The school's programprovides for each of its pupils, according to his ability or environ- ment, the opportunity to develope, and achieve to his capacity mentally, physically, socially, morally and spiritually. W Each year a pre-school clinic is held, at which time parents bring their children to school for a visit. These children meet the teachers, tour the building so that they will not be total strangers when they come to school in the fall. Parents are given a hand- book titled And Now To School. This handbook is prepared especially for the parents of these chil- dren. In this way a working relationship is estab- lished between the home and school. He learns there are many kinds of reading: reading for pleasure, for information, for growth in study skills, and for literary appreciation. As the child grows so does his horizon. Social studies is a de- velopmental spiraling program beginning at home and spiraling outward until the child has studied Texas, United States, and the world. As the children grow, two groups of four pegs be- come 2 x 4 and is meaningful to a child. How many things do you see? If two are taken away, how many are left? The structure of a word is begun in the first grade. Seeing likenesses and differences in wordsg hearing what the word sounds like is important in beginning spelling. And we, the 1958-59 Sophomore Class, feel that this year was no exception. We also feel that without the help of Juniors, Seniors, and faculty this year lwould not have been nearly as successful for us. If at any time we became confused or stepped out of line there lwere always the Seniors or juniors to help or set us back on our path. The week was begun with an assembly featuring skits on the theme of the week. The week in- cluded campus clean-up, election of best-groomed boy and girl of each class, speakers, and a dress-up day. Participation from the student body was excellent and the week was given a high evaluation by the faculty and students. 99 Mr. Louis Hanky, a newcomer to our faculty, had just completed a tour with the Navy when he came to S.H.S. He re- ceived his B.A. at Southeastern State Teachers College. He is a talented math teacher who also contributes to the social life of our school and is known to all of us as ML Sory's Shadow. Welcome to Sherman High School. I History and government present the student with the working tools and knowl- edge of the principles of American de- mocracy. Audio-visual aids, records, cur- rent magazines, reports from administra- tive officials and participation in the classroom to demonstrate the importance of every individual in the application of citizenship and responsibilities of freedom, Sherman High School offers a wide variety of subjects in mathematics to meet the needs and requirements for success- ful work in college or in whatever field one wishes to enter after graduation. In- terest is created by participation in mathe- matics clubs, in Interscholastic League events, and in making projects. Accel- erated classes are provided for those who desire a broader education. In all English courses, there is a broad reading program including classics, both ancient and moderng there is a constant emphasis upon effective writing and speaking. At each level in the accelerated classes, there is an enriched program in all areas of work with emphasis on experimental, creative, and critical writing. al' S Sherman High School offers two years of speech. Speech one and two are funda- mental classes offering fundamentals, original speaking, interpretative speaking, aww' debate, discussion, and a basic knowledge of special types of speaking. Speech three The Physical and Health Education pro- gram at Sherman High School places a great deal of emphasis on taking care of the human body. Exercise also plays an important part in the program. Competitive sports which are in season afford both boys and girls a chance to exercise and learn the fundamentals of playing well together. is a study of drama and dramatics. Speech four is a study of radio and television. Each student compiles, directs, and pro- duces three radio shows. Business courses offer a wide variety of subjects to prepare students for the business and commercial world. Typing Shorthand, Business Law, Bookkeeping Business English, and Office Practice are offered. X 4 c I l Distributive education is a vocational program especially designed to teach high school students the fundamentals of retail, wholesale, and service-selling businesses. The students work on a cooperative basisn with participating businessmenv usually going to school in the morning and working in a real job during the afternoon. I I ICT is designed for junior and senior students wishing to start an occupational trade training program while ,still in school. This includes such areas as car- pentry, auto mechanics, electrical, labora- tory technician, nursing, etc. A student who selects industrial cooperative train- ing goes to school a half day and works downtown a half day. 3. Here Biology students prepare for a future lab day. S Here instructions are given to students as they practice taking dictation and learn- ing the skills of the business world. Physics is designed so as to give the student a working knowledge of the laws, theories, and principles encountered in the everyday life. It is offered only to seniors. SW The satisfaction of creating things with the hands and, at the same time, learning a skill or trade are two of the primary purposes of the Industrial Arts Depart- ment. Vocational Agriculture is a trade'i school for boys who are interested in farming, raising livestock, and general agricultural practices. They make field trips to farms and ranches in the county to study recognized practices. The winner is kept secret until the half-time during the foot- ball game the night of Homecoming. She is then presented with a bouquet of roses and football by the team captain. This is the climax of the many homecoming activities which in- clude: pep rallies, elections, former Bearcat teams being honored, half-time skits and pro- grams, coronation of the Homecoming Queen, and a dance after the football game. The Sherman High School Chapter of the National Honor Society was granted a charter and was organized on April 15, 1935. Membership in this organization is one of the highest honors obtainable in Sherman High School. Students of junior and senior classification who have a B average scholastically are rated by the faculty on leadership, school service, and character. Those students who rate in the highest ten percent of their class in combined rating of the four qualities mentioned above are elected to membership.
