Um 5 Once more the ATHENIAN makes its appearance to present in word and picture the pattern of high school life in Sherman High School forthe 1943-1944 session Once more the Editor and members of the Staii' View the product of their handiwork in the light of its reception, by their fellow students. l congratulate the student body and the faculty upon the way in which each has carried on in the face of disrupting forces of both an emotional and a physical nature. Of the anxieties you have individually experienced, I have not for a day been unmindful, and for your spirit of cooperation I have at all times been profoundly grateful. I trust that, when peace shall have been restored, each of you may be able to say that you have made a definite and measurable contribution for the good of all. Sincerely, QSignedJ R. L. Speer, Superintendent P' -...ar 'V I I f I To the Students of Sherman High School: ' You are'T:o be congratulated for your many accomplishments dur- ing the past year as students of Sherman High School. When I think of your contribution to your school and your community, I am proud to have had the privilege of working with you. Youth today is being criticized from many angles. N0 doubt you do have your problems, and doubtless there is some room for criticism. When a careful analysis is made, how- ever, I know that each generation of young people is better than the pre- vious one. Help keep it so! Within a very short time, our Seniors of 19-14 will be leaving Sher- man High School. The entire faculty and I wish for you the very best in life. May you succeed in your every worthwhile ambition. Vx Joe Joiner receives the football tro- phy from Mr. McDaniel, Superinten- dent of Denison High School, during a pep rally before the bi-district game with Highland Park. Denison Champions of District 5AA Won the trophy last year, but was forced to relinquish the title this season to the Bearcats. Joe Cecil Newbill lf, fl, af 1 V f x Head Omolrundro Paul lillis On October 8 the Bearcats traveled to Bonham to take on the Purple Warrior's. The half time lead was 13-0 and the Cats continued the on- slaught to drub the home team 40-0. The game featured the Cats second team, and it definitely made Sherman the dark horse of the district. Newloill and Joiner scored ai pair of touchdowns each while Pelly and Kegans marked up one a- piece. g v- , Back, Second letter Senior Mack Thompson W lgnli, Second letter Senior Guard, Second letter Senior Hack, Necond letter Senior lt Highland Parks powerful Scotties came to Sher- man October 15 confident of an easy Victory. The Scots started the game off with a bang, scoring on the third play of the game on a pass from Donley to Layne who lateraleil to Collins. Collins ran the remaining yardage to pay dirt. But the Cats came back quickly, tying the game up with an off tackle smash by Riley. The Cats took a ft S half time lead of 18-1-1, but the Scots, sparked by their all-state tailback, Bobby Layne, drove into Q ' 3 L Bearcat territory in the fourth quarter and scor- ' S ed to set the game on ice 21-18. However, the Cats came back in the second half, displaying' a powerful running at- tack and scoring' two more touchdowns to beat the Leopards 20-0. The Cats, riddled by injuries and without the services of two all-district men had taken their second district game and made one more step toward the district cliampionship. IMAX, L ,....... .. .iwmdm wmkml 1 i...i. ln their best game oi' the season the Bearcats mauled Paris 27-6 on November 12. The Cats played near flawless ball in every quarter to take their third district game and establish them- selves as the favorites of the district. Newbill, Stark, Pelley, Riley, and Kegans ripped holes through the Paris line at will while Joiner and Thompson snagged many passes. Tucker played his best game ol' the season and established hime self as one of the districts best tackles. 3'5 N? i ,, ,V,:5i,ga 4' 'E12iif1 ' ,Qwef , , ,Y ,xiii M s-swf.. f , swf wg-fig wg. .1 f vida f le- A 4' 5,3 ww vw., Q, V sages , - ,. we if Q:-..:.:h A . 3 .s , , Q ..:. 5 if J, Howard Tucker Tackle, Second Letter, Junior Glen Carruth Guard, Second Letter, Junior Neil Kliener Back, First Letter, Junior Bert Sherron Tackle, Second Letter, Senior I Joe Joiner Corky Totten On November 25 the Bearcats took on their old rivals, the Denison Yellowjackets in the district's most important game.
