Dedication to Mrs. Ruth Bieler The highest of distinctions is service to others. —George VI of England We, the seniors of S. H.S., would like to dedicate this 1971 TRAILBLAZER to Mrs. Ruth Bieler. We would like to express our thanks and appreciation for her many years of service. Mrs Bieler grew up in Sheridan. She attended school in both Sheridan and Brandom. She is also a graduate of Western Montana College in Dillon. After graduating from college, she taught school for three years, two in Virginia City and one in Hardin. Mrs. Bieler was County Superintendent for the Madison Schools for four years, from 1923 to 1926. Serving as Trustee for Sheridan High School for twenty years, she has also been on the School Board for over thirty-six years. Mrs. Bieler succeeded Mr. Brim as school clerk from which she is retiring this year. It gives us pleasure to dedicate this issue of the TRAILBLAZER to Mrs. Bieler. What Is a Secretary She's the office favorite. . . with a key to the front door . . . She's business with a twinkle in her eye . . . She's a secretary. She likes: Considerate people . . . New typewriter ribbons . . . Sharp pencils . . . Fresh carbon paper . . . Tidy desks . . . Calculators that calculate correctly . . . Organization. . . and the school she works for . . . She doesn't like: People on the telephone who merely carry on a conversation . . . Loud salesmen . . . Smudgy carbon paper . . . Students who ask for Mr. Pauli when he's not in . . . and posing for the annual. She's Sheridan High School's Favorite Girl Friday . . . every day of the week. In Appreciation This small portion of our annual has been set aside to show appreciation to our parents. We would like to say Thank you for all the opportunities they have given us thus far in education, and in life. Mr. and Mrs. John Anderson, Sr. Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Burke Mr. Carl Caldwell Mr. and Mrs. George Carter Mr. and Mrs. Bob Chamberlin, Sr. Mr. and Mrs. Louie Day, Jr. Mr. and Mrs. Edward Doornbos Mr. and Mrs. Carl Flager Mrs. Hazel Flynn Mr. and Mrs. Harold Gilman Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Halse Mrs. Delcine Hansen Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Hardies Mr. and Mrs. Delbert Hartford Mr. and Mrs. Robert Hoffman Mr. and Mrs. John Hudson Mr. and Mrs. Milton Hunt Mr. and Mrs. James Kaatz Mr. and Mrs. George King Mrs. Frida McLaughlin Mr. and Mrs. Max Miller Mr. and Mrs. Jerald Munk Mr. O. J. Nottingham Mr. and Mrs. Matt Petersen Mr. and Mrs. Norman Schulz Mr. and Mrs. Jean Shipp Mr. and Mrs. Robert Shorten Mr. and Mrs. Jack Simonsen Mr. and Mrs. Richard Todd Mr. and Mrs. John Ward Thanks, Mr Keller As we graduate and depart, we leave behind, among other battered tilings, one slightly-used class advisor. Mr. Larry Keller has been a loyal advisor to the Class of '71 these past four years. We've had many 'ups' and many 'downs' in high school, but he stayed with us through it all. There were times when disagreements arose, but he knew that his job was advisor. He could get his point across without coming right out and telling us what to do. Mr. Keller helped us with our many ideas, and also gave us some ideas of his own. We've appreciated all you've helped us with. . . thanks Mr. Keller. Thank You, Mr. Douglas The members of the TRAILBLAZER annual staff would like to show our appreciation to our advisor, Mr. Don Douglas. He bravely took the job of advising the senior class as they diligently worked to put out the 1971 annual. Mr. Douglas attended our many meetings and advised us on the makings of a good annual. For the help you've given us this past year, Mr. Douglas, we would like to thank you. 3 Realities Aren t There r X i 4 -— I 1 The silver music of a once-existing laugh Still rings occasionally. And even the excited bubbling of a joyful voice resounds. Perhaps they are gone only in stability; Perhaps their essence will remain eternally. A memory as a scampering form hastens by, then is vanished But for a second he will remain As the leaves flutter from his motion. Then silence. An anxious silence, full of bewilderment That brings a softly penetrating sadness. A bright color of life dances near And yet, somehow, there is a light mist before it That is often almost negligible, yet often blinding. A warm flow of words passes by but does not enter. And gentle touches are no felt. Lite goes around in merry unconcerned circles. It dances and it dies. It reaches out and retreats. It laughs to conceal what Cannot be hidden. A dead leaf quietly floats to the ground And a gay step turns it to dust. From Echoes by Mathilde Koehler We know what we feel but we just can't express it. It's not like Keith is dead, it's just like he skipped out today . . . or he's at a track basketball game; like he's not really gone for good. Sail on silver girl Sail on by. Your time has come to shine. All your dreams are on their way. See how they shine. Oh if you need a friend I'm sailing right behind. Like a Bridge Over Troubled Water I will ease your mind. Like a Bridge Over Troubled Water I will ease your mind. . . I still see her, Her bright eyes full of life; I look at her empty desk-- I wonder if life is worth living. There were six of them— They carried her to her place of rest. I looked at the hazy sky through hurt wet eyes They put the top of the vault over her. The wind blew lightly. It seemed to carry her to God. She is in a very special place — She is with God. Gail, You are not alone. A part of me is with you; I loved you in a special way. Gail, I will cherish the memories my whole life. You will not be forgotten. Gail, life is so cruel. By Dan Hartford I NEED TO KNOW Tell me again I need to know Why dear people have to go I have a feeling deep inside That someday soon We'll all know why. But until that time It's only the hurt That's left behind To make us find The answer why. A very eventful happening concluded this year's basketball season. The mighty Senior Super Stars played the bandaided and linamented Over-The-Hill-Gang, in a game of rough basketball. After a side-splitting and hilarious first five minutes, the Senior Super Stars decided to let the pooped-out elder set make a basket. After numerous unsuccessful attempts, the heart-attack victim was removed from the court and the game resumed. Due to many such accidents, sexy cheerleaders, and GOOD refereeing, the Senior Super Stars lost by an UNKNOWN SCORE! can't bear to look ! Take it ALL off ! I can't wait until she gets to her tassels! FHA - FFA On September 23, 1970, the FHA girls presented their annual style show sponsored by Buttrey's Suburban. This event proved to be a great success and was enjoyed by ONE and all. On May 18, 1971, the FHA and FFA held a joint installation of officers, and the annual FHA style show. Among other awards given was a special FHA honor to Mr. Douglas in appreciation of his helpful assistance. She's not getting older, she's getting better! 23 Junior Prora On the night of April 24, the large crowd attending the 1971 Junior Prom found the gym decorated in the spring colors of orange and yellow, carrying out the theme of Come Catch The Sun , and danced to music by the Hartford Convention. Queen Victoria reigned, and Karen Brown was crowned Princess. Crown bearers were Sarah Steiner, and Kent Cathey. Both queen and princess received a half dozen long- stemmed roses. No, it's mine! He's dancing with HER again. “Come Catch the ” 24 Track “1971” Keith Edsall broke all school records in the hurdles. In this picture taken at the 1970 district track meet in Ennis, Keith is running first ahead of two strong competitors--Bob McClean of Willow Creek in second place and Twin Bridges' Keith Stone holding third place. Keith loved competition, and he never set his goal any lower than the best. The memory of his strong will to succeed was with our 1971 team as they advanced to state. His presence was felt by everyone. Divisional Champs The track team took first place at the district track meet, advanced to divisional competition, took top honors there, and was then qualified to compete at the state track meet. The team members at the right placed at district and went to divisional. Those placing at the divisional track meet, lower left, advanced to state. In the lower right photos, Joel Hunt is thinking hard about throwing the discus; and Dale Smail is taking his first flying lesson. J unior-Senior Banquet The junior-senior banquet was held in honor of the seniors in the all-purpose room, May 11. Christine Miller read the class will, Coleen Ward related the class history, and the future of the seniors was foretold by Vicki Schulz in the class prophesy. . . .and to the Class of '72, we will our dear classmate, Dan Birdsill. Earth Day Physics class speaks out On the twenty-second day of April, the students of SHS participated in the wide- spread celebration of Earth Day. In the morning, the high school and the eighth grade students crowded into the study hall, and they listened to Mr. Chisholm speak about the workings of the Forest Service around our area. Following him, seven physics students reported on several aspects of our environmental problem. The youth of today are speaking out on a subject that weighs heavy on everyone's mind. After lunch, the students worked hard cleaning up the streets and highways of our town. Earth Day was a success. Onward to better things. . Garbage??! ? 28 Women's Lib--Garbage Gals Mr. Chisholm Best-dressed cowboys, Jim and Mary Lou ilium aim Sitting at the Pondasuzy reading Playboy On the sixth of May, the morning sun revealed various types of western apparel entering the halls of SHS. The halls clammored with the stomping of boots and the jingle-jangle of spurs. Various activities concluded the day. Western Day 29 Are you callin' me a dude? It's lucky when you live out West! Seniors Sneak to Salt Lake The Class of '71 achieved another first in their long line of accom- plishments when they were given permission to take a sneak day; but they didn't stop there—they took FOUR days and went to Salt Lake City. They were accompanied by their advisor Mr. Keller and his wife, Rose; Mrs. Hudson; Mrs. Simonsen; Mr. and Mrs. Hunt; and the bus driver, Mr. Caldwell. The class worked together to raise the funds for the trip—taking in money from the play, Tom Jones , and the father-son basketball game that was truly the game of the year! The main past-time of the trip is told through these pictures as it was a weekend of sunbathing and sleeping, shopping and sleeping, and eating and sleeping. When asked how the trip was, one senior replied, It was nothing but wet and wild! One thing that all the seniors agreed upon was that it was the greatest weekend they could have had as a class. V. Erickson “To Keith” This picture, which was taken at the 1970 graduation, reveals many feelings that are too difficult to express. We as seniors have felt Keith's presence this past year, both as a classmate and as a friend. It was important to us to include Keith in our annual because he was so active in school; but it was even more important to include him in our graduation since we consider him a member of the Class of '71, and we always will. 32 ureate mencement Valedictorian, Pam Halse 33 The editors and staff members of the 1971 TRAILBLAZER would like to thank everyone for the participation and co-operation they have shown this past year—for without this, there would neither be a yearbook nor the treasured memories that we hope we have reflected in our TRAILBLAZER. Flashes From Yesterday This page is sponsored by the WESTERN STORE of Butte. Reflections Activities should have an educative value to be included in school affairs. This yearbook represents a great deal of individual and co-operative effort by the Senior Class. It is hoped the lessons learned in its production will be beneficial and its reading will bring back many happy memories of the school year 1970-1971. Sincerely yours, Superintendent Principal Congratulations to the class of 1971 and to the annual staff. After working with you one way or another for the past four years, I would like to express my appreciation for the fine co-operation you have always given me as principal, teacher, and coach. I earnestly hope that you will put to good use some of the knowledge which you have gathered while you were with us. Sincerely yours, 38 j |vY_'l 11 7 Don W.
