i Q Students Gain First Hand Experience I think Journalism l is fun. lt's a good experience if you like working with people, stated Sherman High School sophomore Susan Scog- gms. The world of mass media is one that is constantly growing and creat- ing new job opportunities as it expands. Students interested in occupae tions relating to newspapers, magazines, radio, and television were given first hand experience by participating in the Journalism l class which was structured to resemble a daily newspaper office. The class was designed to teach students the basic principles of how newspapers radio and television programs were assembled, Students were also given instructions on how to write effective articles and the responsibility of publishing the monthly Hi-Talk. Actually seeing their own copy and layout designs in print gave stu- dents incentive to try harder in obtaining quality work. Seeing yourself in print is the fun side of journalism stated Mrs. Paula Morgan, Jour- nalism lnstructor. Given the choice of taking the class over, sophomore Teresa Beard commented I believe I would do it again because it gives you the opportunity to meet other people and it's a challenge. 1. PUBLICATIONS Pubhcatlons Offer Hardworkg 0 Personal Sattsfactlon A Being on staff may be a lot of fun, hard work and personal satisfaction, but l know we all spend a great deal of time at the Community Brick Wall stated junior John Hill when asked about the work of Publications staff. Working with a self supporting budget of approxi- mately S24,500, the Publications staff busied itself with selling 1,650 books and 60 pages of ads to pay for the 1979 Athenian. Seeming to be at a monumentous project staffers sweated over deadlines, ad sells, mail outs, identi' fied pictures, carried cameras as if they were appendages, turned rooms upside down looking for lost copy, banged their heads against the Commu- nity Brick Wall and found themselves taking up room and board in A133.
