SUNNY DOEe PI BIT John and Loulse rubbed the t ars aw y br vcly nd w tched dm creaklng old wagon drawn by two lean, tlred hors s st rt along the rough, vlndlng road, Then Loulse turned to the llttle, house where there was s great deal of work to be done nd only hers lf, glrl of ten, to do lt The house was f r out on the pr lrle and there w sn't a ne1ghbor's house ln slght 1U any dlFLCt1OH But Loulse w s a brave llttle pl0DeeP glrl, o she set to work 1nd swept the rough floor There was only one room wltn loft above lt She washed the few d1Sh6S that h dnft be n broken It was mldsummer and terrlbly hot and dry The streams were ll drled up, and the wells were dry, everywhere Johnny's father lad to haul water for many mlles to water the llve stock When h1s father after water Johnny would usually go along wlth Sunny, h1s petcolt It was only a year slnce thew had left a nlce home ln the Last to to the pralrle country Here there was none of the comforts of that they had engoyed back 18 the East The nearest town was two drlve away, and now mother was 1ll,and father h d to drlve her to because no doctor could reach them otherwl e Loulse and Johnnl tW1HS and very small to stay alone three nlghts They had tnelr Natch, to stay wlth them, went come llfe days town were dog, had scoled hlm many tlmes for spendlng so much t1me wlth Sunny Bu Johnny had no boys to play wlth so all hls spare tlm was spent th1s way There hadn't been any ra1n for so long that all the grass for mlles across the pra1r1e was becomlng dead and dry NI ought to make a fire barrl r around the house and barn,Nf1ther told the famlly at supper one nlght 'How do you make a f1re barr1er9H Johnny asked Ul'd take the blg team and plow a palr of furrows ln a clrcle away out from the bulldlngs all the y round Then I'd go farther nd plow another palr of furrows Lround Then I'd be mlghty careful, but I'd burn the grass all dff the rlng of ground between the the ln lde furrows and the outslde one Then lf 1 grass f1re c me asweeplngnt would most llkely never get 1ns1de the burned of rlng Plonecrs have to do that every year to be safe,H f ther nswered Johnny d1dn't say anythlng but thought about lt agaln and agaln. Then the mornlng came and father and mother wert to the town to see the doctor.
