HARKNESS AIMS AND PURPOSES OF SPECIAL CLASS The special education of the mentally handi- capped child is concerned primarily with preparing the child for his future life and enabling him to get along in our modern American society. In Special Class the child is taught to perform tasks which will later help him in some kind of work, to behave properly while in company with others and to general- ly practice habits that are acceptable in order to hold his job.
