Happy Divisional Champs State Class C Contenders In Appreciation We, the class of '72 would like to show our appreciation to one of our favorite people, Jack Simonsen. This is a man who calmly tore his hair out while we scuffed his polished floors, carved on his recovered desks, broke second-story windows, and squirted him with our water guns. To you, Jack, we leave this thought: We love you, oh, great and mighty coach of our intramural basketball team.

The Class of ’72 Dedicates this annual to SHS athletes past and present. In that past, and leading advocate of our sports program today, is Charles B. Murray, grade school principle. 'Chick was an outstanding athlete in his high school years at SHS — all-district basketball player and memorable track star in 1923. During his teaching career here, he acted as coach in 1932-34. In 1956, because of his foresight, Mr. Murray made it possible for the school to purchase the ground where the present-day football and track fields are located. He bought this land and held it until the school district could finance the transaction, charging no interest to the district. Mr. Murray put in many hours on this plot of land, planting grass and helping set up the present irrigation system. In more recent years SHS has had such prominent athletes as Dan Marsh and Les Duffner. Marsh, an all-around athlete in his high school career, is noted for his distinguished performance in scoring all but one of the winning points that placed Sheridan first in the State Class C Track Meet in 1963. His total of twenty-two represented more points than those compiled by any other class C school. Less Duffner, 69 graduate and exceptional performer in all athletic endeavors, is remembered most for his prowess on the basketball court, having the grand total of 2, 064 points for his four year career of varsity basketball. In this SHS Athletic Hall of Fame, we cannot forget our present heroes, the best basketball team ever to come from these hallowed halls, a team filled with-spirit and grit. The Sheridan Panther hoopsters of 1972-72 racked up twenty-seven wins, twenty-three of them straight, and could only be beaten in their final game by the best in the state. A team that could withstand biased referees, unsportsman-like opponents and anti-Panther crowds they were a great team loved by an enthusiastic SHS Pep Club.
