“
THE SENIOR CLASS OF SHERIDAN HIGH SCHOOL PRESENTS THAT WONDERFUL YEAR” THE 1962 TRAILBLAZER We, the Senior Class of Nineteen-hundred and sixty-two, wish to express our deepest gratitude and appreciation to our beloved adviser, Doris E. Kitt. She has guided us through our four difficult years of high school. Without her help and inspiration our years would not have been as rewarding, happy, or memorable as they have been. Mrs. Kitt will always be in our heart and in our prayers. 2 SUPERINTENDENT’S MESSAGE Sincere congratulations to the Class of 1962. You have excelled in many areas of endeavor and have shown real academic promise. You have been gifted with above average ability and I feel certain you will use these gifts to bring honor to yourselves, your parents, and the school. I am confident this class will be well remembered for what they accomplished in school, but more important they will be recognized for what they will do individually in later life. Superintendent, A. Dudden not only taught his regular classes, but also gave helpful counseling to the students. He gave interest tests to the seniors to help them choose their occupations and helped the underclassmen to begin thinking about their future careers. As an experiment, the guidance department was a success, but it was only possible because of Mr. Dudden. To these four hard-working, dedicated people the students of the Sheridan schools can say only one suitable word--Thanks. COOKS AND JANITORS Through the efforts of Mr. Frank Moore, Mrs. Florence Baker, and Mr. Leland Baker, Sheridan had well-fed students and a school to be proud of. They worked continually to prepare delicious foods and to keep the school in clean, repaired condition. 5 STUDENT COUNCIL FRONT ROW: Barry Carter, Paul Marsh, Bonnie Weber, Bill Sheehan, Kay Mortensen, Helen Ryan. The 1962 Panthers went all the way this year for the first time in the history of the Sheridan High School. They won the District 15 Championship both in conference play and the tournament in Butte, Montana, in which they defeated the Whitehall Trojans. The Western Montana Divisional Champion- ship also went to the Panthers when they topped the Corvallis Blue Devils at the tournament in White- hall, Montana. It was not until the mighty Panthers ran into Corvallis again in the contest for the state championship that they met defeat. Coach Ed Bergquist, who coached the Panthers throughout their tough but successful season, was named Coach of the Year by a panel of sportswriters and impartial coaches. The Panthers ended the 1962 basketball season with a very impressive 26-1 win-loss record. They were and are a team to be proud of. First place was taken by the Panthers in every track meet in which they were entered with the exception of the Billings Jaycee Invitational where they were in competition with Class A and Class B schools. In that meet they came in second to Class A Laurel. For the second year in a row, the Panthers won the District 15 Championship and the Western Divisional Championship. This makes a total of four consecutive district crowns and four consecutive divisional championships in three sports. The State Championship won this year is the second taken by Sheridan High. The first was in 1939 when Sheridan was considered Class B. This is a very impressive record and one of which to be proud. Eugene Bock, state high jump champion, Byron Sagunsky, state sprinter, Dan Marsh, pole vaulter and hurdler, and Bob Wright, weight man, paced the Panther track team to victory along with Ray Shaw, who was anchor man on the relay team. Sheridan High School and the town of Sheridan are very proud of the 1962 track team for their performances on and off the track field. The boys are a credit to their school, town, county, and state. Congratulations, Panthers! 35 FROM THE SIDELINES 36 Who's gonna win? Get 'em, Gang ! ! PEP CLUB OFFICERS Left to Right: Coach Ed Bergquist, Judy Buck, President; Tricia Weston, Vice-President; Kay Mortensen, Secretary; Mr. Dan King. The pep club followed the Panthers all over western Montana to watch and cheer for the victors from Sheridan High School. Winning would have been much more difficult if there had not been a cheering section on Sheridan's side of the field or floor. Being on the sidelines was nearly as exciting as playing in the game at times, but the Sheridan boosters showed as much good sportsmanship as did the team members. They conducted themselves as ladies and gentlemen and should certainly be complimented. We hope that in years to come, Sheridan High will continue to have a pep club to be proud of. Baccalaureate speakers Mr. A. L. Libra Baccalaureate was held for the Class of 1962 in the Sheridan High School Gymnasium on May 20, 1962. Commencement exercises took place on May 22, 1962. Music for both occasions was furnished by the high school choral groups under the direction of Mrs. Doris Kitt, the Senior Class Advisor. Mr. Nathan Packer of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints said the Angel Trio Invocation, Mr. Arlo Weston, also Lift Thine Eyes of that church, said the Benediction, and Mr. Lee Palmer of Salt Lake City, Utah, gave the sermon at Baccalaureate. For Commencement, Reverend Ben Gum of the Methodist Church gave the Invocation, Mr. A. I. Libra, a prominent attorney from Helena, Montana, was the main speaker, Mr. A. J. Thomas, Superintendent, presented the honors and awards, and Mr. Don Douglas and Mr. Bert Ellinghouse, Chairman of the Board of Education, awarded the diplomas. Mr. Charles Murray then presented the eighth grade diplomas and Reverend Gum followed with the Benediction. For many of the Seniors, graduation was a sad moment in which all the old friends were left behind. To others it was only the beginning of a brand new life. Mr. Palmer did an excellent job of inspiring the graduates at Baccalaureate when he presented to them a House of Attributes in which they would do well to build their lives. Mr. Libra advised the outgoing class to abide by the laws and rules of the established society if success is to be their goal. In the future the Class of 1962 will go the many separate ways, but in the halls of Sheridan High and in the hearts of its students, the memory of these twenty-six boys and girls, now men and women, will live forever.
