The structure of a word is begun in the first grade. Seeing likenesses and differences in wordsg hearing what the word sounds like is important in beginning spelling. Spelling cannot be separated from reading and writ- ing. Spelling is a part of the reading program and the communication arts: reading, speaking and writing.
