to untle my legs I had been doing thls while my captors were downstalrs One afternoon right after dlnner when the three men were no1s1ly playlng cards below I slipped quletly out through the broken w1ndow onto the porch roof and Jumped nolsele sl3 to the ground not far below Then with much difflculty I found the wav back to the main road and got a rlde from there home Nat I had been HISSCG, and when my car was found thev thought that I had been drowned Back in town I lm edlately went to the police station and told my story I begged the chlef to hurry before m escape was discovered and the gang ters had moved He was only too wllllng to comply It was then about three 1n the afternoon, so probably they did not know I was gone as they only came to glve us our meal I had to go back wlth the pollce to show them the way and of course I wa pleased to be able to be of servlce ln helplng capture the wldely sought crlmlnals When we quletly surrounded the house they were stlll apparently lgnorant of my fllght they were stlll playlng cards, They surrendered W1thOUt a b1t of trouble when they found the game was up On the war home I asked Louise Wlll18mS to tell me how she that she llved ln a large cit5 about two hundred mlles from here and that she had lnherlted a very large fortune from her uncle who had died She said that the same men we had gust captured had threatened her so her parents declded they would send her to vlsit her older slster in thls town so she could escape the threats But 1U valn, for 1n ome unknown way the gangsters learned of her departure and followed her She was unaware of th1s fact untll one day she was sketching down at the waterfront and the gangsters cornered her.
