Text from Pages 1 - 96 of the 1974 volume:

The Tree of Learning 1974 TRAILBLAZER Sheridan High School Sheridan, Montana The Class of ’74 Dedicates Its Yearbook to Supt. W. K. Pauli who played an essential part in the lives of the students of Sheridan High, offered them wisdom and hoped for their success. In this way, we wish to express our gratitude. Summer vacation ended on a sad note with the news of the deaths of Superintendent and Mrs. W. K. Pauli in an airplane crash on July 31, 1973. Mr. and Mrs. Pauli were returning home after a visit with their son and his family in Burlington, Vermont. The Delta Airlines flight was pro- ceeding to land at the Boston Airport, when one of the wings hit a sea wall, causing the plane to crash only a few miles from the terminal. The Paulis moved to Sheridan in 1966 when Mr. Pauli became Superin- tendent of Schools. He had formerly been superintendent in Lima and Clyde Park. Mr. Pauli was active in community affairs and was commander of the American Legion at the time of his death. Mrs. (Betty) Pauli was employed at the Montana Children’s Center. Prayer for Educators We who are privileged, Lord, to share with youth The quest for knowledge and the thirst for truth, Unite our hearts in deep humility To ask for wisdom and ability; Forever mindful that the teaching art Demands a patient, understanding heart, A heart that goes beyond the urge to teach And by example rather than with speech Sets forth a gentle wisdom, fair and kind, Which leaves its imprint on the growing mind, To be retained and one day understood By these who are the hope of brotherhood. In Memory of Supt. Pauli From “Meditation 17” by John Donne .. .No man is an island entire of itself; every man is a piece of a continent, a part of the main. If a clod be washed away by the sea, Europe is the less, as well as if a promontory were, as well as if a manor of thy friend's of thine own were. Any man's death diminishes me, be- cause I am involved in mankind, and there- fore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee. .. 2 3 Leadership and Service Student Council Drill Team Pass amari Librarians Trailblazer Faculty Student Assistants Pep Club “A good leader inspires other men with confidence in him; a great leader inspires them with confidence in themselves. ” Unknown L R: Billy Buyan, freshman class president; Mary Maloney, junior class student council representative; Pam Ward, junior class president; Mike Magnus, student body vice president; James Gilman, student body presi- dent; Bruce Peterson, senior class president; Kathleen Darby, student body secretary-treasurer; Becky Swager, sophomore student council representative; Sarah Swager, freshman student council representative; Dan Dedman, sophomore class president. FFA Activities The Ruby Valley Chapter of FFA began the 1973-74 year by sending three officers-Jeff Marsh, James Gilman, and Steve Burke and adviser, Dan Lantis to Washington D. C. Summer Conference Program in June. They attended a week of meet- ings and toured the capital city. The chapter had a booth at the Great Falls fair and received $200 for their entry. At the county fair in Twin Bridges, the chapter sold concessions jointly with the Twin Bridges Chapter. During the home foot- ball games, the FFA sponsored a concession stand. In Septem- ber all the officers and the adviser attended an officer train- ing course in Three Forks. The chapter invited chapters of the Southwest District to a livestock judging event at the McGregor Ranch, October 6. Sheridan won the first place team trophy and individual trophies went to Janet and Jeff Marsh, first and second. Dave Hoffman, Mike Stender, Dennis Descheemaeker, Joe Tezak, Dan Dedman, and Mr. Lantis attended the FFA National Convention, October 16-20 in Kansas City, Missouri. October 24-26 Janet Marsh, Jeff Marsh, James Gilman, and Scott Descheemaeker were accompanied by Bob Marsh to Billings where they took part in the NILE livestock judging event. Initiation of greenhands and chapter farmers was No- vember 5 in Twin Bridges, with the Ruby Valley,- Twin Bridges, and Dillon chapters jointly performing the ceremonies. Kelly Elser, Mike Stender, Pete Birrer, and Dennis Descheemaeker attended the Winter Fair in Bozeman January 26. February 16-28 the chapter took part in National FFA Week by putting up posters. The chapter also sponsored a slave auction, where the members worked for a day and gave their earnings to the chapter. Team members from the chap- ter attended the District Convention in Livingston, March 8 and 9. April 5-6 a chapter team took part in the State Convention in Billings where they were involved in various competitive ac- tivities. The year ended with a parent-member banquet where greenhand officers performed the installation of 1974-75 of- ficers. Later in the season some of the chapter participated in the District Convention held in Anaconda. Inviting their mothers, the girls held their annual chili supper and flea market auction. This year the FHA girls tried for the Honor Red Rose Chap- ter Degree. The girls went Christmas caroling and for the first time held a Christmas party for a number of pre-schoolers in December, which was happily successful. The Secret Grandmother project seemed to add a little different beginning to 1974. The Father-Daughter banquet created excitement for the second year in a row. The big event, held in March, was the style show. Also in March, the four top officers, with special seniors, attended the State Convention. At the end of the month election of new officers was held, follow- ing a taco supper. A spring clean-up day involved as much of the town as possible, after which a large pot- luck was held, which seemed to be enjoyed by both young and old. Throughout the year die FHA-FFA had many joint adventures. May baskets were made and distributed throughout the town to elderly people. The busy year closed with installation of new officers with Secret Grandmothers as guests. FHA er Cheri Turney, at left, was chosen District Vice President for 1974. E. , U. S. history, geography, and government. The School Board in Action This job is mostly volunteer, These men and women care Enough about their schools each year To face the problems there; They know that issues will arise, That conflicts will ensue, That lazy folks will criticize The job they try to do; Yet, with a better school in mind, (A goal that must be won) The school boards leaves mere talk behind And ACTS to get things done! 15 Mr. John Funk, senior class adviser; BS degree Western Montana College with majors in math and science; came to SH§ in the fall of 1972; teaches general math, algebra, intermediate math, and eighth grade math and science. Faculty I Would Teach To this my chosen field, dear Lord, I'd bring An understanding heart, an open mind, A spirit interested in everything, A discipline that's always wise and kind. I would be patient, give me, Lord, I pray This talent over skills I might possess That I shall stop and think before I say Some hurtful thing whose power I cannot guess. I would bring out the best in those I teach By loving care and genuine concern, That growth of mind and heart in them shall reach Beyond all textbook lessons they must learn. 16 Mr. Gary Anderson, freshman class adviser; BS degree Montana State University in mathematics; instructor in chemis- try, calculus, driver's education, geometry, algebra II; third year on SHS teaching staff. This Is My Responsibility To be informed that I may understand The problems faced by those who would secure Good schools in every section of our land Where true democracy shall long endure. To listen with an open mind and heart To him whose group is in minority, And by an honest sharing to impart A common bond of real authority. To work for that which would improve my school To vote for change, not merely criticize, Knowing that education as a tool Can build foundations where world peace shall rise. To be sincere in all I do and say, To use the talents given unto me And thereby grow a little every day, This, then, is my responsibility. Mrs. Leslie Jackson, FHA adviser; previously taught in the Sheridan school system for eight and one half years, re- turning here from Great Falls in 1968; teaches home economics and biology; BS degree from Montana State University. 17 grade school YOUNGSTERS ARE CHILDREN OF GOD . . . reaching for the values that will determine their qualities as adults. Baker In Memory of Mrs. Kitt Crossing the Bar Sunset and evening star, And one clear call for me! And may there be no moaning of the bar, When I put out to sea, But such a tide as moving seems asleep, Too full for sound and foam, When that which drew from out the boundless deep Turns again home. by Alfred, Lord Tennyson Twilight and evening bell, And after that the dark! And may there be no sadness of fare- well, When I embark; For though from out our bourne of Time and Place The flood may bear me far, I hope to see my pilot face to face When I haved crossed the bar. Mrs. Doris Kitt We, the Class of 1974, would like to dedicate these senior pages to Mrs. Doris Kitt who served as our class sponsor during our freshman year, and until her death in October of 1972. Her absence has been all too evident to all students, and especially to those of us who had the opportunity to know, love, and respect her. She Died in Beauty She died in beauty, —like a rose Blown from its parent stem; She died in beauty, —like a pearl Dropped from some diadem. She died in beauty, —like a lay Along a moonlit lake; She died in beauty, —like a song Of birds amid the brake. She died in beauty,—like the snow On flowers dissolved away; She died in beauty,—like a star Lost on the brow of day. She lives in glory, —like night s gems Set round the silver moon; She lives in glory, —like the sun Amid the blue of June. -Charles Doyne Sillery 59 Class of ’ 74 Motto: “It is what you do and say, that makes you what you are. ” Salutatorian Colors: Kelly Green and Chartreuse : Sweet Clover Tamara Jan Todd Tammy Class Secretary-Treasurer 3: Honor Society 1, 2, 3, 4; Girls' State Dele- gate 3; Scholastic Awards in Algebra 1, Math 3; D. Awards and Honors The Road Not Taken Two roads diverged in a yellow wood, And sorry I could not travel both And be one traveler, long I stood And looked down one as far as I could To where it bent in the undergrowth; Then took the other, as just as fair. And having perhaps the better claim, Because it was grassy and wanted wear; Though as for that the passing there Had worn them really about the same, And both that morning equally lay In leaves no step had trodden black. Oh, I kept the first for another day! Yet knowing how way leads on to way, I doubted if I should ever come back. I shall be telling this with a sigh Somewhere ages and ages hence: Two roads diverged in a wood, and I- I took the one less traveled by And that has made all the difference.
