forward to really building up our treasury. Act III: Beginning of Our Junior Year Scene I As Juniors we started to build our treasury in anticipation of the Prom we had to finance and our Senior Class Trip. Our Junior class sponsors, Mrs. Rhodenbaugh, Mrs. Burgess, and Mr. King helped us earn the much needed money. We elected class officers to carry us through our big money-making year. They were: Nina Rhodenbaugh................................ President Wayne Wadsworth.............................Vice-President Sharon Gauley................................... Secretary Dorothy Holcomb................................. Treasurer Carol Welsh...........Vice-President of the-Student Council Carol Cameron .............................Student Council Tom Adams ................................Student Council Scene II As for Homecoming, well, we can’t win first all the time with our float. But second place isn’t bad. Our class Kted Nina Rhodenbaugh and John Hebbeln as attendants. We raked in the money from our concession stand. We never thought people could eat so much popcorn and drink much pop. Afterwards we always had the pleasant task of cleaning up. All of us were soon running around showing off our class rings. We waited a long time for them. We all chose a :ferent model of ring from the same case. We surprised everyone with our play, The Unguided Miss, which we presented even with the absence of our direc- Mrs. Trotter. We made more money Mill For the Prom, it was decided to have only a dance instead of a banquet or both. Our Prom was the best ever pre- :ed at Sherrard according to many teachers. Were we ever proud! Our theme was Hawaii. By the end of our Junior year, we could see our fond dreams of becoming Seniors begin to unfold. Act IV: Beginning of Our Senior Year Scene I We have finally reached the final act of our reel life story. Now we know why seniors are so superior to under- lismen. Our class sponsors were Miss Barnes, Mr. Gregory, and Mr. Junchen. For the last time we elected class :cers. They were: Dave Ziemer........................................President Denny Johnston ...............................Vice-President Carol Cameron .....................................Secretary Harvey Fritch......................................Treasurer Jean Holtz.................................Student Council Rolland Johnson............................Student Council Scene II We joyously initiated fifty helpless freshmen. Oh whatfun!!! We won first place again with Homecoming float, hum, it is kind of tiresome to win first prize all the time. We didn't have much success in our magazine cam- fcn, but our Senior Play was a riot. Everyone who saw The Able Miss Cain said they enjoyed it very much, did make quite a bit of money from it. Everyone dressed in their very best for Senior Pictures. We made more money for our trip at the Senior Class We had a wonderful time on our Senior trip. It’s sure nice to enjoy the Prom without working or paying money for it. Now we are really shocked into reality as we approach the end. We've got our caps and gowns and are attending aalaureate. We begin to feel lost as we leave the security, companionship, and enjoyment of high school. On Nation night all sad, yet happy Seniors realize that we have a long and difficult path ahead of us. It now remains us to finish the story started by our high school education. We now take our last curtain call together as the Class of 1960.
