NEVERTHELESS, THE FUTURE OF THE BOOK IS KNOWN, IT WILL SERVE AS A REMINDER OF THE YEAR 1948-1949 AT SHERMAN HIGH SCHOOL- A REMINDER OF WORK HOURS AND PLAY HOURS. MOST OF ALL IT NVILI, BE A REMINDER OF WHAT PROBABLY HAS BEEN ONE OF THE BEST YEARS THE STUDENTS OF SHERMAN HIGH SCHOOL HAVE EVER HAD. LIFE AT SHERMAN HIGH SCHOOL DURING A CENTENNIAL YEAR IS OUR THEME, CHOSEN NOT ONLY BECAUSE THE CLASS OF 1949 BECAME SENIORS DURING THE CITY OF SHERMAN'S CENTENNIAL YEAR, THUS MAKING THE EVENTS OF OUR SCHOOL YEAR PARALLEL THOSE OF AN ACTIVE YEAR OF CITY-WIDE CELEBRATION, BUT ALSO BECAUSE OUR HIGH SCHOOL, LIKE OUR CITY, IS STEEPED IN TRADITION. We believe that from humble beginnings come noble achievementsg Sherm:m's advancement from tl small pioneer community to an Athens of Texas, a city in which at one time five institutions of higher learning were operated, a city identified with fine musicianship, to an industrial center with its manufacturing plants and mills is democracy made tangible. XVe select as our modern pioneer, Mr. Rob Piner. dearly beloved of all Sherman, young and old. We insist a modern pioneer - because Sherman High School to him is not foreign ground. An appearance before the Junior Historians is the occasion on which this picture was made possible. Therefore, because of the pioneers' gilt to the eitizens of today and tomorrow and particularly because ot' Mr. Piner's personal contributions, we take pride in dedicating this volume to them. 5 N5 37 if EE Q ,im Speaking of Pictures qJUs'1' Fon FUNQ Buster Ray, Stanley Wake- ham, and Jerry Waddle bor- row the latest in transport- ation to view the Paris par- ade ...... T. A. President, Mrs. I-Ianchette, and Mr. Davis. tBe1owJ Mrs. Hanchette and her daughter, Nina Elizabeth, pay an- other visit to S. H. S. iw-Q2 NWT? The accomplishments in the year 1948-49 of the ex- ecutive committee of the Sherman High School Parent Teacher Association and its three hundred forty-three members, with their competent president, Mrs. M. J. Hanchette, have planted seed from which great things are sure to grow. The parents and teachers worked together, enduring the wind, mist, and rain during the football season. From football concessions came S1,739.79, making it possible for the association to present the student body with 81000.00 for the Student Activity Fund, this was the special project for the year. Other donations worthy ot' mentioning were 325.00 to The Sherman Anti-Polio Cam- paign, and the purchase of a 310.00 Tuberculosis Bond. Other than donations. the association had the pillows re- novated for the football stadium at the cost. of S8199-50. By the end of the year, the remaining proceeds from the year's work will have been spent for the full benefit of the student body. 9 SUPERINTENDENT Another one of the many basketball trophies Won by the girls' team is presented to Mr. Landolt for the school by Lorraine Cain, team captain. Superior is the rating of Sherman's school admin- istration according to the evaluation report. Administrative efficiency accompanied by an always friendly smile has been Mr. C. D. Landolt's passport to evcryone's heart. During the past year he has endeared himself even more to students and 'faculty by his untir- ing efforts to better the Sherman schools. High goals are not always popular ones, and the courage of both the Board of Education and Mr. Lan- dolt in setting high goals to be attained for the Sherman Schools set a pace for Sherman's second century. 10 ...PRINCIPAL i t X f i S .. Dr. Southerland ol' the Hogg Further repousible for the superior quality of Sher- man High's administration is Mr. Bryon Davis. A person always alert to what will mean a better and happier school, Mr. Davis finds time not only to at- tend to his present duties but also to study and prepare frequent reports and suggestions for things that will keep Sherman High on the move. As quick to praise as to reprimand, constantly on the lookout for a hidden talent or interest in every stu- dent Mr. Davis can be best described by a student com- ment heard this year. Why, I just like to go into his of- fice and sit and talk. ll Foundation of the University of Texas is introduced to an assembly by lVl1'. Davis. OUR FACULTY. . 12 MR. Gradually it grew: the business staI'il', under Carolyn's super- vision, acc-omplished the impossible by topping' easily the amount and number ol' advertisements sol-:l in previous years. The camera, too, played its part throu,Q'h the football season at games, pep rallies. and the l'aris parade. Class pictures were made, and just before the Christmas holi- days, orders were taken for books. When picture proofs began coming' in the first of the year, pages started assuming an aetual annual appear- anee. Club photographs, favorites' pictures, and many snapshots were made. ln April, printing' of the book was begun: as the books were sent to the binder, a feeling' oi' tension mounted in the Athenian office. Typist Mary Frances Wood. Guion, Carolyn, and Miss Sim waited impatiently. They were rewarded when, on May 19, the books, records, in pictures and type, ol' the sehool year I9-18-I9-19, were handed out on schedule. The HI-TALK Published once a month by a 'staff of students selected by the sponsor, Miss McCoy, the school newspaper prints club, class, sport, and general news bulletins besides one or more pages of fea- tures. ltopl The editors: Wanda Woodward, Patsy Mc- Clure, Jean Kurrus, Anna Biggerstaff, Jane Young. tcenterl The editor-in-chief, Anna Biggerstaff. tbottom! True to the tradition of Sherman's earliest sett- lers, modern dress. food. and music are laid aside to make way for jeans and aprons, regular chuck- wagon chow, and square dances, much like the ones to which Great Uncle Willie squired the rich widow. If the calendar had said 1848 instead of 1948, no one would doubt that he is watching a party of the fabulous forties, nineteenth century style.
