Journalism I Students Face New Challenge “Journalism I has improved in accepting responsibilities since last year,” stated Paula Morgan, instructor. This year’s class is set up to resemble a publishing company’s system. The students have their own titled position such as editors, typists, and proofreaders and they are required to take full responsibility of their position for six weeks. Students clock in at the beginning of class and out at the end. They also receive a check at the end of each week. The pay check, along with the textbook, test, and ambition are used to determine a student’s final grade. This is an excellent way to keep the students working. Their minds become more creative and that enables them to think and write quickly, use better interview techniques, and work better with class members along with accepting responsibilities. The Sherman High School Hi-Talk is written mainly by the Journalism I students. Each story a student writes has his byline printed above the story (although this is not the proper professional procedure) to help the student have confidence and incentive to write more stories. Journalism I students in first and fourth periods were asked why they took journalism and what they got out of it. Their comments follow below: John Hill, “It’s a lot of hard work, but I enjoy it. George Townsend, I get a headache and a full-time schedule, but I enjoy it.” Debbie Johnson, I like the experience of working on a paper and writing stories.” Edward Davis, “Journalism is mainly a lot of fun to me and it is also very educational and I’d like to continue in the studies of this interesting field. Lori McGraw, “Aid in business and writing ability. Journalism is not all fun and games. A paper is not something you can put together in one day, it takes time and a lot of effort. Journalism is a lot of hard work, but the students can work and enjoy themselves at the same time. Debbie Johnson and Debra Bennett discuss story headlines. Stacy Boatman, LaSandra Herpeche, and Anne Ray Harman begin pre- Karen Foster begins to lay out newspaper, paring for interview. 15

Foreign Languages Enrich Vocabulary The French classes at Sherman High School strive to teach all French students the basics through film strips and tapes. Learning the cultures of France and other French speaking countries is very important. Games and a variety of techniques are used to show the differences between America and France. French II and III, however, are a little more complicated. They go deeper into the cultures of French, grammar, and literature. French students were asked why they took French. Their reactions follow: Michelle Minor, “It’s an interesting course, and it is graceful to speak.” Terri Gentry, “I heard that it will make it easier to get into college. Spanish students were asked how Gary Walsh, “Needed a foreign language for college.” they felt about Spanish and why they Tena Walton, “Because I plan to major in music in college and I needed took the class. Their reactions follow: it.” Kathy Pierce, “I didn’t want to take French or Latin so I took Spanish, I thought I would get more out of it. Sally Harper, “I want to learn to speak Spanish.” Robert Abbott, “I had to have a foreign language and Spanish was the easiest one.” Leigh Anderson concentrates on Latin assignment. Mrs. Donna Kumler explains Latin assignment to Karen Cobbs, Mike Mitchell, Cindy Boat-right and Chris Louderback. Miss Barbara Jarvis explains Spanish lesson to first period. U

Athenian Sales Set All-Time Record Steve Jonse and Pam Martin work on preparing index for the class sections. The 1977-78 Staff Class has published four newspapers and the Athenian this year. A lot of hard work goes into the newspaper and yearbook. All layouts for both are done by the Staff. The candid shots are taken by the SHS photographers. The newspaper that ranges from 8 to 22 pages is printed by the Denison Herald. Editor for the Hi-Talk is Judy Adair. The Athenian Staff produced a 356 page Athenian, with nine pages colored, the first Athenian with four color since 1972. Athenian Staff members were asked why they took Journalism a second year.
