VVe have taken the place of others. Still others will take our places. The Bearcat spirit on the football field, and in the school room, as Well as in life, means fight the game , but iight it cleanly, in memory of the past, to get the best out of the present, and to leave a worthy heritage for the future. Let the Bearcat spirit so direct that those who take our placesv will be inspired to carry on Worthily. ' L. T. Cook, Superintendent Fellow Students! No kind of education is Worth anything that does not have a vital effect on character, in which the eternal values are revealed and attestedf' livery act of our lives bespeaks the type of educational incomes. School life should reveal higher types of behavior. In all human relationships the school is being measured. S0 let your life be so ordered that others will see its good influences, and glorify the Bearcat Spirit , which symbolims the idealism of Sheaman High. L' H. L. B yron Davis Tllli IIISTORY Ol Tlllfl SENIOR CLASS We, the Senior Class of 1935, are very proud of the record we have made during the four years we have attended Sherman High School. We have achieved many things, some of which senior classes in the future may improve upon. However, we feel that We have done our best for our class and for our school. We hope that we have been a help and a guide for the Freshman, Sophomore, and Junior Classes. If we have set a good example for them, we shall feel that we have accomplished much. Throughout our high school career, we have been outstanding in many activities. In our Senior year especially have we been participants in practically all organizations of the school. Preference for Seniors as officers of the various clubs has prevailed this year. Members of the Senior Class have been prominent in all sports, basketball, football, track, and tennis, in both the Choral and Glee Clubs, in the Future Farm- ers of America, in Hi-Y, as well as the various other clubs of Sherman High School. The Seniors of 1935 feel as though they have performed well the tasks which have been set before them. If they have made mistakes, may the other classes profit by their errors, thus benefiting themselves. Pleasant have been the days we have spent at Sherman High School. There have been very pleasant relationships between students and teachers. We shall retain many of these happy memories and recall them in the years to come as We take our places in the world. We only hope that the long-coveted regime of the Senior Class of 1935 has been as happy for the other students and all the teachers of Sherman High School as it has been to us. It has been well represented in scholarship, athletics, and lnterscholastic League contests. The class has an unusually high percentage of its members on the Honor-Roll each month. This year the Juniors have seemed particularly Q5 interested in the various school clubs, having many members in Spanish, F ' I yllatin, Home Economics, Dramatics, Choral Club, Glee Club, and Future gl a G my allzlnmers Clubs. The girls' debate team is made up entirely of members of the Junior Class, as is the girls' doubles in tennis. The football and the basketball teams had as members and lettermen many Junior boys. We are proud of our class and the work that it has done and are looking forward to an excellent Senior year. -Martha Jane Williams, '36. Washam 'l'Ill'l HISTORY Ol THIS SOPIIOMORIC CLASS Last year the freshmen of Sherman High accomplished much work due to our capable sponsor, Mrs. Porter Travis. This year, under the sponsorship of Mrs. Washam, the class held enthusiastic meetings with interesting programs given by the separate Sophomore home rooms. We held our first meeting soon after school started and elected the following officers: John Ellis, presidentg Joe Scull, vice-presidentg Nor- ma Jean Edds, secretary-treasurer, and Bob Burns, class representative. The Sophomore Class was ably represented in the many activities of high school. We had a number of boys play on the Bearcat team. Two members of the class lettered this year. Also many boys played on the Bearkitten squad and are showing promising Work. We were also represented insthe numerous clubs. There are two girls of the Sopho- more Class on the tennis teams. As we pass on to our junior year, we hope to accomplish more than we have accomplished the past two years. -Lucille Altman, '37, Alexander, Claude Allen, Burl Allen, Theresa Altman, Lucille Anderson, Lowell Andrus, Mildred Atnip, Elizabeth Bale, Collis Ballard, Zac Barham, Mildred Barker, Alvin Barnes, Ruby Barnes, Mary Louise Batsell, Marvin Bell, Eugene Beckett, Lucille Bishop, Marie Blackburn, Janice Blackmon, Ralph Blankenship, Latrell Blankenship, Owen Blalack, Charles Blalack, James Allen Blue, Gaylord Bounds, J. Proving its strength and good judgment from the very first by selecting William Howard as president, Rayburn Nall as vice president, Frankie Madison as secretary, Betty Hall as treasurer, and Dorothy Brown as representative, the class started activities off with a boom. Under the guidance of our sponsor, Mrs. Travis, the class has held several interesting and instructive meetings and has proved to be strong competition in every contest with the other classes. - The September class meeting was an inspirational one in which We Freshman for the first time greeted each other as classmates. Just be- fore the Thanksgiving and the Christmas holidays we enjoyed excellent programsbconsisting entirely of Freshman talent. We presented a very successful play in chapel titled, Looking Out for Hezekiah. During the year we have been well represented in various clubs- the choral, glee, pep squad, and band. Several of our members went out for declamation, spelling, and baseball. The Junior Honor Society also was proud of its thirty members. Several Freshmen proved very val- uable as reporters on the Hi-Talk staff. The freshman home room sponsored by Mr. Griffin tied for one of the fourth holidays which the P. T. A. offered for the best representa- tion of mothers. In the annual popularity contest our favorites were Robbie Jo Cook, Dorothy Brown, Nancy Lee Love, Rayburn Nall, William Howard, and George Helton. As a whole it can hardly be said that this Freshman Class can be ex- celled. We are proud of our record, and hope to be even more success- ful in our next three years. Being' an inexperienced team against seasoned veterans, they lost 20 to 0. This was their first game in the 1934 season and-they showed them- selves to be great prospects. Dallas Tech, 75 Sherman, 2 The fighting Bearcats held the Tech Wolves 7 to 2. Fumbles the part of the Bearcats paved the way for the Tech marker. The Bear- cats were outplayed by a much more experienced team having the edge only in the punting. Sherman's points were made by stopping the Wolves behind their own goal line. Corsicana, 133 Sherman, 0 Corsicana collected yardage at crucial moments to hand a defeat to the battling Bearcats. The game was much closer than the score implies and the Cats showed a marked im- provement. The Corsicana markers came in the first and third quarters. Captain Vestal was knocked out in the second period and played until the half in a dazed condition which greatly handicapped the Bearcats. Woodrow Wilson, 265 Sherman, 12 David 0'Brien's brilliant 1'uns dur- ing the first half gave the Wildcats the edge over the Bearcats. O'Brien, making all of his team's scores was the outstanding player. At the be- ginning of the second half Sherman came back to score 12 points. The game was played on a muddy field which slowed down the Bearcats con- siderably. M5 ISD34 GRID GAMES Sherman, 127 McKinney, 6 After battling to a scoreless tie during the first three quarters, Sher- man opened up in the fourth quarter to chalk up two markers. McKinney also scored their only marker in the fourth quarter. McKinney had the ball on the one yard line as the game ended. Sherman's line held like a stone wall as their goal was threat- ened in the last minute of play. Gainesville, 195 Sherman, 6 Scoring a touchdown in every quar- ter except the third the Gainesville Leopards scored a victory over the Bearcats. The Bearcats seemed to get all the bad breaks. Gainesville's spin plays proved most efficient against the Bearcats and with the help of a white ball blending with the white fronts of their sweaters they made considerable gains through the Bearcat line. Denison, 75 Sherman, 2 After eleven long years Denison won a victory over Sherman High Bearcats. The fighting Bearcats out- played the Jackets at every point, pil- ing up 288 yards gained to Denison's 49 yards. Sherman kept the ball in Denison's territory most of the time. On five occasions the ball was within 3 yards of the goal line, but Sherman failed to carry it over. Sherman, 20, Bonham, 0 Sherman Bearcats, combining a passing and running attack pounded out a brilliant victory over the Purple Warriors of Bonham. After a score- lass half, Sherman scored 20 points in the second half. Playing on a muddy field the Bearcats showed Bonham to be truly a class B team. fr l' UU' I 'ISQOAL l.IU'l l'I'QK.Yll'QN VERNON CALDWELL Quarterback f f-rv f . .l,,.:-' M 'V A Ah , V' In .VH fe f V ,V fl Y-L, V, I N - I? m.a-5' . Co-Captain Sam Tate, although unable to play, gave the boys an inspiration to fight hard, and fight hard was what they did. They shat- tered the perfect conference record of the Scots. Recovering a fumble behind the goal line scored Sherman's only marker. Sherman, 135 Denton, 0 Sherman Bearcats nosed out the W Denton Broncs 13 to 0 in a field of mud. Two fumbles in the second quarter paved the way for both of Sherman's markers. It was a hard- FOO'l'BALL l.ETTERMl+IN driving Bearcat eleven that complete- ly dominated the Broncs throughout the game. WOODROW CARTER Center and Tackle . The high lights of this year's play were as follows: The double victory over Denison gave us the right to represent this county in the district meet. A very close game with Denton, although losing 14-23, was very impressive, as they later won the state championship and placed two men on the all state team. Victories over Highland Park and Greenville in mid- season and a victory over Ter- rell in the district meet were also well deserved. Captain Jack Vestal, Dod- son, and McCall played very consistent ball all year and they are given credit for what success the team enjoyed. With four letter men back next year, prospects are very bright. These boys are Captain-elect McCall, at center, Vestal and Williams at guards, and Shock at forward. In doubles, Charles Butler and Maurice Crowder won the championship of two dis- fricts without losing a set. In preliminary matches, they defeated Terrell, Greenville, Van Alstyne, Austin College, and McKinney. In the County Meet, they easily won from Denison, in straight sets. Bobby Jack- son lost in singles to Murray Marshall of Denison, but held the score to a 6-4, 6-4, 6-2 count. . In the Interscholastic League District Meet at Dallas, Butler and Crowder demon- strated that they were real district tennis champions by mowing down all opposition without the loss of a set. The results of the meet follow: Sherman defeated Garland. 6-0: 6-3, Highland Park, 6-0 :6-2, and North Dallas in the finals, 6-1: 6-4: 6-2. The doubles team won its semi-final match in the Regional Meet at Denton, but lost in the finals to the strong Central High team from Ft. Worth. Jack Fulkerson, Tom Moore, and Jerry Totten were also members of the team. They play a good brand of tennis, and, no doubt, will represent the school next year. The first six ranking players composed of Frances Davis, Ann Thompson, Martha Marie Stinson, Martha Eubank, Marion Wright and Betty Ellis were allowed to play during the regular tennis period while the remainder met twice a week after school. A number of practice matches were held with Kidd-Key College in which the High School girls were victorious in at least half of the games. McKinney High School players were the first to invade the locals' court and in this encounter Frances Davis won in singles, 6-3, 6-1, and the doubles team, Martha Marie Stinson and Ann Thompson, won 8-6, 6-3. In a tournament at McKinney, composed of Terrell, Denton, Sherman and Mc- Kinney, Frances Davis defeated the McKinney representative 6-0, 6-0 and captured the title with a 6-0, 6-2 victory over the Terrell High School entry. Ann Thompson and Martha Marie Stinson carried off the doubles crown by defeating McKinney doubles team 6-0, 6-2 in the first round, and in the final round defeated Denton 9-7, 5-7, 6-4. Van Alstyne girls were defeated in doubles 6-0, 6-1 and in singles 6-0,6-0. In the County Meet, Frances Davis had little trouble in defeating her Denison op- p'-nent 6-1.6-0 nor did Martha Marie Stinson and Ann Thompson their doubles op- ponents, 6-0, 6-0. At the District Meet held in Dallas, Ann Thompson and Martha Marie Stinson lost in the final round 6-0, 6-3 to the strong North Dallas High School team that won the State meet last year, after having won previous matches from Highland Park and Gar- land. Frances Davis won easily over the Irving representative, but lost in the semi- final round to the Woodrow Wilson High School representative. The High School representatives made a good showingin all 'contests this year, and since all will be back next year, a still better showing is anticipated. Letter winners in girls' tennis are: lVI'lI l12l Marie S1inson, Ann Thompson and Frances Davis. L YEAR VW Wfzifflgi N X 441410-L -JL , 5' If C V w 1 1 1 1 Plul' l,luADl'.RS C. S. Blasting the lid off the 1934 football sesaon, the powerful Greenville Lions, 1933 state champs, stopped the Bearcats by a 20 to 0 count on Phillips Field before approx- imately 4,000 fans on September 21. The Greenville team, featuring the famous Bert Marshall and Tarzan McElreath, were quite successful in passing. The Bear- cats' one scoring attempt failed after the pigskin crossed the Lions' ten-yard stripe. The Dallas Tech Wolves downed the Bearcats 7 to 2 in a hard fought battle at Fair Park Stadium on September 28. Dallas Tech had some rather large men and also some small ones, but as a whole they had a very strong and tough bunch of huskies. Before the game, the pupils showed their real school spirit by joining in a parade that was staged down town immediately after school. On October 5, school was dismissed at noon for the Fair. The Bearcats met the Corsicana Tigers at the Fair Park stadium at 7 130. The Bearcats journeyed to Dallas to face the Woodrow Wilson Wildcats at Fair Park Bowl Saturday night, October 13. Although it rained during the entire game, it did not seem to bother the boys and they succeeded in scoring two touchdowns. On October 26, a hysterical crowd saw the Bearcats make a gallant one-yard line stand in the closing moments of play to win their first conference victory in the Dis- t1'ict 6 race at Fair Park Stadium. The final score: Sherman 123 McKinney 6. Neal and Everheart scored the touchdowns for Sherman in the fourth period. In the first quarter Everheart suprised the Lions as well as everyone else by a 70 yard punt. The play of Captain Tate at guard and Barker at end was a feature of the Sherman line. After the game, a Snake Dance was held. On November 2, charging with a machine-like precision, Gainesville's fighting' Leopard eleven smashed out a decisive 19 to 6 conference victory over the Bearcats at the Fair Park Stadium before an estimated crowd of 4,000 persons. Vernon Cald- well, Bearcat quarterback, saved Sherman from a whitewashing when he snagged a flying fumble and dashed 64 yards for a touchdown. After eleven long years of waiting, Denison football fans launched a wild celebra- tion as the Yellow Jackets scored a 7 to 2 victory over their ancient rivals on the turf of the Forest Park Stadium on November 9. It was one of the hardest fought and prettiest high school gridiron contests ever staged in Denison on a perfect night be- fore crowded stands. The Bearcats so outplayed the Jackets it seemed quite impos- sible that they should have lost. Caldwell, Vestal, and Neal led the offense, but the cntire team played an outstanding game and never gave up hope nor lost heart, de- spite their heartbreaking attempts to uncork a scoring punch. 'J n I III-l.lGII'l'S OF THE YEAR Combining a timely aerial barrage with a slashing running attack, the Bearcat eleven clawed their way to a 20 to 0 victory over Bonham's Purple Warriors, November 16. The soggy turf, drenched by recent rains, failed to slow up Captain Jack Vestal, who ripped the Purple Warrior forward wall to shreds and slanted off tackles for con- stant advances. In the third quarter Vestal intercepted a Bonham aerial and sprinted 45 yards for a touchdown. Neal was also one of the main offensive threats ripping off nice gains through the center of the line. On November 23, playing an inspired brand of football, a valiant band of Sher- man High School Bearcats smashed the perfect conference record of the Highland Park Scots at Fair Park Stadium by holding the highly touted Dallas eleven to a 7 to 7 tie. Perfect football weather prevailed, as approximately 2,000 highly surprised fans saw a fast charging Bearcat eleven outplay the visitors through most of the contest and hold the Scotties scoreless until the middle of the final quarter. Captain Tate, who received a crushed cheek bone in a practice session, witnessed the game from an auto- l mobile on the sidelines. The game was dedicated to him. The members of the Bearcats had plenty to be thankful for on Thanksgiving Day. Even though the weather was cold and rainy they defeated the Denton Broncos 13 to 0 in the final game of their 1934 playing schedule. One of the main offensive stars for the Bearcats was Bobby Neal, who broke loose for many long gains. Bobby scored both the touchdowns for the 'Cats. Captain Vestal played a spectacular game, both on the offensive and the defensive. After several confusing days of nominations and voting, the classes elected their favorites for the annual popularity contest. As is the usual custom, the Senior favor- ites won-the following having been elected: Chic Moody, most beautiful girlg Mary Gail Wilbanks, most popular girlg Marguerite Ivy, most representative girly Logan Hall, most handsome boyg Sam Tate, most popular boyg and C. S. Edmiston, most rep- resentative boy. Another successful production by the Senior Class under the direction of Miss Wilda Henderson was witnessed by a large crowd in the school auditorium Tuesday, December 14. The cast for the play, Dollars to Doughnuts, was well chosen and they played their parts well, keeping the audience highly entertained all evening. December 21-Januany Si-Holidays HI-LIGHTS OF TIIE YEAR Twenty-three boys received sweaters in chapel on January 21, for their work dur- ing the football season. Two of the boys took fobs instead of sweaters because they had lettered previously. These boys were Captain Jack Vestal and Vernon Caldwell. Merit sweaters were awarded three boys for their work on the second team and their faithfulness in working out. These boys were: Woodrow Barnes, Wallace Gray and Walter Talley. Exams-January 23, 24, 25. Graduating exercises for the mid-term graduating class were held in the audito- rium Tuesday, January 29, at the assembly period. Twelve students received their diplomas. No first and second in scholastic standing was announced because the mid- term seniors now have to compete with the spring graduates for scholarships. Several activities were enjoyed by the class including a Horoscope Party given by Miss Hen- derson, a steak fry, a breakfast, and a matinee. Thursday, February 29, at the assembly period, the annual faculty basketball game was played. The greater percentage of the student body was present rooting for the boys. Coach Griffin was probably the faculty's outstanding playerg however, Mri Mitchell, Mr. Dickey and Mr. Blair did beautiful playing. The faculty won by a large margin. March 2, the F. F. A. of Sherman High were hosts to the eleven chapters of the Sherman district at an all day basketball tournament. Teams and teachers repre- sented were: Valley View, J. M. Cooper: Wliitesboro. M. S. Dean: Whitewright, S. W. Cunninghamg Denison, A. C. Caseyg Bonham, J. R. Spivey, McKinney, J. T. Rollins, Pilot Point, J. L. Owensg Honey Grove, W. E. Lasseterg Justin, J. L. Moses: Sanger, L. I. Samuels, and Sherman, Mr. Lloyd. E. H. Varnell of Arlington, district supervi- sor, was also present. On March 7, 8, 9, the girls' regional basketball meet, which included outstanding teams from Northern Texas and Southern Oklahoma, was held here. Invitations were sent to approximately 25 or 30 of the best teams in the region, although only the first 16 were allowed to enter the contest and play for regional honors. The winners of he first place in the tournament received a gold loving cup and gold basktballs. Our girls won second place and were presented with silver basketballs. Meeting at Loy Park on Friday evening, March 11, approximately one hundred members of the senior class had a hilarious time on the annual steak fry. Food was plentiful on this occasion and everyone seemed to be full up. Jumping over to Denison to participate in the first county track meet ever to be held on the new athletic field at Forest Park, the Sherman Bearcats, on March 29, scored a victory over the Jackets. The Junior division was also won by Sherman due to excellent performances of Billy Dodd and Phen Enochs. The Senior division was very close, with Allen of Denison pacing the group for honors with 15.66 points, close- ly followed by Kincaid of Sherman with 14 points. The boys representing' us were Red Vestal, Carter, Everheart, Edmiston, Tucker, Melton, McConnell, Kincaid, Duval, Chumbley, Tate, Kissinger ,Wall, Williams, Barrett, Riley, Champie, Dodd, Hendricks, Enoehs, Swafforcl, Claunch, Gritiitli and Mc-Guire. On April 1, Sherman High was turned into what appeared to be a kindergarteng at least, the seniors were in their second childhood once more. To an onlooker the styles for what the well-dressed child of 1935 will wear were presented. Small boys wearing sho1't pants and knickers, socks, small hats, and carrying pistols, toys and can- miy, ran through the halls. Tiny girls, dressed daintily in short, fluffy dresses and large colored hair-ribbons, skipped through the corridors. Blonde, brown and black curls bobbed up and down on the heads of the attractive modernly-dressed little girls. Kid Day was a big success, and the seniors thoroughly enjoyed this activity. On April 24, the Sherman High chapter of the National Honor Society was organ- ized. This group replaces the Senior Scholarship Club, membership of which was based entirely on scholarship. Membership in the National Honor Society is based on leadership, scholarship, service, and character, and the members are chosen from the highest ranking twenty percent of the senior and junior class. Since the require- ments for membership are so restrictive, it is a very great honor to be a member of this organization. Miss Retus Farlow is the sponsor of the local chapter. The officers are: Helen Orr, president, Leslie Bullock, vice-presidentg Martha Marie Stinson, secre- tary, Charles Calhoun, treasurer. The seniors enjoyed a full program of activities which included: April lil!-S9lll0l' Carnival April 26-Senior Day May 17-Senior Play, The Luck of the Irish May 20, 21, 22-Final Exams May 23-Swimming Party and Supper at Bush's May 25-Senior Banquet May 26-Baccalaureate Sermon at the First Baptist Church May 28-Commencement Exercises In the midst of the senior activities on May 15, to be exact. the Arhenians were distributed. i SHERMAN WINS ALI.-ROUND IIONORS IN COUNTY INTERSCIIOLASTIC MEET For all-round honors in the county interscholastic meet held March 29 and 30, Sherman amassed a total of 239W points to 188k for Denison.
