We, the Juniors, Q of this year, had our turn two years ago. Q Q We proved to bea very active class of freshmen. At the first of the Q Q school year, we organized and chose Miss Dorothy Speer as our sponsor, Q Q Ed Streun, president, Marshall Elmore, vice-president, and Charles Burns, Q Q secretary-treasurer. We soon found out we had to go through what all the i Q other freshmen had to put up with. It was getting accustomed to the Q ! . ' 1 . . . . ' -4 ' U W ' .77 5 Q slams gixen us by the upperclassmen. Anothei thing being told slimes Q Q belonged in the balcony during chapel. Such remarks made us feel rather Q small. Q It was not long, however, until we lost our inferiority complex and be- Q ! gan trying to act like the Sophs, Juniors, and possibly the Seniors. Since I Q all the classes were planning entertainments, we gave a weiner roast. It Q E was a huge success and everyone had a grand time. Q Q During the football season, we issued stickers to show our loyalty to Q Q our Bearcats. Q Q Miss Grace McKown was our sponsor the second year. As all soph- Q Q omores are known to act important, we began to feel our importance in Q Q Sherman Hign, but, why shouldn't we? In the contest for the election of a Q Q queen of the school, the sophomore candidate ran a very close race with the Q Q Senior candidate. In fact, it was so close the Seniors became very worried. Q 3 I sincerely believe had the sophmores had a little more time, our candidate Q Q would have been crowned queen. Q ! Q Q Outside of the Senior class, the sophomores were the first to order i Q class pins. Many of the students bought them. The same year our class Q Q issued two sets of stickers. Q i ! Q We had representatives in. all the outside activities, such as football, Q basketball, track, debate, spelling, and essay contests. Q This year, as Juniors, we hope to really make Sherman High School Q proud of its junior class. Miss Clara .Io Brown is our sponsor, Howell E Hight, president: Lora Evelyn Crutchfield, vice-president, Raymond Travis, Q Q secretary, and Margaret Thomas, treasurer. Many of our class belong to Q Q the Honor Society. One of the members of the junior class has the high- Q ! est scholastic standing in the high school. l Q We are represented on both the football and basketball teams. Pract- Q Q ically half of each team is composed of juniors. Like the year before, we Q Q are again represented in debate, tennis, track, spelling, and essay contests Q Q Two of our candidates made a good showing in the beauty popularity Q Q contest, although they were defeated. YVe have our turn next year, how- Q Q ever, and right here we wish to warn the coming freshmen, sophomores, Q and juniors of the class of '32 and what they will do. i l , Q MARGAR151' BINKLICY '32 Q Q Q QllllllllllilllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllIllllllIIllllllllllllllllllllllllllIIiIIIlIlHllllllllllllllllllllllllllIlllllllllllllllllllillllllHllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllillllQ Sophomores !IlllllIlllllllllllllllllllIlllllllllllllllIllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll THE ATHENIAN 1931 llIIIlllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllIlllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll! Of course, our E every movement was boosted by out efticientand enthusiastic sponsor, Mrs. 5 5 Travis. The president, Franklin Morrisg the vice-president, Fay Delle Q Q Slaughterg and the secretary, Mike Key, were chosen by the class, in the E i first part of the year, and proved most capable. The class president was i E the youngest member of the debating team, and Jack Sandall was a spec- E 2 tacular letterman for the Bearcats. The High School Band chose as its E E leader George Smith, also a Freshman. At the last class meeting Robert E E Smith, presidentg Levis Hall, vice-presidentg Knoxford Ballou, secretary, i E and Frances Smith, treasurer, were the chosen officers. The class was the first one to enter the high school Without prev- E E iously having attendee the Junior High. It started its career as the largest 5 2 class in history of the School, with aproximately three hundred registering Q i during the first semester. i .E 6 ... E At our first meeting. held near the close of the first six Weeks of school, ! ! we effected an organization and showed excellent foresight in selecting i i Rebecca Stearling as president, and Doyle Houser as secretary. We have ? i benefited by their leadership and by the guidance of Mrs. Travis, our E i sponsor. 5 Throughout the year we have supported the extra-curricular activities 2 of the school. Mary Ella Campbell made a dandy freshman subscription Q solicitor for the Athenian. Billy Blunlt zvas a member of the business staff i E ofthe Hi-talk, and individual members of the class contributed to the E i paper. We feel honored that Tory Thompson and Linda Wharton succeed- E 2 ed in becoming members of the girls' second string debate team. The sec- E E retary of the Representative Council, one of the most important bodies in Q 2 the high school, is Rebecca Sterlirg, our president. We are also represent- Q Q ed in the school band and in the choral club. The class is proud of the i Q freshmen Who have Worked so diligently in tennis, declamation, and spelling. E 3 We feel that some of these will be participants in the Interscholastic E E League, and as result, the possessors of an HS . 2 i Despite the fact that We have supported, backed, and participated in i E many activities, We have not neglected or lagged behind in our studies. We 2 have been Well represented in the Scholarship Society. In the number of 5 ge students on the term honor roll, the freshmen, with twenty-two represent- 5 atives, were second only to the sorhomores, who were represented by g Q twenty-three. Q i Just before the Christmas holidays we held another class meeting. ! E This was enjoyed to the nth degree by all, for the program was both inter- i E esting and amusing. At that time We discovered quite a variety of talent i 5 in our class, of which we shall make use of in the future. i ! 5 The January meeting of the P. T. A. was in charge of our sponsor, Q H Mrs. Travis, and several members of the freshman class appeared on the i 2 program. It was also the initial appearance of our violin quartette. 5 5 The freshman class has not really had time to prove its mettleg how- ? ever, give us the time and opportunity to do so. We predict great things i 5 of this class. Watch it in the future! A group of veterans composed the roster of the 1931 Sherman High S debate teams-Warner Evans and Dick Sanders, both seniors, made up the first boys' team, representing the school for their fourth year as first string debaters, Mary Joe Durning and Roberta Hollingsworth, also seniors and experienced debaters, made up the first team for girls. E Hayden Head, a senior, and Franklin Morris, sophomore, each also Q i members of the team last year, were back as the second boys' team. The i 2 second girls' team, Linda Wharton and Tory Thompson, freshmen, have 2 5 had five debates, losing only one decision. 5 E Including the county meet, which was won by Sherman from Deni- E 3 son, the boys' teams have engaged in a total of twenty debates, winning E E every contest in which a decision was rendered. Our coaches have been working with the Bearcats, both in football, basketball, and track for the past two years and have produced powerful clubs both years. Not only have these men taught these sports, but havc also taught good habits, and clean sports- manship to all their players. This is Coach Dickey's second year as mentor of the Bearcats. He was faced with building a team this year with only five lettermen as a nucleus but produced a fight- ing team. Coacher has instilled a fighting spirit in all his players and taught them to play in a clean sportsmanship way. Coach Dickey has promising material for next year and we sincerely wish him the greatest of all his seasons. Coach Blair, like Coach Dickey, played football for Sherman High and Austin College. In his two years as assistant coach of the Bearcats, he has turned out strong lines and produced many stars. Many of his former linesmen have already made good in college football. He is respected by all his associates, and is a friend of every boy in Sherman High. Under the leadership of these fine coaches, the Bearcats should go far in the state race in '31, Coach Fowler's ability as a coach may be judged by his success with the Bearkit- tens. He took this team of youngsters through the best season that the Bearkittens have ever known. Coach Fowler is well known and respected by the Whole student body. We sincerely hope that Coach Fowler and his Bearkittens of '31 have a winning team, and also that his good work with the track team is kept up. This was Mr. Walker's first year as Business Manager of athletics at Sherman High. It is a much harder job than it seems and Mr. Walker deserves much credit for what he has done. He completed a successful campaign of season tickets for football games and under his guidance, basketball paid for itself for the first time in the history of the school. We do not believe there is a better business manager in the state! lllllllllllllllilllllllliHllllllilllllllllllllllllllHlllllWilllllllllllllHllIlilllllillillliillltlllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllIIIIIillllIIIIIIIIiIIIIllIllIIIIlIlllIIIIHlIIllllllllillllilllllllilllllllllHill' !llllIlll'TlllllllllllllllllIiillllllllllli'll'lllIlll'Ell'llllllllllllllllllllll 'l'lH'3 ATHICNIAN 1931 lllllllillllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllIlllllllllllllllllllllilg i ! Q 5 PEP LEADERS 3 Q ,, , . , Q E Harry Skeeter Emmerton, though miniature in size, can really lead yells. This i is his first year as leader, and he has certainly filled the position well. There is no Q doubt but that some college will gain a good leader, and Sherman High's only regret is Q E that Harry did not show his ability several years ago. i Earleen McMullen served her second year as yell leader. Her past experience made ei her very outstanding. It is regrettable that she will not be back with us next yearg but 2 she will make a most capable leader in college. 5 L . , i Mary Fay Turley was elected only this year, and she stepped in and led the yells E ! like a veteran. She is the peppiest leader we have known in a long while. Mary Fay 2 i has pep and spirit not only at a football game, but she is always lively and vivacious. i 54 Since Mary Fay graduates this year, we hope for her the best of luck for her future. l i Martha Lou Vaughn was chosen yell leader this year. With this ye-ar's experience, she is due to make a very outstanding leader next season. She has the pep and enthusi- ! asm herself, and it is no hard job for her to instill pep into others. Pauline Freeman has two more years yet in Sherman High, and with her past ex- j perience is expected to do her part in sending encouragement on the field to the 2 or B m W hpf hid bt mckmei ! E earca. eoe or e' le eso u. . E ! ! i Mike Key is also a Sophomore, and we believe that he will be able to assume much E of the responsibility in directing the Pep Squad next year. With this past year's ex- 3 ! perience he will be able to do a big part in keeping the spirit for the Bearcats. Much Q will depend on him since he is the only man leader left. i i 3 3 PEPSQUAD 5 3 The Pep Squad, directed by Mrs. Brown and Mrs. Hayes, was never lacking in pep ! ! and enthusiasm for the Bearcats. 'When things began to look bad for the Bearcats and i fs most of the fans gave up in despair, the members of the Pep Squad could be heard on E 2 the sideline yelling 'tHold 'em, Bearcats! Hold 'em! E FOOTBALL LETTER MEN-1930 Q ii' i i CAPTAIN GEORGE MITCHELL-END j i George proved to us this year that he was all a first class captain should be, in 3 a every sense of the word. He was an example for his team to follow. We are sorry that i - George can not be with us next season, and we all wish him a very successful college E 3 record which we know is bound to be a vital part of his college career. E Q CAPTAIN J. c. COKER-HALFBACK 2 5 Jay ended a wonderful high school football career this year. He was the best E ! defensive halfback in the district and could also carry the ball because he ran hard ! 5 and was shifty. He is popular with the players and student body and his place will be 5 I I 5 hard to fill. We hope he continues the good work and makes good in college football. 5 I g ELMER FORTNER-CENTER 2 i Elmer Lee played a hard position and played it well. He was a tower of strength i E in the center of the Bearcat line. His passes were sure and accurate on offense and E E his defensive play was outstanding. He backed up the line on defense and very few E i gains were made over him. He was a hard trainer and had a good spirit. Because of i 2 these good traits, he was voted the best all-round player on the squad. We hope he E Q keeps his good work up in college. Q E MARGENE DAVIS-FULLBACK Q :' 2 g This is Sleepy's first year to play and he made a valuable man both on offense E Q and defense. He was a good lmeiplunger and an excellent blocker. His ability of Q i diagnosing opponents' plays and his sure and deadly tackling made him a good defen- i E sive fullback. He will be greatly missed when the team lines up next fall. 5 E LLOYD COLLINS-TACKLE E E Lonnie played a tackle position and played it. well. He is a fighter from head to E 5 foot and likes to rock 'em and sock 'emi' He trained hard and was always raring to E gg go. He was hardly ever taken out of a play and dealt much misery to opposing ball Q i carriers. Lon will not be back next year but wherever he goes to college, we know i E he will make a success. 5 ! E E ANDY OLSEN-END E 2 Swede earned his second letter this year. He played an end position and proved E g to be very dependable. He was fast at going down on punts and often stopped the i ! safety man in his tracks. His blocking was sure and hard which made him a valuable E E man. His kick-offs were of college calibre, very few of which failed to go over the Q E goal line. He is one of the veterans that will be sorely missed next year. E I - E LELMER REYNOLDS-END i 5 In his first year of football, Big Boy accomplished a feat that is very unusual. Z 5 He made the Bearcat team and also the all-district district team. His speed and ability E Q of catching passes stampednhim 'as a threat to all opposing teams. Because of his quiet 5 i natured friendliness ahndhhis abilityq on the grgdifon, he was elected Co-captain of the ! E 1931 Bearcats. May e ave anot er success u season next year as he has had this E I : E year. E 2 l 5 RAYMOND SMITH-GUARD 5 xg Smitty made the all-district team this year and he certainly deserved it. His Q weight made him a powerful man on defense and he was continually breaking through E i to smash opponents' plays before they got started. He was also good on offense. He Q : liked to run interference and open up the large holes for the backs to run through. He I Q will not be back next year but we are sure that he will make good in college. 'ai 5 ERNEST MILLER-HALFBACK 5 5 P had a wonderful season this year. It was the first year as well as his last. He E 2 was always a threat to opposing teams because of his shiftiness and speed. His slash- E ing off-tackle runs were always good for gains. He is a deadly tackler and played - E good defensive, too. He should make some college a valuable man. His speed and shiftiness also i E marked him as a good safety man. He is popular with his teammates and should have 5 E another big year next season. Q 2 CHARLES DUVAL-QUARTER AND HALFBACK g 2 Duke played his first season for the Bearcats this year and was a sensation at 5 ! both quarter and half. His blocking was excellent and there was no better punter in ! E the district. He gained many yards for the Bearcats because of his well placed punts. i g He is a hard trainer and thinks football all the time. Because of his ability and friend- 3 Q liness he was elected Co-Captain of the 1931 team and we hope he leads them to a ! 5 State Championship. E ! ! i JACK SANDELL-QUARTER i i Although he is only a sophomore, Cowboy made his second letter this year. He E i is a heady field general and an excellent passer and punter. He did nearly all the i 2 passing and was very accurate. He didn't run with the ball very much but was a pow- 5 Q erful blocker. He has two more years to play with the Bearcats and we hope he makes Q E all-state. E i JACK SILMAN-TACKLE i E Salmon was shifted from fullback to- tackle early in the season. He played a Q i spectacular game all season and was a fighting demon. He was good at going down on i E punts and stopped many safety men in their tracks. He is back next year, and with E 2 the experience he gained this season, should rate on the all-district team. g E EDWIN BELDEN-TACKLE Q : Brer was he hard luck boy of the club. He was -out of several games because of E ! the ten semester rule and a broken arm. Very few gains were made over him all year. Q i He was especially good on defense. He played a slashing tackle and dealt many op- i E posing ball carriers misery because of his hard tackling. He will be back next year and 5 Q we hope he shines as he did this year. 5 E CLIFFORD DANIEL-GUARD 5 - , l 5 Tip showed everyone that a little. man as well 'as a large one can play in the line. 2 E His fight and blocking made up. for his lack of welgnt and he made a valuable man. g ! His specialty on defense was slicing through the opposing llnemen. The Bearcats made i E many yards on Tip's guarding because of his thoroughness at the job. He will be 3 E back next year and will be an important cog in the Bearcat machine. g - - 5 oRv1A CHASTAIN-CENTER 5 E Chas came toius from Fort Worth and made a valuable man. Sherman boasted E E two fine centers this year that were excellent on both offense and defense. Chas was E Q a fighter and a hustler. He was a good blocker and an excellent pass intercepter. We ! E hope he continues his wonderful work next year and if he does, he will make a bid for i E all-state honors. 2 g RALPH HUGHES-GUARD 2 l i :. .. Ralph was the big boy that could play both guard and tackle. He played guard most i E of the time and performed like a veteran although it was his first year. His blocking -E Q was good on offense and his weight enabled him to break up many plays while on the E i defense. He will be one of the finest guards in the state in 1931. E S - : 2 - DEL MCMILLAN-FOOTBALL MANAGER i 2... E Q Although Del was ineligible for the football club this year, he rendered a great Q i service as manager. Although he played a nice offensive game, E 2 his defensive work was a shining light in every game. We are sorry to say, however, 2 E that Glynn will not be back next year and we know his services will be greatly missed. i 5 ORVIA CHASTAIN-GUARD AND FORWARD 5 2 Chas was the boy that played both guard and forward. His one-handed shots E E were a feature of every game. He is a good floor-walker and always hustled for the 5 E hall. He played at guard most of the time this year because of his good defensive work. ! i Because of his excellent playing qualities and his popularity, he has been elected cap- i 51: tain of the '32 team. Q The climax to their season was the A. A. U. Tournament held at B 2 Plainview. The girls went to semi-finals in Consolation and then lost to 5 j their old rivals, Celeste, in one of the best games played in the entire 3 tournament. They showed their good.sportsmanship in the way they i i took their loss.
