Athenian Sales Set All-Time Record Steve Jonse and Pam Martin work on preparing index for the class sections. The 1977-78 Staff Class has published four newspapers and the Athenian this year. A lot of hard work goes into the newspaper and yearbook. All layouts for both are done by the Staff. The candid shots are taken by the SHS photographers. The 1977-78 photographers are: Paula Lacy, Khris Miller, Bobby Evans, Ken McBryde, Judy Wright, and Mark Simon. All stories in the Hi-Talk are written by Journalism I and II students. The newspaper that ranges from 8 to 22 pages is printed by the Denison Herald. Editor for the Hi-Talk is Judy Adair. The Athenian Staff produced a 356 page Athenian, with nine pages colored, the first Athenian with four color since 1972. Athenian Staff members were asked why they took Journalism a second year. They react as follows: Laura Hayden, “I like meeting people.” Becky Booher, “I liked working on the paper last year, and I thought I would have fun working on the yearbook. Journalism I Students Face New Challenge “Journalism I has improved in accepting responsibilities since last year,” stated Paula Morgan, instructor. This year’s class is set up to resemble a publishing company’s system. The students have their own titled position such as editors, typists, and proofreaders and they are required to take full responsibility of their position for six weeks. Students clock in at the beginning of class and out at the end. They also receive a check at the end of each week. The pay check, along with the textbook, test, and ambition are used to determine a student’s final grade. This is an excellent way to keep the students working. Their minds become more creative and that enables them to think and write quickly, use better interview techniques, and work better with class members along with accepting responsibilities. The Sherman High School Hi-Talk is written mainly by the Journalism I students. Each story a student writes has his byline printed above the story (although this is not the proper professional procedure) to help the student have confidence and incentive to write more stories. Journalism I students in first and fourth periods were asked why they took journalism and what they got out of it. Their comments follow below: John Hill, “It’s a lot of hard work, but I enjoy it. George Townsend, I get a headache and a full-time schedule, but I enjoy it.” Debbie Johnson, I like the experience of working on a paper and writing stories.” Edward Davis, “Journalism is mainly a lot of fun to me and it is also very educational and I’d like to continue in the studies of this interesting field. Lori McGraw, “Aid in business and writing ability. Journalism is not all fun and games. A paper is not something you can put together in one day, it takes time and a lot of effort. Journalism is a lot of hard work, but the students can work and enjoy themselves at the same time. Debbie Johnson and Debra Bennett discuss story headlines. Ann Sheppard, Chris Taylor, John Burnett, Bruce Lowing, Bobby Jackson, Chuck Vestal, begin Algebra assignment. Brad Bringhurst completes class assignment. Math Department Expands Course Range The Sherman High School Mathematics department offers a wide range of math courses to serve different levels of ability. The Math courses offered at SHS are: Fundamentals Of Math I, and II, Algebra I, II, Geometry, Trigonometry, Analytical Geometry, Analysis, Survey of Math, History of Math, Number Theory, Speed Math, and the newest course. Consumer Mathematics. Consumer Mathematics is being offered for the first time this year. The course is designed to introduce students to the free enterprise system. Juniors and seniors are eligible to take this course if they have completed Algebra I or six quarters of Introductory Algebra. Students enrolled in any math course were asked if the math course they were enrolled in helped them in any way. The comments follow: John Hill, “More than helping me understand math, geometry helps me to think logically. Tammy Burrow, It has helped me a lot, and I like the teacher.” Ken McBryd, It helps in life’s situations, sometimes.” Cyrus Wesley, I like the teacher and I learn to manage my money.” Sophomore students look above for help on math quiz.
