On November 24, 17 girls showed up for the first girls' basketball practice. It was a new type of work for Mrs. Burke to become the head coach. This season was going to be a real experience with a new coach, young team, and only three returning seniors to help out. The team experienced a very long night after their first game in Ennis when the bus broke down in Virginia City. The girls didn't worry, however, because Ella Edwards had her Girl Scout Manual. Although the PurpleCats worked hard for an 11-7 season, they also had good times. Such as the time the team gave the coach a shower after winning second place at the District Tournament. Mrs. Burke was really initiated when someone short-sheeted and soaked her bed in water at Big Fork. Divisional Tournament was an experience in itself as there was lots of snow and the team had to drive almost 35 miles to the games in Poison. The season's grand finale was a banquet held for the team, parents, and coach at the Vigilante Steak House in Laurin. 64 1. Purplecats begin the game with a huddle: symbolizing a victory. 2. Cross-Country Now A Varsity Sport BACK ROW, L TO R: Todd White, Tim Swager, Rudy Noorlander, Neal Elser, Steve Nunley, Ben Swager, Skip Steed, David Chrest, Alan Craver. FRONT ROW: Coach Flynn, Gayl Russell, Manager Steve Stender, Sharon Gilman, Assistant Coach Evnas. This year cross-country opened its doors to girls, but only Gayl Russell and Sharon Gilman were brave enough to try it. Each week, nine boys and two girls journeyed to a cross-country meet hoping to bring home a first place trophy. Some came home disappointed but others were overjoyed with their efforts. Each day offered new experiences for the young team, and despite the hard work and the worn out shoes, it was a worthwhile year for all. Sharon Gilman and Gayl Russell nervously watch other runners, while awaiting their turn. Football Roundup The 1977 football season may not have been as productive as other years when looking at the Panther's 2 win and 5 loss record but it proved rewarding mi many other ways. During cold morning and hot afternoon practices, this young foot- ball team enjoyed itself. Although ice breaks were not so common this year, Scott Allen frequently had to stop the action because he was right in the middle of a Rothchilds. Mr. Leary's assistant coach, Mr. Marsh, turned out to be a great asset to the team. Not only did he manufacture hard-hitting linemen but was called upon to make a critical speech at the homecoming pep rally. BACK ROW, LEFT TO RIGHT: Coach Leary, Mark McLaughlin, Kevin Cathey, Craig Noorlander, Cliff King, Scott Alien, Roscoe Lagge, Jim Hartford, Mark Nunley, Jeff McLaughlin, Caoch Marsh. The homecoming festivities actually began about a week before the game with each high school class collecting boxes and planning their floats. On the evening of Thursday, October 13, a large portion of the student body met in the gym for a brief pep rally followed by a snake dance through town and a huge bonfire of boxes collected just for the occasion, with the juniors earning $5 for bringing in the most cardboard. Early Friday afternoon, a parade consisting of each class’s float, the queen candidates and their escorts, and the football players and coaches riding on fire engines, wound its way through town and onto the football field. Townspeople and faculty members named the freshmen ’’Stomping Boot float the best of the bunch and awarded runner-up honors to the junior's Panther Victory Train. The game was a rough one for the Sheridan football players and fans alike. As halftime, and the crowning of the queen rolled around, the Panthers were losing 32-0. The queen candidates were driven onto the sunny field, and escorted to their places with senior candidate Holli Maddison being crowned queen. The game wound down to the final gun and a score of 40-0 in favor of Ennis. Later that evening the Pep Club sponsored a very well-attended dance with Sky providing the music. 1. Under the direction of second-year coach, Kevin Flynn, the Panthers garnered a conference co- champion position with Ennis. District Tournament resulted in our boys advancing to Divisional at Anaconda. Divisional proved to be ex- tremely challenging. The Flynn Panthers narrowly missed a trip to State by loosing a challenge game to Charlo. Congratulations on a job well done boys and especially Coach Flynn and Assistant Coach Leary.
