One of the most important inventions of man has been the discovery of the use of words. Without this communication we would be on little more than an animal level, for it is this very communication with each other that has brought about a reverence for life, for all life, and for an understanding of the human heart, of which Faulkner spoke. It is this very use of words - both spoken and written, both our own and those of the great in litera- ture - which is the concern of the English depart- ment. lt is also this knowledge of the correct use of the word that will give depth to your thinking, cour- age for your actions, and understanding of your- selves and of your fellow students. You have only as many ideas as you have words with which to express those ideas. It is not enough barely to communicate with your fellow man, a sav- age can do this. It is necessary today that you do more: use your language proudly and correctly. Only then do you express your best selves. This is what the study of English is all about! lt is not always fun, but if you choose to make it so, it is always rewarding. ,gig his Mrs. Martha Aston explains the purpose of modern poetry and drama. . Journalism Beneficial Subiecf Journalism is a profitable and beneficial subiect that each student would appreciate. lt teaches the student and equips him with the ability to better understand his writing and speaking. Often the journalism student must act as a repre- sentative in selling products, such as ads for the paper and yearbook. Therefore, he must be able to -Ric Tara Tracy, Suzanna Rodgers, and Larry Ewing look through mag zines to get ideas for stories. 0- N. Carol Moss, Paul Randall and Stephanie Kirk work on lay- outs for Athenian. Mrs. Paula Morgan explains ad layouts for Hi-Talk to Debbie Honea. sell himself, have the ability to speak to a cus- tomer, and be influential in the customer's choice. ln Journalism, one learns everything there is to know about writing, how to put together a news story, how to produce a column, write an editorial, feature story, how to color up a story, and much more. Your vocabulary is increased a great deal when in journalism, which is always beneficial. Your ter- minology is something people are attracted to in a first appearance. Learning how to work with people and how to cope with them will help you throughout your life. Journalism is a course with this in mind.
