A DREAM COME TRUE I was just dreaming of an exciting adventure in which I was the chief character when I heard a voice which seemed to come from a far distant region calling, WBob, are you going to lie there all day?W I have called you three times. You have barely time to get to the office at eight o'cloek. ' WAll right, all right,W I answered sleepily. nI'm coming.n All the time I was hurriedly dressing, eating my breakfast, and walking down the street I was thinking 'Oh, if I could only have an adventure like my dream last night. This town's so dead that it looks like a gray yard ' Little d d I realize how soon' my thoughts would ma+erialize Ever sine I had b n graduated from high school in th spring I had beer employ d as a cub reporter on th local paper, My task consistfd of uch things as gathering and rriting court reports, social rews ard tle like This morning about the middle of Iuly, was no TC etion I was kept busy running errands until about clev n when m boss, Lr Cartwright, call d me into his offi e 'Bob,W he ,a1d, 'I wait you to go to the dog how up on Plea ant Street nd bring We a good story on it W NYes s1r,' I r plied lor I was glad to get out in. the open air after running around 1I th hot city all the morning I went home, ate my di ner, borrow d Dad' c r and start d for Pleasant Street This was a quiet strc t about two miles away from the business di trict To reach it one had to pass the waterfront where there were many mpty warehouses I thoroughly engoyed my afternoon at the dog show and I get a story which I thought would plea e Mr Cartwright As I neared the old warehou es I slowed the motor dean to a scarcely audible hum o that I night watch th un's reflection on the water Approaching one of the most desolated of the old buildings I heard a fright ned but short cream I stopped the car and ran to the door wh ch was open n arly an inch. They very nervous and as it was my duty to keep the passengers at ease I asked them if they would like to have me flnd out the seriousness of the storm from the pilot Thls sug gestlon seemed to me t thelr approval, and so, stepping quickly to the connecting dovr I reach d for the knob, but found that one of th men h d T1 en and alr adj was at the door ahead of He calmly told no not to c ll out or to act surprlsed but gust sk the questlon as I planned I then noticed that the smaller of the two men was stand ing near the three regular passenger speaking in a low tone. Quickly realizing that dang r was at hand, but not knowlng what they could want as nothing of value was on beard, I turned to comply with the tall stranger and as hc opened the door for me I qHlCk1y kleked the button that I used when I needed help from the assistant pllot, thinking that thls m1ght put them on guard But my warning came a bit too 1 te to be of real help, serving only to warn but not to help, The tall stranger stepped rlght in behlnd me and before I could say a word quickly pl ced a revolver agalnst the pl1ot's back Their pl ns h d been perfect so far, helped along by storm, as the pilot had to glve all his attention to guiding great plane In brief words the man told the pilot that he wanted ship t ken b ek over the Mexican border and that he w ntod the the the the pllot also s h1s helper Slowly the pllot turned the plane, c reful to gainst the wlnd nd head d str lght for the Mexlcan flash of llght nlng l1t the sky followed by mighty keep border crash of thunder nd ll was suddenly in darkne s, confuslon, and then I was thrown agalnst the well while the co pilot struggled with the str neer When the llghts c me on, the co p1lot grabbed the 3tranger's gun wrich he h d dropped to +he flour The three regular pas engcrs were t klng care of the other gangster Me nwhlle the pllot w s he ding toward houston to the alr port nd gust s the men flnlshed tring up the g ngster we l nded Jo had w red the oollec to be waltlng for us when we l rd d L b y wer there when we rrlved fe at once turned them over t the pcllce nd I went to m partment, tlred by the n1ght's dv nture It was eftfrward learned th t th wen were dop p ddlers tryln to smuggle d oe acrns the Mexlo n line Marllyn Se vey . . , . - . to untle my legs I had been doing thls while my captors were downstalrs One afternoon right after dlnner when the three men were no1s1ly playlng cards below I slipped quletly out through the broken w1ndow onto the porch roof and Jumped nolsele sl3 to the ground not far below Then with much difflculty I found the wav back to the main road and got a rlde from there home Nat I had been HISSCG, and when my car was found thev thought that I had been drowned Back in town I lm edlately went to the police station and told my story I begged the chlef to hurry before m escape was discovered and the gang ters had moved He was only too wllllng to comply It was then about three 1n the afternoon, so probably they did not know I was gone as they only came to glve us our meal I had to go back wlth the pollce to show them the way and of course I wa pleased to be able to be of servlce ln helplng capture the wldely sought crlmlnals When we quletly surrounded the house they were stlll apparently lgnorant of my fllght they were stlll playlng cards, They surrendered W1thOUt a b1t of trouble when they found the game was up On the war home I asked Louise Wlll18mS to tell me how she that she llved ln a large cit5 about two hundred mlles from here and that she had lnherlted a very large fortune from her uncle who had died She said that the same men we had gust captured had threatened her so her parents declded they would send her to vlsit her older slster in thls town so she could escape the threats But 1U valn, for 1n ome unknown way the gangsters learned of her departure and followed her She was unaware of th1s fact untll one day she was sketching down at the waterfront and the gangsters cornered her.
