Road to State Girls' basketball began August 17, 1987, with great ex- pectations. Sixteen girls par- ticipated in this sport: three seniors, four juniors, four sophomores, and five freshmen. Their season began with eight non-conference games. They won four and lost four. Next were the conference games. The record was a little better: 8 and 2. The girls advanced to the district tournament held in Dillon ranked first and ended up winning the tournament for the third consecutive year. Two weeks later they were off to divisionals in Missoula. They received the second place trophy and advanced to the state tournament held in Lewistown. The Sheridan girls' basket- ball team of 1987 placed fourth in the state with a final record of 18 and 9. This was the first team to go to the state com- petition from Sheridan. 20

Panther Country The 1987-88 Panthers had a conference record of 4-6. This may not seem too im- pressive, but whatever the Panthers lacked in size and skill was overshadowed by thei desire to play basketball. The turnout of boys interested in basketball for the 1987-88 season was so good the for the first time in several years there were three teams of Panthers. Coaches Lott an Lane were assisted by Chris Mehring, a student from Western Montana College. The Panthers graduated five seniors this year but look forward to a great rebuilding year in 1988-89. 1.
