From Us To You We, the members of the class of 1959, leave Sherrard High School with a diploma and a proud feeling. We have been a part of Sherrard High School for so long that we have a lot of fine memories, but we can't leave them However, we don’t want the class of 1960 to feel slighted; so we leave them all the joys of school parties, of the Alwood games, and all the social whirl before graduation. We also leave them the woes that beset the unwary Seniors--the heavy assignments, the high cost of everything, the worry over not graduating, and the helpless feeling of being left out in the cold, cruel world after commencement. I, Georgia Adams, will my class ring to Mary Hayostek, who wishes she had a diamond. I, Judith Anderson, will my singing voice to Marie Redecker, so she can woo Larry. 1, Bill Alexander, will my position on the football team to Albert Taets and Ronnie Flynn. It has taken four years to complete our building. The first floor of our building was started in August of 1955 when sixty -eight green” freshmen drove up to Sherrard High on the buses or in dilapidated Fords. Some came timidly afoot. They all were lost and had some difficulty in finding their way through the halls to the assembly In the gym. Mr. Trotter gave instructions and directions to the different classes, but some remained In a dazed condition for several days. We decided we needed someone to lead us through this maze, and we elected our fresh man officers—Georgia Adams, president; Judy Stegemann, secretary; Jeanette Zlemer, treasurer. Our sponsors through our first year were Mrs. Trotter and Mr. Bradley. Freshman initiation was a day of fun and laughter for all of us. It launched us succesi fully on our way as construction workers. We added bricks to our building by electing our King and Queen attendants for Homecoming—Connie Johnson and Gary McManus. Winning first place with our float proved we were good workers. During the spring we sponsored what was affectionately known as Freshman Night, at which time we collected money for our longed-for trip some day in the future. The final semester exams proved that we were well able to manage for ourselves. We returned to high school In the fall of '56 without any evidence of the green look that had been so prominent the year before. In October, another Homecoming project came into view. This was another chance to build further in our construction. We came in third in the float contest with the theme We'll Bull through Atkinson. We elected Sandra Lingafelter and Jim Witter as attendants to the royalty. It was surely good to see the new freshmen being initiated into the ranks. More money was earned for the trip of the future. Sophomore Night netted a large profit to be added to our hoard. We closed the year with Connie Schutte as president, Sandra Lingafelter as treasurer, and Gary Me Manus as vice president. Here we came again—we reached the third story of our building. We were now noble upper classmen . In our junior year we were a smaller but wiser and more money- minded class. With only two years left of school, we settled down and began to work. Mrs. Burgess, Mrs. Rhodenbaugh, and Mr. King were our sponsors this year. Mary Carol Aivin was elected president; Connie Schutte, vice president; Sandra Lingafelter, treasurer; and Gary McManus, secretary. The following are the most Important events of our junior year. Connie Schutte and Craig Miller were elected our Homecoming attendants. This year we were in charge of the concession stand. We may have burnt some pop-corn, but the experience we had made better builders of us all. The Junior Play, under the direction of Mrs. Trotter, offered us a chance to display our dramatic ability. The production of Green Grow the Onions gained a large return for our treasury. A dramatic stone had been added to our building. A Hobo Day, sponsored by us, added to our work experience. We all pitchei in and did odd jobs around the community. We cleaned basements, washed cars, baby sat, hauled junk, and did many other tasks of this nature. Again our treasury was nour- ished. Spring found us eager for vacation. We envied the Seniors, who were taking thei trip to Chicago. We attended graduation in May. One more year and we would be in the caps and gowns. In the tall we returned as a small class of forty-two members. This was quite a reduction from the sixty-eight green freshmen who entered the doors of Sherrard Hlgfr School in 1955. By this time, we were considered old timers . Our patience and industry had resulted in a large bank roll, an excellent educational background for the future, and the happiness that comes only from high-school years. The experience of hard work had almost completed our building. Only a few blocks remained. This final year was to be the last year of school for many of us; for the rest, it would be the foundation for college. The Senior year was really our year. To begin with, we were no longer second. We were first in all. We maintained a wonderful attendance record, we had a high number of students on the honor roll, and we were the leaders of school life. We set the pattern for other classes. We all learned by trial and error. We hoped that our last year would be of some inspiration to the future senior classes of Sherrard. Homecoming was a won- derful time this year. We were no longer attendants. Georgia Adams and Carl Miller were our Queen and King. The student council president was from our class. The Future Homemakers of America elected a Senior as president. We didn't wish to be boastful, but we were proud of ourselves. We worked and studied long and hard for what we had. We felt that dais was our reward for our building. It was almost completed and it deserved some praise. Some of our other activities this year included our play, Clementine, directed by Mrs. Trotter. It brought in a fine sum to our treasury. The magazine sales were also fun and exciting for both teams. Our class raised more money than last year's teams, and we are proud of the record. It seemed as if we attended all the games, all the dances, and got better grades than before. We did almost all we could to cram everything possible that was fine and constructive into our last year. Senior pictures were exchanged, collect- ed, and given to friends and relatives. At the end of the first semester we were aware of the closeness of May. Our building was finished—only the finishing touches remained. The Prom was a time of honor for us. The Juniors worked hard and provided a gay and happy time for us one Friday evening after our return from a wonderful trip. All the waiting and planning was well worth while. The trip was a success. Thank you, Mr. and Mrs. Birkhead, for going with us. We then Pegan the weeks of finishing our studies, searching for gifts for graduation, purchasing new clothes, and remembering our high school life. Finally, May 26 was here. As the march played, we proudly walked up the aisle to the stage. We listened carefully to the advice and encouragement we were given from Mr. King and Mr. Trotter. Our guest speaker told us to face the future unafraid and to make our building accomplish its goal. A few tears were shed, hands were shaken, and happy hearts were filled with warmth and happiness as we left the ivy-covered towers of Sherrard High School for the final time. This has been our history, the record of the Class of 1959. We are proud of our accomplishments, grateful for the help and understanding from all the teachers and advisors we have had; and in our hearts and memories, we will forever hold the thoughts of the four wonderful years at our school—Sherrard High School. Have you stoped to think about the many things which make up your school? As you look through the pages of your IVY TOWER, you will see the things that are a part of Sherrard High School. May this book remind you of the ideals you have set, work you have accomplished, and the fun you have had. Yes, this is your book of mem- ories--memories of your life at Sherrard High School from September, 1958 to May, 1959. AUGUST 28: The freshmen and the juniors had to register today. It was nice to see old friends, but who wants to start school? 29: The sophomores and the seniors registered today. The seniors are glad this is their last year. 30: This was the first whole day of school. All the freshmen were confused. It was too hot to do anything so we just sat and tried to keep cool. SEPTEMBER 5: Today the lowly freshmen were formally welcomed to SHS by the ALMIGHTY SENIORS. Slaves followed masters around like little puppies. There were also some strange odors following the slaves. 8: The underclassmen all smiled real pretty for Paul when he took their pictures for the annual. He’s a good ggg 9: Today we saw legs and more legs. The girls had cheerleading try-outs in the gym for the rest of us. The boys especially enjoyed it. 16: The lucky seniors got the whole day off to go to town and be shot by Paul. That took about five minutes; the, rest of the time we were on our own. 19: it's a little early to tell who this year’s steadies will be, but we have a few possibilities such as Dave and Betty H., and Jim and Betty L. 22: There were some mighty disappointed seniors today when we got our proofs back. I guess we all expected to look like movie stars, but we were fooled, the pictures turned out to be just like us. 23 We got half a day off for some strange reason, but who asks c iestions; WE ENJOYED IT!! 30: All classes had class meetings. We wasted a great deal of time, but we did get around to nominating King and Queen attendents for the Homecoming. OCTOBER 1: Remember when Micaela, Dorothy, and Carol took a shower after P.E.? 2: Many students went to the gym to listen to the World Series. The junior class looked at the class rings with hopeful anticipation. 3: Our game with Joy was tied at 6-6. What cheering and screaming was done! The junior class sponsored a sock hop after the game. 6: Six week tests are beginning. There will be some midnight oil burning now for a few nights! 9: The State Inspectors came to visit our school and were there almost all day. We lost our game with Cam- bridge. One of our players was injured quite badly. No school Friday because it is Teacher's Institute. 16: The juniors and seniors took a test in the study hall for most of the day. Tonight was the Snake Dance. Everyone had a lot of fun, especially on the way home--huh, Albert? 17: Today was the big day-the Homecoming Parade. It was a nice day, and the parade was a success! The freshman float won first prize. We lost the game with Atkinson. The dance drew a large crowd. By the way, whose ring did Sue receive from a Winola boy tonight? 21: Well, we rated another half-day off. This was enjoyed by all except Lorretta, who was in the hospital. 22: That man with the rings was here again today, so the juniors put out their little hands to be measured. I bet some junior boys don’t keep their rings very long. Who gets yours, Dave? 28: The seniors have been practicing for their play and working real hard. Thanks for the party Mrs. Trotter. 30: The F.H.A. Banquet was held tonlght-you'd make a good model, Ruthie. NOVEMBER 3: A few ills are left from Friday’s game-a couple broke up, poor Betty; a junior boy broke his knee-but don't worry, knees and hearts both heal. 4: The seniors are busily practicing for their play. 7: Lonesome Town! No game to go to-too cold for the Memri........we stayed home like good kiddies. The seniors magazine sales are closely tied. Both teams are trying to sell all that they can. 13: I bet if the girls practiced as much as the boys do, they would have the best basketball team in the Cornbelt. Dribble that ball, Nancy Cox! 14: Open House was tonight. Parents came to explore the classrooms. What senior girl did Tom take home after the Open House? 17: The senior magazine sales ended today, with Jeanette's team coming out the winner. Twila Larson and Duane Baker won the prizes for selling the most. 21: The senior class play was tonight. There was a large crowd to see CLEMENTINE. What a time was had at the play party afterward! 24: Over the weekend, Elaine Anderson was in a wreck with Judy Miller. Elaine is in the hospital. This is the first day in the new six weeks. The Varsity Cheerleaders wore their new uniforms at the Pep meeting to- day. 26: This is the last day of school this week. A four-day week-end is ahead for fun. Many are looking forward to the Tom Owen's dance in the gym Saturday night. Boone and a few other students were involved in an accident on the Mathervllle blacktop on their way home from the dance. DECEMBER ' 1: Everyone came back from a big four day weekend. We all gained a couple of pounds due to Thanksgiving Dinner. Santa Claus is just around the corner, isn't he, Norman? 2: All the senior girls are supposed to become wonderful house-wives or so Betty Crocker thinks. The game tonight was a masterpiece of winning on free-throws. 4: People just don't seem to understand that they aren't supposed to talk to Mr. Birkhead’s study hall, espec- ially when they’re waiting for a fire drill. 5: We had a pep meeting today. We lost our game with Joy. Mr. Jackson won't be able to walk down the street in Joy. 8: Sleight bells ring; it’s snowing like mad. Maybe we’ll get snowed in. Goody! Looks like the Schutte girls are going steady-could be. Daryl, you surprised us. 9: The seniors received their pictures today. My, didn't the remarks fly then . We played Cambridge to- night, and we won. It was 12 below this morning. 11: Class meetings were held. The juniors and seniors met together to discuss plans for the Prom. No one got anywhere so a committee was appointed to try to reach a dicision. 12: Everyone is shopping like mad for Christmas presents. The rush is on. 15: The band and chorus Christmas Concert oh Sunday night was good and drew a large crowd. 19: This morning we had classes, but then we had a Christmas party from 12:45 to three. The band, led by Dave Pearson, played. The gifts were distributed by Santa (Mr. Jackson). Then we all danced to records the remaining time and had refreshments. Thanks for letting us out early to begin a wonderful 16 day vacation from school. JANUARY 5: What a horrible day to start school, 13 below zero, snow and Ice on the roads. But the vacation was well spent by all, whether In Florida or Illinois. Gifts, rings, pictures, and hugs and kisses were ex- changed over the holidays. Whose class ring did Mlcaela have? 7: We started the Rockrldge tournament off right by whipping Wlnola. 8: Tonight was the final night of the Tournament. Orion and Rockrldge played first for third place and Orion won. Then we played Alwood for the Championship. We lost, but our boys played a gallant game. We won the second place trophy. 12: The whole senior high school had an Assembly In the Study Hall to honor the team and Mr. Jackson. 13: The entire school Is preparing for semester exams. The P.E. classes had theirs today. It was a dandy. 15: Flnally-the last of the semester exams-tonlght we sleep. Is Nancy going with Jerry again? Those two! 16: Tonight we played Orion here and won. It was a very exciting game as It went Into overtime, and we won by one point. The FHA sponsored a Sock Hop after the game. 23: Well, the snow plows were out. We came back to school. It was a good vacation though. 27: The junior and senior classes met today to vote on whether to have a dance or banquet for the Prom. Members from all classes are filling their March of Dimes containers In the hope of winning the contest. 30: The March of Dimes Contest ended today. There was a Pep meeting because we played Aledo In the tour- nament tonight. We won! A lot of the students went to the firemen's ball afterwards to celebrate. Satur- day night we played Alwood for the championship trophy and lost. We won second place. FEBRUARY 2: Here we are back to the old grind. We're now getting ready for the Sweetheart Dance. 3: Some people should learn to stay awake In study hall--isn't that right Terry? In assembly Mr. Jackson showed us the trophy we won at the Aledo Tournament. 6: The most thrilling game of the season was played against Atkinson tonight-we won in an overtime-64 to 62. 9: The week end was exciting for everyone, especially for Sandy Lingafelter-she received a class ring from an Aledo boy. We also had our teeth X-Rayed today. 11: The social event of the school year, the Sweetheart Dance, was a success. The new formals and dresses added a gay flash of color to the red and white decorated gym. The night was clear, and the moon was yellow, and everyone had a good time. 13: The unlucky day proved to be a lucky one for the junlors-they received their class rings today. They are all very pretty. I wonder if their original owners will keep them for very long. 16: Today was rather dull. The Band sponsored a skating party at the Prom tonight. What an exciting night, eh, Sandy Claeys? 17: No school this afternoon. Oh, these delightful Tuesdays! We had an assembly program, too. A pianist and a singer did all the Broadway hits. 18: Watch out now. It won’t be safe to be on the road. A lot of the Driver’s Training students took their driving tests today. 19: The band kids are practicing like mad for the district contest at Galesburg. 20: Tonight we had a game with Alwood here. We lost. Saturday we had another game with New Boston here, and we won. The Freshman class sponsored a Sock Hop after the game. Everyone in Unit 200 got in free to the game. MARCH 4: The boys' and girls' choruses are working hard to make the Spring Concert a success. 11: The juniors spent the morning taking the constitution test. 13: The Spring Concert was a huge success. The gay dresses and sports shirts really made us think of spring being just around the corner. 17: Another half-day session. This was especially enjoyed by the boys who needed to repair their cars while the weather was nice--let's hear those pipes, Dean! 18: The F.F.A. boys had their banquet tonight. Too bad the girls couldn't attend this stag affair. 24: Spring fever is affecting everyone. Some of the students were absent, and even the teachers seemed a little absent minded. 27: A day of rest, Good Friday. Last minute Easter clothes are being searched for all over the Tri-Cities. 30. Easter Vacation. Too bad there is school tomorrow. It was a lovely week-end. APRIL 1: April Fool's Day. A few pranks were pulled, but no one was hurt- laughter never killed anyone. Did you fix the rip in your skirt, Dorothy? 7: The Athletic Banquet was tonight. The announcement of who will receive the major and minor letters was made. 9: The seniors are preparing for their class trip. 10: The end of the fifth six weeks--only one more to go. It seems as if the year has flown by. Have you still got that pretty class ring of Larry's, Marie? 12: Again we exercise our vocal cords for Mrs. King. The Cornbelt Concert is Tuesday. Let's practice those songs Barbara and Ruthie! 14: The bus load of chorus kids went to Alwood today for the concert. We practiced all day on that hot stage. 21: We went 'til noon today. The teachers should have things straightened out by now. Tuesdays always were an unlucky day for a senior girl and a junior boy. 22: There has been a lot of hurrying and rushing in the junior class this week- only two days left until the play. 24: The junior play. The Unguided Miss, was a huge success. Everyone knew his part, and we seniors can ad- mit that they did as well as we did last year. 29: After school this afternoon, the freshmen and sophomores went to their track meet. Too bad Harry isn’t a sophomore this year-he could win a lot of prizes. MAY I: The long hours of practice and staying nights after school paid off for the band members. The band concert : was greatly enjoyed by everyone. 5: Today the Varsity Conference Track Meet was held. It looks like a few junior boys should be practicing a little harder and a little more often if they expect to win anything next year. 15: This was the night that marked the end of the year for the upperclassmen-the JUNIOR-SENIOR PROM. The decorations in the gym were gay and pretty. It was a night to remember. 19: This was the last faculty meeting. We were dismissed at 1:00. Summer can’t be very far away; some of the kids walked home. 24: High School Baccalaureate was a very solemn and inspiring night for the seniors; we are a little afraid to go out into the cruel world, but we'll manage. 26: Today was the last day of school for another year for everyone except the seniors-no more books, lessons, or tests for them. From now on it will be a different kind of work for some of us- we will be doing jobs where we can use all we have learned at our school, SHERRARD HIGH SCHOOL! Leads The Way We held our first meeting of the school year at Coyne Center Grade School. We had a weiner roast before we elected officers. In November, we saw a film Not By Chance; and Mr. Clifford King led the following discussion. The students who visited Shimer College in Mt. Carroll then told about their trip. Our Christmas Party was held at Miss Lebermann’s home. The recreation included slides of Europe and Japan. At our March meeting, we saw the film Mike Makes His Mark. We had very good attendance at all three district meetings in Kewanee, Moline, and Rock Island. Jan- ice Christensen was elected attendance secretary of the Blackhawk Division of the Future Teachers of America. Students Give Orphan New Life! On the right we see a picture of Shin Yang Chun, who we adopted and cared for since February, 1956. When we adopted Shin, she was 11 years old and looked half starved, which she probably was. Today, at 14, she is small but is still growing. Shin lives in a house which we help finance and is going to school with our financial help. Dollars to doughnuts, Tommy Britton was just about the best bean grower in town. So there was some excitement when he gave up his weekly column of gardening tips in his Dad's newspaper, in order to be a Great Writer---With A Message. For the first time in years, he failed to enter his prize-winning peas and radishes in the annual county fair. Instead he sent off his story, Shakespeare's Onions, to a national magazine. Trouble developed when Tommy’s uncle, Thomas Britton, a Pulitzer Prize winning author arrived for a visit and announced he had just sent his latest story to the same magazine. The title? You guessed it.' From there on in, there was trouble a plenty. The Great Writer: Tommy Britton (Craig Miller) Aunt Minnie (Janice Christensen) and Mother (Judy Anderson) discuss a hectic day.
