Text from Pages 1 - 48 of the 1958 volume:

TRAILBLAZER the class of 1958 of Sheridan High School, Sheridan, Montana In memory of our beloved classmate and dear friend, Denny Glick, whom we lost two years ago. Nothing can make up for his absence but we will always carry memories of Denny in our many paths of life. He will be remem- bered as the most outstanding member of our class. Denny was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Glick. We, the Senior Class of 1958, dedi- cate this annual to Mrs. Doris Kitt, our wonderful class advisor, in apprecia- tion of the thoughtfulness and guid- ance that has been shown us by her. Without her help, the goal of graduation would never have been achieved. We thank her now and we will thank her many times in the future. Superintendent’s Message Congratulations to the annual staff on a job well done. With a small class it was a big job, and your accomplishment is evidence of ability and integrity. The graduates of the past have made Sheridan High School something of which the entire com- munity can be proud. I am sure the class of 1958 will contribute to that reputation. --Supt. A.J. Award Night Band bar for Bud Baril Ed Guinnane receiving cross-country trophy Senior Class History The members of the Senior Class of 1958 of Sheridan High School, all great geniuses, have invented a time-top which will actually take them backward or forward into time. We now set our time regulator for approximately twelve years in the past and return to the school year of 1946-47. We see twenty-some bright-eyed youngsters making their first timid steps into the halls of the Sheridan Public School. Under the guidance of Mrs. Helen Tolson, the little ones learned their ABC's and 1 + l's and advanced to the high position of second grade. The time-top skims rapidly over the next few years and takes us to the Sheridan High School Gym in which we see 15 boys and girls about to graduate from the eighth grade. Of these 15, only 7 faces are familiar. Yes, Denny Click, Stan Shafer, Ken Simonsen, Mary Kaatz, Harvey Salmonsen, Dawson Williams, and Jackie Herzog are still sticking together. The time-top gives a little spurt and we see 14 green little Freshmen about to make their mark--or marks--in the halls of SHS. Though we lost a few of our grade school colleagues, we gained a few new ones. Jimmy and Harvey Salmonsen, and Tamara Russell were taken off to unknown parts of the world, but Bill Long, Karen Schneider, Dixie Carter, and Leona Thompson were imported from other regions. The big event of that year was being properly initiated into high school. Those Sophomores! Of all the ridiculous garbs and get-ups they made our poor class members come to school in. And that party that night! They subjected us poor Freshmen to in- human treatment. Ahhhh, but revenge is soo sweet—in front of the whole student body, some of their deepest and darkest secrets were revealed. Jackie Herzog, Bill Long, Stan Shafer, Denny Glick, and Ed Guinnane were chosen as our Freshman Class Officers, and Mary Kaatz and Stan Shafer were chosen as candidates for carnival king and queen. Mrs. Doris Kitt was appointed as our class sponsor. The time-top seems to have a little rough going for our next take-off. Oh ho, no wonder--we see 14 Sophomores planning how to take their spite out on the incoming Freshmen. Ahh, but it's great to be an elder. But wait--do we see some red faces! Using our own little trick, these Freshmen dug up some of our most embarrassing moments and exposed them to EVERYONE. The class has diminished somewhat with the loss of George Weidner, Mary Kaatz, Bill Long, Pat Struthers, and Ruth Vaughn, but things perk up a bit when we see 4 strangers entering our midst in the forms of Dona Munns, David Oliver- son, and Lee and Ronnie Frost. Denny Glick, Stan Shafer, and Ed Guinnane were chosen to run the business affairs of this all- important organization and Stan Shafer and Jackie Herzog were chosen to represent our class in the Carnival King and Queen contest. Our heads swell a big as we move into the year 1956-57 when at long last we become upperclassmen - - Juniors. Our class members became an even dozen with the loss of Lee and Ronnie Frost, Denny Glick, Leona Thompson, and the gaining of Clarke Raymond and Harvey Salmonsen. This big year brought about our very own Junior Prom. We decorated the gym to the theme of Red Sails in the Sunset. The grand march was led by our class president, Stan Shafer and the Senior queen, Beryl Berryman. Gary Garret was next in line as Senior Class president to escort the Junior princess, Jackie Herzog, Ed Guinnane, Dixie Carter, David Oliverson, and Har- vey Salmonsen were the rest of the class officers and Dona Munns and Ed Guinnane participated in the Carnival contest. Another highlight of the year was the Junior-Senior banquet prepared and served by our wonderful mothers. The time-top slowly turns into its last cycle as we come upon the year of 1957-58, the last year of high school for our subject at hand. Tension runs high as we wait for those final moments when we will be on our own, but in the meantime there are such things as the Junior Prom, given in our honor, to make the time pass quickly--almost too much so. The theme of the prom was Sail Along Silvery Moon, and the grand march this year was led by Jackie Herzog, Senior Queen, and Ed Brandon, Junior President. Stan Shafer crowned Phyllis Baril, Junior Princess. The graduating class had diminished to a grant total of seven members with the loss of Clarke Ray- mond, Harvey Salmonsen, David Oliverson, and Dixie Carter, but LcRoy Johnson and Kenneth Lueck entered to boost our number to nine. Class officers for the year are Stan Shafer, LeRoy Johnson, Jackie Herzog, Harvey Salmonsen, and Ed Guinnane. What's this—something very mysterious is brewing --oh, it's plans for the Senior sneak trip which (supposedly) no one is to know anything about. Next we see our last Junior- Senior banquet. Might as well make the most of the food while we're here. Baccalaureate services were held May 25 and showed us nine young men and young women about to hear an address from Reverend John Hay. The top sees commencement exercises being held in that same gym from which several of the members graduated from the eighth grade. Of that eighth grade graduating class we see Dawson Williams, Ed Guinnane, Stan Shafer, Ken Simonsen, and Jackie Herzog. After a message from Dr. Glover our time-top leaves the day of May 28, 1958, and returns to the present day for repairs until it is once again ready to make another journey backward or forward into time. Class Will We, the Senior Class of 1958, of Sheridan High School, State of Montana, County of Madison, City of Sheridan, on the corner of Madison and Poplar Streets, being of sound minds and able bodies, submit this last will and testament, hereby revok- ing all previous wills and testaments or promises made by the class or members thereof: To Sheridan High we leave the marks on the floors and desks, torn and tattered books, and frazzled teachers. To the Class of '62 we leave Mrs. Kitt and hope that they will add 12 more grey hairs to her collection. To the Class of '61 we leave our gigantic number of mem- bers and hope that per person they go as far as we have. To the Class of '60 we leave our scholastic ability and aptitude for getting along with the teachers. To the Class of '59 we leave our many essays and ninth periods, and may they use them extensively. As individuals we bequeath the following items to our friends, the Class of 1959: I, Stan Shafer, leave my witty sayings to Donna Moore and my singing voice to Dorothy Simonsen. I, Edwin Guinnane, leave Sharon Herzog in Ed Brandon's care--not arms, CARE, and my motorcycle riding ability to Jerry Braach. I, Kenneth Lueck, leave my grades to Lynn Ellinghouse and Dorene Burlingame, and--I leave Sheridan High School. I, Dona Munns, leave my straight hair to Sherry Moran and my ability to keep my mouth shut to Kay Wessel. I, Karen Schneider, leave my term paper to Gary Winslow and my short hair to Joanne Braach. I, Kenneth Simonsen, leave my mathematical ability to Lynda Powell. I, Dawson Williams, leave my red crew-cut to Larry Trueman. I, LeRoy Johnson, leave my ability to get along with the teachers to Paul Sagunsky and Kenneth Doyle. I, Jackie Herzog, leave my temper to anyone who is fool enough to take it, and 3 inches to Phyllis Baril. Signed and sealed this, the 8th day of May, in the year of our Lord one thousand nine hundred and fifty-eight.
