But regardless of the weather, the track team performed super! At the district meet in Bozeman, the Sheridan girls came out tieing for first place with Twin Bridges. The boys also came home with a first place trophy. When it was time for divisionals, it was the same old story for the boys. They again came home with the first place trophy. The girls came home placing fourth. It was another week of practice for those going to state. At the meet everything went well and the girls ended up placing fifth out of 96 schools and the boys brought home the first place trophy! They were met by the fire engines in Sheridan and parad- ed around town. Thanks to all their hard work, we have become The City of Champions. 14 1. Mark Kieckbusch throws us a winning high five. 2. (loan Bieler) U-l J g Next Vear! The frustration on Joan Bieler's face masks the feel- ings of all the Purplecats when they lost to the Ennis Mustangs at the District Tournament. It seemed that no matter how hard they fought the Mustangs still managed to stay ahead. That night they came back to defeat Lima and finish the season as winners. The girls under new coach Kerry Koenig, had a fan- tastic season. They were 11-5 for their entire season and 8-2 during conference play to place them second in the all-conference standings. To celebrate their winning record, the Purplecats went to dinner at the Black Angus in Butte on December 12. The girls enjoyed steak and various seafoods, along with several different drinks. They topped off the evening with Mudpie. 20 1. Now what do you want ? (Coach Koenig) 2. Andrew Swager (25) breaks a tackle while managing to stay in bounds. The Sheridan football team of 1983-84 consisted of six- teen boys who endured the long practices and the rough games. They were a very talented team with an overall record of 5-2. There were many outstanding players on the team this year. Senior Tony Tezak ended with an exceptional year with numerous touchdowns to his credit, jared Wright, Andrew Swager, Clint Mortenson, and Scott Wessel all contributed to the teams 33 touchdowns for a total of 255 points for the season. This season was full of unusual surprises for the team. During our game against Twin Bridges, quarterback lared Wright was hit hard early in the game and ended his season with a cast on his leg. The pressure was now on Andrew Swager, our back-up quarterback Some of the highlights for the season were the victory over our rival Twin Bridges, the victory over West Yellowstone, ending the season with a winning record, the end of the season prime rib dinner at The Hub, scar- ing the assistant coach after practices, and watching A Swager get killed. Freshman Fritz Bieler remembers the Clyde Park game the best because this happened to be the only game he played in! 23 HamEcnming Highlights S.H.S.'s homecoming festivities started on September 16 with the traditional parade through downtown Sheridan. The American Legion led the parade and was followed by the football and basketball players riding on the fire trucks with the floats close behind. The sophomores won first prize money of $25 with the slogan Burn those Bears! The seniors received second, freshmen third, and the juniors pulled an honorable mention for their efforts. After the morning events, the Panthers met the Lima Bears on the battlefield with the Pan- thers taking an easy victory. The final score was the Panthers 28, the Bears 18. Andrew Swager led the Panthers offensively with 116 yards on 21 carries, and scoring two touchdowns. Jared Wright and Tony Tezak each scored a touchdown. Way to go Panthers!! The Seniors, Wade Wright and Korinne Lueck, were crowned King and Queen. Other homecoming royalty were Juniors: Justin Rule and Nancy Jo Edmisten; Sophomores: Shane Escott and Audra Shaw; Freshmen: Bill Kemph and Janet Ostler. The S.H.S. Pep Club had Mr. Big perform for the Homcoming dance. Although the music was great, the attendance was ex- tremely low, and the Pep Club lost money! 1. This was the first year at S.H.S. that we have chosen varsi- ty cheerleaders twice: once for football and then again for basketball. There were only two football cheerleaders this year, but that didn't mean there was any less cheering. Sue and Nancy helped cheer the boys into a winning season All eight basketball cheerleaders made up routines to songs. One of their dances was to Rock and Roll Party in the Street by Styx. It was always exciting to see which pyramid the girls would do after the school song, and once in a while the crowd even got a little tumbling demonstra- tion. It was fun for the crowd, but not too exciting for the cheerleaders who ended up on the bottom of the pile!!! 1. FOOTBALL CHEERLEADERS: Sue Babcock and Nancy Jo Edmisten. 2. They are full of neat surprises and hopefully only a few bad experiences. The 1983 cross-country season was very successful, but also fun filled. One day the coaches were going to give the runners their times after each mile, but un- fortunately they had a flat tire; by the time they caught up to the boys they had already run three miles. The runners thought they were running the marathon mile! Roger Shaffer had knee surgery during the season, so at times he was seen traveling with the runners on a bike. Thanks to lemon juice, gum, oranges, and Gatoraid, the run- ners were always ready to win. Most of the runners ran junior varsity, except Mark who ran on varsity occasionally. The cross-country team had an awesome season! 1. CROSS-COUNTRY, FRONT ROW, L to R: Gus Wuelfing, Chris Franklin, Robert Simonsen. Volleyball as a variety sport finally arrived at Sheridan High School. Season play began at the Whitehall Invitational where SHS took third place. A season record was compiled of 3 wins and 14 losses. The Panthers were coached by Kitty Logan and Lori Waldemar. Tourney members included Joan Bieler, Lynn Elser, Lori Mantz, Nancy |o Edmisten, Connie Pearson, Sue Babcock, Tonia Sneddon, Nancy Ostler, Audra Shaw, Kim Guinnane, Rhonda Edmisten, and )anet Ostler. Highlights of the season were attending a clinic presented by the U S. Olympic Volleyball team and then watching them in action against Cuba, pizza, and staying overnight at Divisional Tournament in Bozeman, March 23 and 24. Everyone is excited and ready for next year's play. 37 The 1983-84 basketball season started with thirty boys trying out for the team. Ten of them made the A- squad. The remaining were divided in the B and C-squads. Throughout the season the numbers dwindled for various reasons, causing the C-squad to be eliminated and some of the B-squad to move up to the A-squad. The season was a thriller for the au- diences that watched the team hurdle their way into first place in the Con- ference. The District Tournament was held in Butte on February 23-25. The first game played against Ennis was a disappointment to the fans as well as to the team. We lost with a score of 74-64. We then played Twin Bridges the next morning and came out on top. We came home with third place in the district. After their practice in the Butte Civic Center in Butte, the team enjoyed steaks at Terri's. This was their end-of- the-season dinner. The highlights, as given by various team members, included the win over Harrison and also beating West Yellowstone. The team did a fine job this year even though they had some problems. The A-squad's final record was 14-4 and the B- and C-squad ended with an 11-11 record. 38 1. (Jodi Bennett) 78 Future Homemakers of America, better known as FHA, is a program designed for the Home Economics students at S.H.S. They hold a variety of dinners to acquaint new members into the organization and also to introduce the parents. The activity that is carried on year after year is held during the Christmas holidays. The FHA sponsors a dinner for the members, then they prepare for the caroling. This is designed to enlighten the holidays for the older residents as well as the younger generation. If it is impossible to go caroling, or just as another activity, they plan a hayride for enjoyment. Many of the members this year attended the district convention held in Butte. Any of the members interested may at- tend. The state convention, which was held in Missoula, has to be earned by the members. This is done by accumulating points throughout the year. The members sell concessions at basketball and volleyball games and attend the various ac- tivities to earn these points. As with any other organization, the FHA needs a source of income. This is managed by selling concessions at the various games and also by selling Sweetheart cookies and suckers for Valentine's Day. The FHA is a good organization for the individual who likes to be active in the Home Economics field. 1. HIGH SCHOOL BAND, FRONT ROW, L to R: James Ball, Nan- cy Wilson, Bronwen Stine, Lynn Elser.
