He lives with Mr. and Mrs. Sofus Christensen. Mrs. Christensen is from Tokyo, Japan. Ken was born on Shoudo Island which is located in the Inland Sea of Japan. His home is now in the city of Yokohama where he attended grade and high school. His mother is a home economics teacher, and his father is a junior high principal and ski instructor. Ken has a younger sister. Ken likes music and plays the guitar. He also likes sports especially swimming, skiing and sailboating. Some things he likes about Amer- ican schools are study halls and the fact that students have a choice of subjects. In Japan the schedule is planned for the student and there are no study halls. On June 10, 1977, Ken will be back home in Japan. He hopes to attend the university there. Charles B. Murray Who's to say whether he's happier now than then: whether he liked reprimanding students better than the great outdoors. We miss seeing the pride that would show in his eyes as he directed the Science Fair and the P. E. Show, and the knowing grin that would slowly build on his face as he would escort a student down to the office— but we can also see more than a hint of happiness in his smile as he heads out of town with his fishing pole. It's nice to know that now his time is at last his own, but we'll always remember with pleasure the days when it was ours. Sarah Swager With appreciation the Trailblazer Staff would like to dedicate the 1977 issue of our annual to Charles B. Murray. We are greatly honored to have him as a friend and associate. 4 New Faces: Freshmen Class officers: L-R Mike Maloney, President; Cliff King, Vice-president; Mark McLaughlin, Student Council Representative; and Kerri Cathey, Secretary treasurer. The sophomores managed to collect the largest pile of boxes for the fire and were awarded a $5 check by the Pep Club for their efforts. School spirit was high as the entire school helped the Panth- ers prepare for their homecoming victory over the Ennis Mustangs on October 8. Sheridan was behind at a deficit of 30-8 late in the third quarter and rallied for a 36-30 victory over the Mustangs. Our 1976 Homecoming festivities proved to be spirited and exciting. 1. Mrs. Kieckbusch looks on as eager sophomores stack the winning pile of boxes for the bon-fire. 2. The fire of school spirit burns bright for the Panthers. 3. Homecoming Royalty. L-R: John Reinmuth, Kensuke Ishibashi, Rusan Schulz, Queen Sandy Tezak, Steve Nunley, Rhonda Grotzke, Kerri Cathey, and Todd White. Gridiron Action The 1976 football season could be called nothing but successful. The season began with two new coaches and a revised program that led the Panthers to a 5 win, 2 loss record. Head Coach Dean Leary, formerly of Bozeman Rosary, and Assistant Coach Kevin Flynn of W. M. C. were instrumental in forming a winning ball club. The team started a little slow but greatly improved with every game. They managed 3 victories before falling to the Twin Bridges Falcons for their first of 2 losses. Many of the players felt that their success was due partially to double sessions for the first 2 weeks of practice. School support and the community's enthusiasm were also team assets. 1. The girls had an 11-3 season losing to Whitehall twice and Lima once. They traveled to district tournament at Western Montana College in Dillon November 18, 19, and 20. As second place winners, with Whitehall first, they once again journeyed to divisional tournament which was also held at WMC. At divisional tourney, the Purple Cats lost the first two games they played. These two losses put them out of the tournament. The season consisted of hard practices and some occasional water bottle fights but it was a fun season for the girls involved. 1. Dee Dee Graham puts one through the hoop show- ing good form. 2. Both clubs were also involved in a hay- ride and Christmas caroling, FFA activities for the year included district and state competition in mechanics, agronomy, and live- stock-judging, along with inter- mixed social and educational movements. The Father-Daughter Banquet, District and State Con- ventions, Chili Supper, and Secret Grandparents were all highlights of the FHA year. Members and officers alike shared in the responsibility and fun of the activities. 19 Cross Country This school year, Sheridan High School organized its first cross country team since 1970. This was the first year of cross country running for these seven runners, and Coach Flynn's first year of coaching. The team at- tended two meets: one at Harrison, and then the State Cross Country Meet at Helena. These spirited young men may not have come home victorious, but all of them except one are expected to be with the team next year. The boys have high hopes for a much improved second season. During the season, the team took time out from their rigorous training sessions to enjoy a hot dog fry at the Ruby Reservoir. There were many new experiences and festivities such as refreshments after practices and games, and free dinners furnished by Panther fans and parents for winning key games during the regular season. To boost the Panthers' spirit before the tournament there was a community pot-luck dinner put on by the Pep Club and fans. The Pep Club also contributed to the basketball season by picking secret sisters for each of the players on both A and B squads. The secret sisters put in much effort baking cakes, cookies, and pies which helped to lift the spirits of the teams. To gain experience and to fill out the rest of the Panther schedule, several new non-conference games, and one new tournament were added. They were with Three Forks, Clyde Park, and a Christmas Tournament in White Sulpher Springs. The Junior Varsity also started their year with a new coach, Dean Leary, who guided his in- experienced team through a busy season. It was a rough season for the young team, with tough compe- tition, but they came through the season quite suc- cessfully. The B-squad cheerleaders rewarded the team for their efforts by fixing a taco supper for them. 1. The main objective of drill team members for the 1976-77 year was to modernize the drills. Quick-moving, dancey drills were done to the tunes of The Hustle and Boogie on By. Pep Club The first community pot-luck supper was held on February 9 to help support the Panthers during district tournament. After the eats were gone, everyone traveled over to the gym where each class pre- sented a skit, the band played, and the cheerleaders led a pep rally. However, despite the lack of people and the early hour, a good time was had by all. 82 Senior Activities JEFF ABRA MS--Transfer from Stanford, MT 4; Who's Who 4; National Merit Scholarship Finalist 4; Band 4; Mixed Ensemble 4; District Music Festival 4; State Music Festival 4; Who's Who Music Students 4; Honor Roll 4. It was held in the all-purpose room. About 140 persons attended and en- joyed a meal of roast beef, baked potatoes, green beans, rolls, relish trays, and a dessert, which the junior mothers prepared and served. After dinner was served, the class history was read by Rusan Schulz, the class prophecy by Garth Elser, and the senior wills by Patti Claypool and Patti Flynn. Following the Junior-Senior Banquet was Baccalaureate beginning at 8:00 Graduation: May 23 Seniors Journey to Fairmont 94 On May 10, 1977, the Class of '77 ventured away for the traditional Sneak Day or Senior trip. The day started at 8:30 when the seniors were prodded into a bus, against their will, and forced to enjoy themselves during the long ride to Fairmont Hot Springs. On the way, a few seniors managed to forget about their problems long enough to shake dice and either win or lose their lives. When they finally reached their destination, they had the choice of golfing, swimming, or playing tennis. After thoroughly enjoying their day away from school (with twisted arms, of course) the bus loaded up and ventured to the Ramada Inn in Butte for a 5 p.m. dinner. After finally choking down their meals, the class toured the Butte shopping plaza. Some of the highlights there were Garth Elser getting an all day sucker from his sneak mother , Dan All hands riding a wild elephant, and Rocky’ Rule buying a T-shirt with his name on it so he won't forget. After those exciting activities came to an end, the group stormed the Plaza theatre, and there found the film Fun with Dick and Jane playing. The seniors then com- menced to amuse themselves by playing musical chairs and causing utter chaos, luckily before the movie started. The group seemed to enjoy the movie, but were sad to have to come home. Adults accompanying the seniors were mothers, Wanda Rule, Penny Christensen and Sheilia Cathey; bus driver, Harry Armstrong and advisor, Mrs. Raymond. Mrs. Raymond happily and proudly announced this favorable comment from the waitress at the Ramada Inn dining room, This was the best behaved group of high school students I have ever served. 4 •• $ -r
