September 1954 was a big year for about 200 students that had graduated from grade schools to High School and the Class of 1958 were looking forward to the day when we would be big Seniors. The High School seemed very big to us and we were lost all year, because it was so crowded in the building. We had to sit at the back of the auditorium in the chicken roost. Let's face it, we were looked upon as the lowest thing in the school. Then came our great Freshman year and the school was split into Junior and Senior High. We were the big dogs in our second year of High School. We were the teachers' pets, the rulers of the two grades under us, and various other honors were granted us as the year progressed, the Seniors of 1958. We really enioyed this year, but we did feel slighted at being left behind in the move to Senior High School. Finally it came, the big move to High School. We were again the infants in a very grown up world. At least they felt like they were grown up. We adjusted rather slowly, as we were used to doing pretty much as we felt like doing. When we finally settled down, we realized we were a part of a wonderful group-Sherman High School student body. At the end of a strenuous year, we were promoted to big Juniors. Our Junior year was much better than our Sophomore one, as we were not considered babies. It went pretty fast, too, since we were thinking of the day in the fall of 1957 when we would get our Senior Rings and officially be Seniors-The Class of 1958. It finally arrived and we loved every minute of being Seniors in the big school. We, of course, yelled the loudest in pep rallies, clapped the loudest in assemblies, and worked the hardest on school proiects. We were glad when graduation came, but we kind of hated to leave. As we leave, we also leave behind the facts that the Senior Class of 1958 is the BIGGEST and the BEST class ever to graduate from Sherman High School. l ,,, , ABRAHAM ALEMAN Games Club 555 Football 55, 575 Basketball Manager 565 Track 555 Outdoor Sportsman Club 555 Spanish Club 555 Parlia- mentarian of Homeroom 565 Baseball Team 57, 585 Domino Club 575 Field and Stream Club 58, Vice President 58, DON ALLISON CAROL ADAMS Band 55, 56, 58, Maiorette 585 Homeroom Vice President 565 Homeroom Secretary 585 Garden Club 585 Twirling Club 555 Bridge Club 57, Secretary 575 Spanish Club Secretary 56, 575 Dean's Office Assistant 585 Junior Dramatic Club 565 Debate Club 585 Variety Show 555 Future Teachers of America 56, 575 Future Homemakers of America 58. CLASS OF 1959 JUNIOR CLASS OFFICERS Jackie Baker, President, Norman Groves, Vice President, Maridelle Hutt, Secretary, James De Berry, Reporter. Junior High opened its doors to us as eighth graders, causing us to miss all the glory of being little seventh graders and the satisfaction of gaining the most attention. After graduating from the eighth grade, we became the Seniors of Junior High. By now we knew the ropes and were loaded with prestige. We even had the best trio in school- The Three Barefoots -John Dannel, piano, Barbara Ray, trombone, and Jimmy Blankenship, steel guitar. They were to become famous, even through our Sophomore year and Sophomore Class meetings. When we arrived in Senior High, we were compelled to take a step down- ward. Our new title The Babies, wasn't too flattering, but we soon became used to it. The massive build- ing seemed endless. Everyone was running frantically through the halls searching for classrooms. Boy, were we lost! Now we had to give up childish things and grow up a little bit. lt took time, but it was worth it. As we look back on our Sophomore year, we shudder to think we ever acted like we did. From Sophomore to Junior is a big jump. Graduation came before we knew it and we were Juniors, AT LAST! ln fact, we feel like we know al- most as much as the Seniors. We look forward to next year with great anticipation, We will be Seniors. After four long years, The Senior Class of l959 will be Seniors. The Class of 1960, having been the first class to go all the way Through Junior High, feels very privi- leged. Everyone was completely dazzled by the way Junior High operated, but we did not get away with quite as much as we did in grade school. Everyone tried to the best of his ability to have the very best record and tried to be looked upon with respect. Although we were rowdy, we still proved ambitious. By the time we were in the eighth grade, we seemed to calm down a small bit, but that never kept us from having a good time. We were gaining power all the time, we now had control over the seventh grade class. When we obtained the highest peak in Junior High-the privilege of being the top-dogs, we really felt great. At the first of school we had so many privileges we were beside ourselves, thinking we were about the most wonderful bunch of kids in the.world. This ceased within a couple of months, as we were told we weren't the greatest people in the world. This never seemed to stand in our way, though. This year our little world completely changed. We moved to High School. We were scared silly at first, but we soon found it was a good place to be. I don't believe anything has ever been so hard for us before as adiusting to this school's rules and regulations. It wasn't that we at Junior High didn't have the same rules, It was iust that we never obeyed them before. Soon, however, we learned that it wasn't lady-like or gentle- man-like to go through the halls at a ninety mile rate, chew gum, knock others around, or to scream at the top of our lungs during the five minute break between classes. We learned not to lay books on the Bearcat Table, go through the Senior Door to the auditorium, and move during the school song. Although we weren't too happy with this school at first, we now love, appreciate, and respect it. When we are Seniors-the Class of 1960-we hope we can be as wonderful as the Class of 1958 has been.
