L'V-fr,-'f K 'M N' ,kfkw ' f g ,:- .. ,w 1. 1 HISTORY OF SHERMAN HIGH SCHOOL One day, the turning of these pages will release to your mind memory of your days at Sherman High School, you will then think of the history of your school. The high school was organized in 1891 on the third floor of the Washington building. In 1898 the high school was moved to the Franklin building for one year. Then the first regular high school building was built in 1899. This building was burned in 1907. In 1909 the course was lengthened from three years to four years, and as a result there was no graduating class that year. For several years there were two graduations a year, one at mid-term and one in June. This was abandoned, be- cause it was an unnecessary expense, and no good result came of it. When the old junior High School building was built, the Board said that it would be sufficient for twenty years, however, in 1917 it was necessary to move into our present junior High building, then the High School, with three of the grades in high school and one in junior High, In 1925 the high school building was increased again, and they put all four grades in high school. In 1946 the course was once again lengthened, putting five grades in high school and leaving the seventh grade in grade school. In 1954 work was started on the present High School building. The class of 1955 was the first class to graduate from the new school. The old high school building was changed to the present Junior High. We know that Sherman High School is not the largest, but we do consider it the best. Our inspiration is in the past, our duty is in the presentg and our hope is in the future. May the future Sherman High School graduates step into the world with that ole SHS spirit that carries on till the game is over! Scheduling stu- dents, securing supplies, caring for our building, guiding and teaching, and providing many other services are among the obvious duties you perform . . . but we recognize a greater value and service: that of guiding us, inspir- ing us, making us want to be satisfied with nothing less than a job well done. The hope of the world lies in young men and women who will do something about the problems which they see rather than to complain about their fate. St. John Mr. St. John, Manager of the Lone Star Gas Company, father of two children attending the Sher- man Schools. and graduate of Texas A8cI, was elected to the Board of Education in 1959. gourd af Mr. Roberts, vice president of the Board of Education and former president from 1956 to 1960, has served on the board since 1950. Father of two children, he had the privilege of awarding Judith Ann a diploma in 1959. His younger daughter is enrolled in school this year. He is vice pres- ident of Roberts, Sanford, and Taylor, a wholesome firm, Mr. Stanly Roberts, Jr. Mrs. R. J. Bell Mrs. Bell, graduate of North Texas State College, and former teacher in Texas schools, became a member of the board in 1958, In 1960 she was named Sherman's X5C'oman of the year. Mrs. Vaughan, elected to the board in 1960, attended Texas Woman's University. Her husband owns and operated Vaughan's De- partment Store. A daughter graduated in 1960g a son is in Jr. High. Mrs. John Vaughan l Dr. D. A. McCall Dr. McCall, graduate of Sherman High School, Austin College, and the Northern Illinois College of Optometry, has participated in many different civic projects. His two daughters are enrolled in Sherman Schools. Sducaf 2714 Dr. Williaiii B. Mize Dr. Mize, father of two children who at- tend Sherman schools, is president of the Board and is associated with the Medical 8: Surgical Clinic. He is a graduate of Wash- ington and Lee and Washington University Medical School. He joined the Board in 1955. Mr. Jaco was elected to the Board of Education in 1959. An athlete while in high school, Mr. Jaco has continued to have keen in- terest in athletic activities. He is a graduate of Sherman High School and has two children in the public schools. Joyful in that another milestone in our educational career has been achieved, sorrowful in that many of us are saying farewell to Sherman High School as we complete our high school careers. The Athenian, however, will keep fresh forever the happy memories of-Sherman High School and the many friends that were made here. Cherish this book through the years and it will be a happy reminder always of Sherman High School. Each of us who teaches always is filled with pride and satisfaction when he sees the progress that each of you makes from year to year through school. Habits, attitudes, and ideals that you acquire in school usually follow you through life. Make the most of your high school years in developing your mind, your body, and your spirit to the utmost so that you may take your rightful place in a free society. Walter Carpenter Mr. H. B. Onley came to Sherman High School in 1948. He has held many positions since that time as Athletic Business Manager and Treasurer of the Activity Fund. This year he was appointed to fill a new position, that of Assistant Principal of Sher- man High School. Sherman fl gh Selma! Staff These are the people who assist the principal and assistant principal in some of the administrative tasks: Mrs. Maurine Davis is the office manager. It is her job to put out bulletins, operate office machines as duplicating for teachers, operating the switch board and public address system, keeping the files and per- manent records, and taking care of school insurance. Mrs. Charlynne Elliott takes care of all the books in the library sees that they are all turned in on time, are in good condition, and there are a variety of books available to the students. Miss Nina Ferrill directs the activities at Sherman High School. sponsors the student council, arranges for the assembly programs, plans students activities. Miss Mary joe McNeely is in charge of records, reports, testing, vocational and college counseling. She keeps the students grades counsels with them on their choice of subjects. She keeps the student's attend- ance records, is in charge of permits, and helps girls with any problems that they might have whether personal or disciplinary matters. In our Sophomore and junior years she helped in counseling and social activities. Her biggest job was planning for the Seniors. She su- pervised in the ordering of class rings and invita- tions and helped plan our graduation. Our gratitude goes out to Miss Linton for helping us these three years. We are deeply grateful, and We will remember her in years to come, A long awaited dream came true for us this year when we became the Senior Class of 1961. The fruitsxof our many labors during the past years were realized, it was time for us to accept the responsibilities and joys of being Seniors. We were the loudest yellers in pep rallies, the hardest workers on school projects, and the biggest backers of our school. We set a standard which will be respected by classes in years to come. This year has been filled with much happiness for usg the thrill of using the Senior door and the joy of getting our Senior rings are just a few of the many wonderful things that have made this year one we shall always remember. The junior sponsors' job is not quite finished fo they still have the biggest job of planning witl the Seniors next year. How long are school years? As a group let us look back and recollect some of the l events we have experienced together. Remember when our junior High School burned? We gained by our loss in realizing how much it meant to be together. No wonder our class has such spirit! Remember, too, how we all backed our 9th grade basketball team and they won the district for us. Since we entered high school our spirit has been present everywhere. We have had outstanding students representing us in scholastic organizations, sports, band, cheerleaders, Variety Show, Hi-Talk, Student Council, and participating in every phase of school life. We can be proud to be a part of our Class. Years from now we will remember that as Sophomores Homecoming Queen was revamped to Football Sweetheart, as juniors, the class favorites and royal parties were restyled into Who's Who and our marvelous football team was composed of many of our classmates.
