This little volume is published neither for literary critics nor the unsympa- thetic public. Here has been made merely an attempt to record the humorous, the work and the play of Sherman students in the glory of youth. This, the first yearbook ever to be published by the students of Sherman High School, takes in its beginning the rough form of an unpolished gem. We sincerely hope that the generations which follow do not let die what We have begun in good faith, so that in the years to come, when we look back in reverie, We shall have the printed page and the laughing picture to recall the glorious deeds of our past youth. I ll ll lhrmflian PRINCIPAL gan D. well, vn. cz. Principal Jarrell is serving his first year in the administrative capacity at Sherman. Mr. Jarrell has proved his worth as a real school man and friend. He is a true son of Boone County, having graduated from this school in the class of '3l. He received his HS, from Marshall College and com' pleted his work for a master's degree at Duke University in l940. t I CONGRATULATIONS TILDEN HENDRICKS When Hendricks resigned from the Board of Education there was much specu- lation regarding his successor. There were many names considered and submitted for the position on the board. Many old- timers were talked about. But it was a newcomer to the political picture who re- ceived the position. Van B, Stith, an ardent sports fan and competent business man, was selected to succeed Hendricks. The students have great confidence that Stith will carry the standard for a great Sherman. Page sm-1114-7'l: r' Wulhnmlirm Sherman High School has been fortu- nate down through the years with a set of competent oflicials. Many prominent men have come and gone, but the memory of those who contributed to the growth of our school system will never die. Tilden Hen- dricks will be remembered by his friends as a loyal Shermanite. He resigned his po- sition as president of the Board of Educa- tion to become sheriff of Boone County in early winter. High School was established by special election in June, l9l5, by authority given to the old Sherman district Board of Education. The people voted five-to-one in favor of establishing a high school at Seth. This election also authorized a bond issue of ten thou- sand dollars for the purpose of erecting a frame building in the Thompson bottom at Seth. Before this increase in the educational program could be made effective. there came a great flood on August 9, l9l6, which washed away many homes, some school buildings, and several business establishments. Some people had to live in the existing school houses. The United States entered the World War on April 6, l9l7. The high school at Seth was forgotten. By l92l the citizens began to sense a need for a high school. The Sherman district Board of Education was required to pay ten dollars a month for each student who attended high schools in other counties from Sherman district. The people in the upper end of the district wanted the high school at Whitesville: people in the lower part of the district wanted it at Seth. In July, l923, the attorney general of West Virginia ruled that a high school had been established at Seth by vote of the people in 1915. The only thing necessary was that the Board of Education provide the necessary teachers, buildings, and equipment. A new grade school building was completed at Seth in the spring of 1924. In the fall of 1924 Sherman High School began its first year of instruction under the excellent direction of Olin C. Nutter as principal, and Miss Dora Atkinson as teacher. The enrollment numbered between 40 and 50 students. Classes were held in the building vacated by the grade school. In 1925, Miss Zela Moore joined the faculty, A. D. Bradford and J. R. Shaw came in 1926. This stands as quite a contrast to the 25 teachers now employed by the high school. On March 16, l928. Sherman High School moved into a new building which had been erected at a cost of Sl30,000. Many citizens shook their heads and complained that the 'new building was too large, was a waste of money, and would never be completely needed. But the school grew by leaps and bounds. By I933 the enrollment had increased to such an extent that the old graded school rooms had to be reoccupied as annex rooms. Now, six annex rooms are in use, some of them a mile away from the main building. Since the first year in l924, new courses such as chemistry, typing, bookkeeping. shorthand, journalism, manual training. and music have been added to the curriculum. During the first year of its existence the high school consisted of seventh. eighth and ninth grades. Each year thereafter another grade was added until it became a six-year, first- class high school in l929. In 1937 it became a member of the North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools. The students who attended Sherm'an High School from Racine and Whitesville in 1925 and l926 had to furnish their own transportation. The roads were bad and many of the stu- dents boarded at Seth. The transportation system began in the fall of l926 when two fifty- passenger busses were purchased by the Board of Education. Twelve busses now bring stu- dents to the high school. , Sherman High School has had only four principals-Olin C. Nutter, l924-283 Emmett Stine. 1928-37: M L. Mackey, I937-40: and John P. Jarrell. The growth of Sherman High School has been phenomenal. The first graduating class of l927 consisted of seven members. The class of l94l numbers 94. The graduates of Sherman are acquitting themselves creditably in life. The speaker of the West Virginia House of Delegates during the l94l ses- sionlwas a member of the first graduating class. Thirty-five men, our largest squad in years, reported for fall prac- tice. Of this group twenty-four earned the coveted Captain Kenneth Lamp played a brilliant game at end during the season and his berth will be hard to fill. The backfield loses only one man, Carl Jarrell, while reserves taking the places of Donald Kuhn, Willis Elkins, and Hubert Hughey Will have to extend them- selves to equal the record of these boys, w P 4 Mi iiffirig 1Ef:H3:::::M yxifi'f3k .pr X W , ,QA NJ :I-': Q f f z.: 1:-:wszzzf 0.1: ..,,.,. . . 33 2 2 if '74 in fi TP . ,'., A M ., .K f 2 gm-M .wiv , W M- wifk A. , + t gaslzeflmll With the best team in years, the Sherman Tide closed its basket- ball season with seven wins. The most spectacular victoryniwas scored over the DuPont Panthers in the consolation game of the Kanawha- Boone sectional tournament. ' 'i f- 5 :Q Only Hfteen boys reported to Coach Jeffreys for a tryout at the start of the season. Of these, ten men lettered. Four players lost by graduation were: Kenneth Lamp, center and high scorer with a total of 204 points: Carl Jarrell, captain and for- ward, who scored l9l points: Frank Vest, guard: and Guy Wilson, forward. The lettermen Were: Jarrell, Lamp, Richards, Goodwin, Meadows, Vaeley, Webb, Wilson, Vest, and Banks. E 'F uniofz High Tooffmlf The Sherman Junior High Little Tidew closed its season without a win. This in no way was an indication of the team's true ability for it was composed of a group of young men who were playing their Iirst year of football. Coach Clifford Coon sent out the call for junior high material early in the season and was abfe to recruit a team of about 23 players. This was a good showing for the first year Tidettes. Only three games were played during the season. In the first, Leewood Junior High, boasting a team that claimed the state championship. defeated the Shermanites, lZ-0. In the second game Whitesville-'was victorious by a small margin. Thehthird game took the little Tide to Leewood where they were defeated a third time. Epidemic cut the season short although live games were scheduled to be played. The team took part in the following tournaments: The Sectional Golden Gloves at South Charleston, The Regional Golden Gloves at Huntington, and the State A. A. U. meet in Charleston. Carl Bratton, the only man to be lost by graduation, won the State A. A. U. novice bantam weight title. Bill King, a junior, took the open-bantam crown. ' f Boxing as a new sport here will no doubt continue to be one of the most popular sports on the athletic program. The band has given many outdoor concerts on the lawn of the school, as well as the traditional Christmas and spring concerts. It has followed the football team throughout its schedule. The climax of a successful year was the Band Festival in which this group represented the school in Huntington. GLEECLUBS The Girls' Cilee Club is an organization that has set very high musical standards. The girls not only possess excellent voices, but also have the personality and stage presence needed for public performances. Their pro- gram of Christmas carols was one of the outstanding events of the year. They have appeared at all the concerts, and at many chapel programs. The Boys' Glee Club is one of the newer organizations which has pro- gressed very rapidly. The boys' and girls' glee clubs have combined many times to interpret the world's great musical compositions. ELEMENTARY BAND . The members of the Elementary Band never played before this school year. However, in the period of three months they were capable of playing music for public performances. Ap- proximately 650 students are transported each day to and from school on 13 buses. The average number of miles traveled each trip by each bus is 45. This system has been in use since 1926. The bus drivers are under the supervision of Clem White, the oldest driver in the service. The other drivers are B. E. Edleman, Earl Sapp, Curt Warren, Earl Vickers, V. W. Harless, Ward Courtney, Ed Shelton, Arlie Estep, R. E. Brandenburg, Watt Elkins, lsom Elrod, and Herb Pauley. VARMTY CLUB Very early in a young Shermanite's career he begins to Wonder if he will be one of those fortunates who makes the Varsity Club. It can be said Without a doubt that the Varsity Club nurtures the very pulse-beat of vivacious youth. Composed entirely of lettermen in football and basket- ball, it boasts a membership of tried and true athletes. The Varsity Club has as its president Ted Massey, a junior, and all-round athlete. Banks, better known as the school children's friend, has been one of the most staunch supporters of the high school since its beginning back in 1927. NB. D. , as he is fondly called by alumni and local friends, will be remembered for his active interest in the Tide, the Sherman Tattler, and all other phases of work in the high school. A book such as this would not be complete without some mention of the man who helped to make a greater Sherman. Charles W. Conner, superintendent of the Nellis Coal Corpora- tion, is another whose friendship has meant much to the institution. When the county unit was introduced by Governor Kump, it was Mr. Conner whose name was placed on the list of board members. While in that capacity he served diligently, ever keeping in mind the welfare of the youth of Boone County. Students and teachers will vouch for the fact that Mr. Conner is another whose name will long be remembered. He is ever willing to cooperate with the educational program of Boone County. David O. Garred, manager of the Red Parrot Coal Company stores, has been at Prenter since 1929. Mr. Cwarred is another of those loyal friends who can be depended upon to come through for the high school when called upon. His keen interest in the band has made him many friends among the members of the music department. lt can be said without a doubt that Sherman High School owes much to men like Dave Garred. E. B. Kennan came to Nellis in 1924 when The American Rolling Mills owned and operated the Nellis mines. At the present Mr. Ken- nan is cashier of the Nellis Coal Corporation which took over the Nellis workings. A native West Virginian whose boyhood home was in Nicholas County, Mr. Kennan is another whose keen loyalty to the high school has scored high favor among students and patrons. H. B. Morgan may be classed as a newcomer to Boone County, although he has been at Prenter as general superintendent of the Red Parrot Coal Company during the past six years. This in no way hindered his loyalty to the institution, for it was through his noble efforts that the Sherman Tattler has been able to forge ahead to the ranks of a first-class newspaper again. Boone County can point with pride to men like Mr. Morgan and his associates. It has been said that these men have been the bulwark on which a greater Sherman has been molded. f 4-41 A, .
