Maybe, just maybe, the smash- ing together of bodies and the taste of sweat in their mouths would take away the pain of their great loss. But they knew deep down inside that it wouldn't. The remembrance of that eager young face would be there every time they put on that uniform. He loved the game. When he put on the colors of his school, he was a different person. He changed from the care-free kid that he was, to a hard-nosed tobacco chewing ballplayer, who didn't know the meaning of the word QUIT! By Ron Pack It was lonely— standing silently, feeling the sweat bum our eyes. So we shouted, and our throats pained with voice, Our mouth guards dried and helmets shrunk, all to the rounds of mellowness, to the smell of flowers, to the casket's hour. A Tribute to Kay Tolson The student body of Twin Bridges was grieved to hear of the tragic death of Ray Tolson of Sheridan. To all of us, his fierce competitiveness and his friendly spirit will surely be missed. i feel, as I'm sure others feel, that the best tribute we can give to Ray is to reflect what he did and more important how he did it, in our school associations and in our lives, Twenty-two men, out together and each alone. And lonelier being together. We had no way out, but to make a team of twenty-two fight as twenty-three. And so we did and so we are, tackling, blocking, busting the line eight man ball, with the strength of nine. by Pliil Cox By Howe Lemm, Editor of the FALCON FLASH Twin Bridges High School October 15, 1969 The students of Sheridan High School were shocked and grieved when the news of the car wreck which took the life of a fellow classmate, Ray Tolson, was received Septem- ber 6. Ray, son of Mr. and Mrs. James Tolson, had resided in Sheridan since birth and attended both grade school and high school here. He was active in sports and other extra- curricular activities. Thomas Walter Jones, son of Mr. G Mrs. Fred Jones, died November 2 at his home. A sophomore at S. H. S. , he was bom at Coulee Dam, Washington, March 10, 1953, and moved to Sheridan in 1961. Tom was a member of the Ruby Valley Chapter of DeMolay. valedictorian WILFRED BARRY BARIL Student Council 4; Class President 4; Class Vice Presi- dent 3; Honor Society 1, 2, 3,4; Boys' State Delegate 3; High School Week 3,4; Chemistry 4; English 4; Economics 4; Biology 2; Social Studies 3; Perfect Attendance 1; Football 1, 2,3,4; Co-Captain 4; Basket- ball Manager 3; Track 4; S Club 3,4; Vice President 4; Bosch-Lomb Science Award 4: Band 1, 2, 3,4; Boys' Chorus 1, 2; Trailblazer Staff 4; Editor 4. Pep Club dues were used to help defray Cheerleader's expenses to the District Basketball Tournament. 25 Some new dimensions were added to the traditional Christmas activities this year. The girls in FHA decor- ated the front windows of the school to resemble stained glass windows which depicted the real meaning of Christmas. Even the traditional Christmas Program was modernized by having the groups perform in the round rather than on the stage. 26 Presented by Junior CCass Directed by l Vlr JCcCCer and l l lrs. The memories envoked in later years by this annual will be pleasing and nostalgic. As reflected by this work, school is not just a matter of grades and credits, but of activities and happenings that contribute to the education of the young people of Sheridan. The High School Band, under the direction of Mrs. Kitt, performed at various football and basketball games, the Christmas Program, the Amateur Show, the Spring Concert, Graduation, and other activities during the year. Three weeks later they sang their way to another superior rating at the State Music Festival in Missoula. The song they sang was Let There Be Music. Judy Grotzke, a sophomore, was selected to sing alto in the All-State Chorus at Missoula. The chorus is made up mostly of senior and junior girls from high schools throughout the state. Mrs. Kitt, after many years of teaching and listening to the young and liberal minds of her students, still hasn't mastered the technique for winning the amateur show. A graduate of the Univer- sity of Montana, she is admired by her students for her open-minded- ness and patience. The Senior Class ex- presses its appreciation to Mrs. Kitt, who has been a great help throughout their years of high school as a class sponsor. 35 The PASSAMARI is a bi-weekly publication put out by the Sheridan High School journalism class. The last forty have been partly devoted to us as a community. Today we pay tribute to our faithful friend who has transported the kids to and from school for these past forty years. Smokey began in 1930 driving his own twenty-year-old Pierce Arrow and con- tinued driving this for five years until he purchased a new car in 1935; this Chevrolet he used for fourteen years. During this period of time he drove for the Robbers Roost school district and also delivered children to Sheridan. Meanwhile, the high school students of Alder, Laurin, and Upper Ruby areas were obliged to find their own way to classes at the Sheridan School. Finally, through Mr. Axtell's efforts, a bus was purchased with Smokey the driver at the wheel . He established this route which has grown from approximately twenty students to the present seventy-two. He says he has always enjoyed his work, and that the kids are pretty much the same from year to year. He really hasn't any outstanding memories, but I'm sure there have been a lot of memorable days—blinding snow storms, thirty below zero weather, slick and muddy roads, with always the thought of the many children who were in his care; yet Smokey has never had an accident and for this he has received an award for which we can be very proud. The children who have traveled with him from their first day of school to their last have only fond and gentle memories, so here's to you, Smokey; may there be many more school day's and many more children who are trustfully put into your hands.
