Award Robert Vick Manager Hill Newell Manager FHQ Team First Team Backs First Team Line B -I-Cdmf Kittens Sunset---Q0 Sherman---O fl-iereb The Bearcats went into their first game of the season favored to win although greatly outweighed and handicapped by facing a much more experienced club. Rated fifth of the five Dallas ball clubs, the Bisons were out for the sports writers' scalps. Using power plays all the way, they took the ball game--- but it was gratifying to see that the new Cats still had the old Bearcat fight until the last whistle. Wichita Falls---3,9 Sherman---O Cllwerel The Bearcats were again badly outplayedg however, the veteran opposition, who were state finalists of 1937 were thrown for losses on several occasions by the fighting Cats. Pelly's beautiful punts Were far superior to those of the opposing booters, most of them 60 yards or over. The punt returning of Holder was largely responsible for keeping the ball in Sherman territory most of the game. Hayden Pitman, a very promising tackle, suffered a torn ligament which kept him virtually inactive the rest of the season despite several game attempts to play. McKinney---40 Sherman---'l Q Cl-lerel The McKinney Lions came to Sherman with high hopes ofa state Championship. The Cats, favorites in spite of their early season record, playing football with their heads up, scored in the first five minutes of the game using trick plays that kept opponents guessing. Knowles, - 240 lb. guard, and Captain Caraway led their charges to a touchdown in the next five minutes, tieing the score. Another Lion touchdown left the score 13 to 7 at the half. Thrill of the game: An S5 yard gallop by H. K. Bean on the kick off. Using power plays and daring passes, the Lions staged a whirlwind finish. Masonic Home---7 Sherman---Q0 CHereD For the first time of the season, the Bearcat team was clicking as a whole. The Masons were favored to win by a large score, having two All State men in their starting line-up, and two on the reserve team. Probably the deciding factor of the ball game was the inspired playing of the Bearcat forward wall who repeatedly broke through and smothered the fam- ed Mason passing attack, usinga five-man line. During the fourth quarter, 'the little Masons staged a rally, but it was too late. Thus ended one of the major upsets of state ------ 20-7. fThe Masons later beat the Sunset Bisons in the State Finalsj. Bonham---7 Sherman---'IQ Cl-lereb The Bearcats introduced a spectacular brand of football in the mesh- ing or man-in-motion system. O'Brien Robnett, hefty 190 lb. end got away two nice end runs in this way. After gaining a comfortable margin, the Cats settled back to the defensive and the game was only mediocrefor the rest of the time. Denison---6 Sherman---6 C-ihereb Playing before a capacity crowd, the Bearcats journeyed to Denison hoping to repeat last year's performance. The boys on the squad turned in probably the best game of the year. Captain Maurice Bryan undoubtedly played the best game of his career,f,.IQeon Pelly and Emil Hatfield were a constant threat to the Yellow Jacketslgoal posts, but pay dirt was not reach- ed until Hattield skirted wide around Denison'sleft end for the only Sherman touchdown. The Cat line playedpagaizre that would do credit to any team, The line dropped the Jacket inteiffeiaiiiififffie before it could get started and Lloyd Baxter, backing the line, would nail them with his vicious tackles. There was a few tense moments when the time came for the Denison conversion, but McKorkle's try failed, saving the Cats from a repetition on the Sherman-Denison game of '37. North Dallas---Q8 Sherman---7 C-ihereb - The Bearcats went to Dallas to have one of their off days, 190 yards lost in penalties. Earl Austin, triple-threat mln was spark for the North Dallas team who had a field day. The Bearcats set some kind of a record in fumbles-having 23 marked up against them during the four quarters. Paris---7 Sherman---Q7 Ci-hereb Hitting their stride again after their disappointing show against North Dallas, the Cats played heads up football the full 60 minutes of their Paris engagement. The line played a splendid game as did Leon Pelly, Maurice Bryan, and Emil Hatfield in the backfield. The Sherman boys were never called upon to show their full strength, and the Paris score was made on a Huke pass that was caught by Lowrey Inzer, hefty Paris tackle who lumbered 65 yards, protected by beautiful blocking on the part of his team-mates, during the third quarter. Captain Bryan pulled a ligament during the game which kept him out of the following game. Gainesville---Q7 Sherman--.7 Ci-iereD In this yearls Bearcat-Leopard clash, the conditions were the reverse of those of 1937, when the Cats needed only a tie to win the district title. Undefeated and untied, the Leopards appeared in new uniforms which they had bought to use in the state race. Their initial attack was based on power plays, but the Bearcat li11e held them so that they soon turned to a very successful aerial attack. The only Sherman marker was made by Leon Pelly following a Bearcats 40 yard passing and running attack. if Lgmufl BASKETBALL l07ffswD Letfefmen Robert Vick Ellison Breedlove Leon Pelly Lamurl Layland 0'Brien Robnett Harry King Bean James Green Richard Lackey, Mgr.
