FOREIGN LANGUAGE 6 . Awe 1. if 2. I Cultural Studies Provide nderstanding Reasons varying from college entrance requirements to just for the fun of it gave students the incentive to participate in the foreign language program. Back to Basics Plus Drilling verbs, nouns, commas, adjectives, prepo- sitions, spelling, punctuation and literature into the minds of students was the Sherman High School English Departments goal this year. Aside from the traditional English I, ll, Ill, IV, and Advanced Placement, a college English course was offered on the Sherman High School campus for the first time. College English was designed to function as a col- lege class. Students attended classes three days a week for two semesters, one for literature and one for grammar and composition. The course not only helped prepare students for the college curriculum but it gave them the opportunity to receive college credits. Senior Karen Hendricks finds college English worthwhile because l'm beginning to comprehend what a college classroom is like and what to expect when l go to college. Sophomore Nancy Nicholson enjoys English this year because of the novels we are reading, and grammar is a little easier this year. Senior Mark Helms has learned how to read poetry and howto enjoy Beowolf stories. 1. Mark Mask has a startled look on his face as Miss Mildred Ben- son returns test papers. 2. Scott Holland and Melody Fine go over test grades with Miss Barbara Radar. 3. Mrs. Tonya Brown pas- ses out daily assignment to Beth Sills and David Fogle. 4. Mrs. Margie Wilson explains an autobiography to Bob Bowers, Laurie Flanigan, and Becky Nurre. 3, sa p., 2 10 Academics 'lllsiu-.funn-.,,,,,,

i Q Students Gain First Hand Experience I think Journalism l is fun. lt's a good experience if you like working with people, stated Sherman High School sophomore Susan Scog- gms. The world of mass media is one that is constantly growing and creat- ing new job opportunities as it expands. Students interested in occupae tions relating to newspapers, magazines, radio, and television were given first hand experience by participating in the Journalism l class which was structured to resemble a daily newspaper office. The class was designed to teach students the basic principles of how newspapers radio and television programs were assembled, Students were also given instructions on how to write effective articles and the responsibility of publishing the monthly Hi-Talk. Actually seeing their own copy and layout designs in print gave stu- dents incentive to try harder in obtaining quality work. Seeing yourself in print is the fun side of journalism stated Mrs. Paula Morgan, Jour- nalism lnstructor. Given the choice of taking the class over, sophomore Teresa Beard commented I believe I would do it again because it gives you the opportunity to meet other people and it's a challenge. 1. Susan Roman types news copy for the HieTalk. 2. Darla Hames, Shelly Kirby, Lori Burchfield, and Teresa Beard work on Hi-Talk stories. 3.
